Singled Out: Hierosonic's The Media Taught You That
Hierosonic kick off a their tour with Seven Day Sonnet on October 7th and to celebrate we asked frontman Ben Stewart to tell us about their new single "The Media Taught You That" from their latest album 'Consciousness, Fame, God, Money, Power' .

Hierosonic's single 'The Media Taught You That' is a modern exploitation of a timeless cultural symbol. The media reflects exactly what mass psychology craves. Wars as entertainment, lies as collective denial, truth only when it suits our self image and everything under the sun that dies will make the front page. In no way shape or form does the song portray the media as a negative or positive force in our culture. Only as the television's representation of the condition of our mind.

Even the term "media" is a symbol of the medium between reality and our belief systems. Both of which are polar opposites. Hierosonic's inspiration for 'the Media Taught You That' comes from their curiosity about what constitutes our truth as a global society.

The chorus drives home the mantra "We are the free, the land of hopes and dreams", countered by telling us that the world is going to end. Yet again, we hear in the chorus "The world is full of lies, so don't open your eyes", because as always the masses crave excitement, death, disease, and trials to overcome. Therefore the last line of the song screams, "The world is going to end tonight", for the media taught you that.

Cheap Trick Lobbying Against Possible Stage Collapses
(hennemusic) Cheap Trick aren't letting their close call in Ottawa this summer go away without a fight. Trick's July 17 set at the Ottawa Bluesfest was interrupted by a sudden storm that caused the stage to collapse around them as the band narrowly escaped without injury.

On Monday, guitarist Rick Neilsen and band manger Dave Frey were on Capitol Hill, where the Chicago Tribune reports the two intended to urge congressmen to regulate temporary stages to prevent such an incident from happening again. Besides their own near-miss, they'll have plenty to talk about with legislators.

Cheap Trick's near-fatal incident was one of four last summer in which temporary stages were blown down amid foul weather during or just before musical performances, some with tragic consequences. In the following weeks, stages collapsed in Tulsa, destroying $800,000 worth of gear owned by the Flaming Lips but causing no injures; the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis, resulting in seven deaths and dozens of injuries; and the Pukkelpop Music Festival in Belgium, where five people were killed and 140 injured. more on this story

Remembering The Cars' Benjamin Orr
(Gibson) On this day in 2000, The Cars' singer and bass player Benjamin Orr died of cancer at home in Atlanta at the age of 53. Gibson takes a look back: Although Ric Ocasek will forever be the most identifiable figure in The Cars (and, if you've ever seen him, how could he not be?), some of the band's biggest hits were sung by member Benjamin Orr. The group's bassist sang lead on tunes such as "Just What I Needed," "Let's Go" and their highest-charting single, "Drive." While there have been rumors of a Cars reunion, sadly, Orr won't be able to take part. He passed away on this day in 2000.

Long before he helped found The Cars in 1976, Orr was born Benjamin Orzechowski in Lakewood, Ohio in 1947. As a young musician growing up in the Cleveland suburbs, he took to all sorts of instruments, including guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. Becoming well-known as "Benny 11-Letters," Orr dropped out of high school to sing lead and play guitar in a local band named The Grasshoppers. The group became the house band on the syndicated, Cleveland-based series Upbeat, and even released a couple of singles, one written by Orr.

However, the group disbanded in 1967 when two of the members were drafted for the Vietnam War. Orr was drafted soon after, although he only spent about a year and a half in the army because of a deferment. Once out of the service, Orr moved to Columbus in 1970, where he met Ric Ocasek at a party. The two would become friends and musical partners for the next two decades. more on this story

Tupac Sex Tape

The tape, shot in 1991, begins with a bunch of groupies in a living room during a house party. Tupac walks into the room with his pants down to his ankles, his shirt off ... sporting several chains.

Tupac -- whose head is shaved -- pulls one of the women toward him, and she begins performing oral sex. As she does her thing, an unreleased song of Tupac's is playing in the background, as Tupac is singing along and dancing, wiggling his hips.

I am honoured to share the stage with the incredible performers in this line up and am certain that nothing would make my brother smile bigger or brighter than this tribute concert. In speaking with my mother yesterday, I asked her where she thinks Michael would rather have us be, in this courtroom filled with negativity and lies or on a stage celebrating his music, his legacy and his life and she said without a second of thought, 'Celebrating his Life with family and fans. I am looking forward to putting on a great show and making my brother proud.'" more on this story

Flaming Lips To Sell Song Encased In Human Skull
(Gibson) Flaming Lips plan to commemorate Halloween this year by releasing a 24-hour-long song encased in human skulls. As reported by O Music Awards, frontman Wayne Coyne insists the project is neither "bizarre" nor "illegal."

"In parts of the world and even on eBay you can actually buy real human skulls," he points out. "There's a place in town that's called 'Skulls Unlimited' that's been here for almost as long as The Flaming Lips have been here, and it sells human skulls." "Skulls Unlimited" is located in Oklahoma, where Coyne makes his home.

If all goes according to plan, Coyne will insert hard-drives containing the massive recording into five human heads, each of which will be chrome-plated and elegantly packaged. As regards the theme of the composition, which has yet to be recorded, Coyne says it's "another element of this Flaming Lips connection with death and beauty and all that." more on this story

A Generation Without Lead Singers?
(Gibson) The Who's Roger Daltrey says contemporary music is suffering from a lack of great lead singers, and TV shows such as American Idol are partly to blame. Speaking to the Associated Press, the veteran frontman said, "A lot of the new people they choose on shows like American Idol and things like that — I don't ever hear lead singers. They always seem to pick people that are great singers, fabulous singers, but they've never got the voice that makes a great lead singer."

Daltrey went on to cite several examples of lead vocalists he considers top-tier. "You hear ten seconds of Rod Stewart, you know it's Rod Stewart," he said. "Ten-seconds of Mick Jagger, that's Mick Jagger. Ten-seconds of Eddie Vedder, you know that's Eddie."

As regards the younger crowd, he did name one exception to what he considers the dearth of great vocalists. "I love Adele," he said, referring to the British soul singer whose sophomore disc, 21, is the top-selling album in both the U.S. and the U.K. this year. "That's a lead singer, [she's] the real deal." more on this story

13 Sums Up Megadeth
(Banana 101.5) Megadeth bassist David Ellefson recently gave a track by track breakdown of their new album 'TH1RT3EN', and says that the title track sums up the entire arc of the band.

Megadeth has had a 28-year long career. It would seem nearly impossible to encapsulate that entire experience into one song, but bassist David Ellefson says the album's closing track does just that. The recently returned bassist told Music Radar of the song '13′:

"It really epitomizes the story of Megadeth. Before starting the record, Johnny K had read Dave's autobiography, and I think that helped him understand Dave's psyche, as well as what Megadeth is all about. As the song was being developed musically, the words started to spill out onto the page, largely from Johnny's conversations with Dave. If you ever wanted to hear a song that summed up the arc of Megadeth as a band, '13′ is it." More from him here

Singled Out: Kyng's Falling Down
Today Tony Castaneda from Kyng tells us about "Falling Down" from their brand new album "Trampled Sun," which was released last week. Here is the story:

"Falling Down" was the first song that we ever wrote. While Pepe and I were on the road together prior to the start of KYNG, we started conceptualizing what we wanted to capture as a band. I was listening to a lot Testament at the time and it gave me the idea for the opening riff of the song. Eddie and I had played in a band prior to Pepe and I. From that band, I took a stock riff I had written from a song. It turned out to be the short bridge right before the blast beat.

Immediately I came up with the chorus riff that solidified the feel of "Falling Down" and how it was going to come across musically. There was so much power behind that riff that I knew Eddie would capture something special vocally. The chorus lyrics "You'll never see me falling down" is a mantra that explains the song. The song is about persistence and barreling your way through those who are expecting you to fail...from the start.

My personal favorite part of the song is the breakdown. When I came to Eddie with the bass line, he wrote the guitar solo on the fly and I said, "That's it!" It felt so right and fit like a glove. One of the things love about Eddie is how organic he layers what the bass is doing. On top of that, the drumming on the song is what makes the difference between labeling us a rock band vs. a metal band. I feel without the power that Pepe emits from his drumming, KYNG would not have the strength that it has. "Falling Down" set the pace for our writing style and defined the musical direction of the band, which we later coined as "California Heavy."

Aerosmith - The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Boston Bad Boys By Richard Bienstock

For over 40 years, Aerosmith delivered flat-out, four-on-the-floor blues-based rock unlike any band before. Referred to as "The Bad Boys from Boston," they combined memorable songwriting with a showmanship unlike any band on the planet.
Forty-plus years later, the band holds a spot in the rarified air of American rock royalty as one of the greatest—and most mercurial—rock 'n' roll bands of all-time.
This massive, illustrated celebration is the first of its kind to provide a front-row seat to the Boston Bad Boys' entire career: scrapping their way cross-country in the 1970s, scrapping their way back to the top of the heap in the late 1980s, and scrapping with each other the entire way. Music journalist Richard Bienstock's lively history of the band's rise, fall, and rebirth is illustrated with nearly 400 photographs and collectibles, including gig posters, backstage passes, ticket stubs, 7-inch picture sleeves, and vintage T-shirts.
Aerosmith also includes an extensive discography and assessments of each of the band's studio albums, written by such distinguished rock scribes as Daniel Bukszpan, Neil Daniels, Chuck Eddy, Bill Holdship, Greg Kot, Martin Popoff, Bud Scoppa, Phil Sutcliffe, and Jaan Uhelszki. The result is a visually stunning portrait of the band many have called America's best.

About the Author: Richard Bienstock is a senior editor with Guitar World magazine and the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine. He is also a musician and journalist whose writings have appeared in numerous U.S. and international publications, including The Village Voice and Classic Rock magazine. He currently lives in New York City.
