Joey Belladonna Was Anthrax's Second Choice?
(hennemusic) In a recent interview, Joey Belladonna was surprisingly frank, and realistic, about his current place in Anthrax and the revolving door of vocalists.

"I wasn't their first choice to come back into this thing," said Joey. "Put it this way: If John said he wanted to do it, they probably would have taken him. If they would have done the Big 4 with him and it would be successful? Who knows? Would they finish the record? Who knows? If they didn't have a fight with a guy they first had to finish the record (Nelson) and would have put it out, they would have done that. To me, you got what you got."

Acknowledging the often complicated relationship with the rest of the band, Joey said, "We are a unique package of musicians and there's no band out there that has a lineup that, if you're trying to recreate it, you're not going to have much luck. For Anthrax, it's hard for us to pull it off. This thing is a little more intricate." more on this story

The Day Iron Maiden Found Their Voice
(Gibson) On this day in 1981, Bruce Dickinson joined Iron Maiden, (Dickinson had been the vocalist with Samson). Gibson takes a look back: Steve Harris had almost sorted it out. Six years after he formed Iron Maiden, whose name was inspired by a film adaptation of The Man in the Iron Mask, Harris was still looking for that final piece to the puzzle. Having gone through three singers, twelve guitarists (of which, two remained), four drummers (of which, one remained) and a keyboard player, the bassist-songwriter-bandleader had almost dialed up the perfect combination. But he still needed a frontman.

When Iron Maiden signed to a major label in December 1979, it seemed like they were just about there. The line-up of Harris, guitarist Dave Murray, second guitarist Dennis Stratton, drummer Clive Burr and singer Paul Di'Anno was a pretty fearsome group. Stratton and Murray provided a complementing, give-and-take twin-guitar attack. Burr was a more-than-solid drummer. Harris was quickly developing into the best bassist in heavy metal. And Di'Anno…well, Di'Anno was something else.

Paul Di'Anno was not your prototypical singer. His voice was raspy and harsh, though he could fire off a top-shelf scream when necessary. But Rob Halford he was not. Di'Anno, though, brought a toughness to a band that was built for menace. In songs like "Phantom of the Opera" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue," you get the feeling you're hearing the story from the killer himself. The rest of the tale here

Napalm Death Re-ink With Century Media for New Album Release
Napalm Death finished recording their upcoming 14th studio album earlier this year at Parlour Studio in Kettering, UK with long-time producer Russ Russell and have just announced that they have re-inked a world wide deal with Century Media Records.

Napalm Death vocalist Mark 'Barney' Greenway says of the deal, "We're very happy to be re-signing to Century Media. In fact, I think it's the first time we've actually re-signed on a longer term deal with anybody since the days when we didn't strictly know that we could be digging ourselves a big hole with labels...It's important for NAPALM to stay with an independent, and Century proved to us with their overall enthusiasm and attention that this is where we needed to be. There's a perfect balance of getting the band out there in people's faces whilst still understanding the point that not everything is acceptable or 'ethical' promotion. It's more like working with friends who actually care, and who could argue with that?"

Jens Prüter (Head of A&R, Century Media Records) comments, "NAPALM DEATH is not only one of the most important and influential extreme metal bands, they are also a band that always raises their voice against social ills-- and even against record companies (remember 'Enemy Of Music Business'). Therefore I'm even more glad about NAPALM DEATH re-signing to Century Media for more great albums of intelligent and meaningful noise. And have you ever seen a weak NAPALM DEATH show? I haven't, and I have seen them MANY times and will never get tired to see them again and again. Thanks to Mitch, Danny, Shane and Barney for their resilience and resistance-- and a special thanks to Marc from MAD for fighting on their side." more on this story

Simon Cowell Mocks American Idol Scotty McCreery
(Taste of Country) 'X Factor' creator and judge Simon Cowell has made it clear he wants to top 'American Idol,' and it looks like he's willing to play dirty to get there.
When asked if he could do an American accent outside of late night host Jimmy Kimmel's studios, the former 'Idol' judge turned on his faux-southern charm and offered, "Y'all gonna love this," before coming back with: "I love you this big."

TMZ caught the incident on video, and it's clear by his cocky smirk and the broader context of the unspoken competition of the two singing reality shows that Cowell was not trying to flatter Scotty McCreery. Find the offending comment in the video here

Pepsi Recycles Michael Jackson, Britney, and Mariah Carey
(PopCrush) We all know how important it is to recycle, and that's exactly what Pepsi has done with their latest commercial, which shows footage from their old television spot starring Britney Spears and other pop stars as a new song — 'Tonight is the Night' by Outasight — plays on top of them all.

Clips from earlier commercials featuring Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, and Mariah Carey are also shown, but it's Spears at her limber, not-so-innocent best who commands the most attention via this revisiting of her red, white and blue group dance routine.

As for Outasight, well, shocker: That's not his real name. It's Richard Andrews, and he's a rapper and singer from Yonkers who's been making a good name for himself through a series of mixtapes and the 2010 'Further' EP. See the video here

Air Force Investigating 16 and Pregnant Star
(TMZ) Life is about to get very real for reality star Josh Rendon ... he could be kicked out of the Air Force.

TMZ has learned the "16 and Pregnant" star is currently under investigation by the military for his conduct leading up to his arrest earlier this week on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and drug possession.

A rep for Little Rock Air Force Base, where the incident took place, tells TMZ ... Rendon could be court-martialed, or face other administrative action. In other words, he could be discharged.

If he gets kicked out of the military, Rendon and his wife, Ebony Jackson, will lose their home -- because they live on the base.

On Tuesday, police raided Rendon and Ebony's pad, after someone complained about living conditions in the house. Police found the place covered in feces.

The couple's 2-year-old daughter was taken away by the Department of Human Services.

TMZ spoke to Rendon. He had no comment. more on this story

Exodus Almost Joined The Big Four
(RockAAA) Megadeth mainman Dave Mustaine almost had to bail on last week's Big Four gig at Yankee Stadium due to neck problems he attributes to "years of headbanging."

Dave's specific health issue, stenosis, is a neck and spine condition that is actually an abnormal narrowing of the blood vessel or organ. The show went on and Mustaine, risking paralysis if things went wrong, played through the pain to get through the band's set.

Waiting in the wings to jump in if Megadeth's plug had been pulled were San Francisco metallers Exodus. This news was revealed during an interview at the stadium with Slayer guitarist Kerry King, who commented on the close call, and the effort Exodus made to make it happen, if it was going to happen. more on this story

Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers Score Best Covers of the 90s
(Gibson) With the breakthrough of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden in the 1990s, grunge and alternative rock arrived at the musical mainstream in a way that '80s underground acts such as Dinosaur Jr. had never enjoyed. Along with the new, raw musical approach came album art that clearly contrasted the covers of '80s hair metal gems. Love or hate grunge, it's impossible to refute the influence of these benchmark album covers.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik: The sketched black, white and red cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik is the work of indie filmmaker Gus Van Sant. The artwork of the LP showcases the four band members' mugs, their tongues stretching to the middle of the frame, centered around a red rose. The eye-catching image became iconic, as the album spawned mass hits for the Peppers, from the plaintive "Under the Bridge" to the rockin' "Give It Away."

1. Nirvana, Nevermind: Nirvana's Nevermind album art is the universal symbol for grunge and a generation of sounds that transformed the face of rock music. The now-iconic baby gracing the cover, swimming in an aqua paradise, was a sharp contrast to the '80s metal albums of the day, which largely glorified band members. With the 20th anniversary of Nevermind on September 24, it's the perfect time to recognize the music – and the album art – behind this grunge-rock masterpiece. more on this story

Anberlin Singled Out Week: We Owe This To Ourselves
Anberlin kick off a coheadlining tour with Switchfoot this week and to celebrate we asked frontman Stephen Christian to tell us about some of the songs from their latest album "Dark Is A Way Light Is A Place". Today he tells us about "We Owe This To Ourselves":

This song was written about one of my heroes, Martin Luther King Jr. This song was originally supposed to be called 'King' but universal thought different. It should have been called 'King' and still is on our set lists at night.

I was listening to the radio on a drive home from a show and heard this NPR report about the end of MLK's life. He felt lonely and isolated and basically predicted his own death at one of his speeches.

I was so inspired, and on that drive home jotted down the line 'if every man became a king, then we could do more than just dream'. I feel that our generation can not let up on the fight to end racism. We must continue along the path of the trail that has been etched out for us by such great men.

*if you turn up 'You Belong Here' in the beginning, you can hear talking. We actually tell the world the meaning of life, so turn it up and you will have it all figured out.

LIVE FROM DARYL'S HOUSE MAKES BROADCAST TV DEBUT THIS SATURDAY NIGHT:

New York, Sept. 21, 2011—Born on the Internet four years ago as a “light bulb moment” for Daryl Hall, Live from Daryl's House, the Webby and MTV O Music award-winning webcast, will make its broadcast premiere nationally with two back-to-back half-hour episodes featuring Train and Fitz & the Tantrums, on Saturday, Sept. 24. The show will be syndicated nationally by Good Cop Bad Cop Productions in association with Scott Sternberg Productions and distributor Trifecta Entertainment & Media. Executive producers for the show include Hall and Scott Sternberg along with Daryl Hall manager Jonathan Wolfson.
Live from Daryl's House marks the first full-length music web show to successfully cross over into the television syndication marketplace. LFDH has been a hit monthly live-performance web series since 2007, featuring Daryl Hall jamming (and cooking and drinking) with friends, musicians and guest artists. The 30-minute broadcast version is a performance reality series which takes place in the intimate setting in Daryl Hall's home.
“This is a dream come true for me,” said Daryl. “When I first had the idea for this series four years ago, I was hoping to reach a wide audience, and this is just another step in that plan. We're all raring to go.”
“It's been a delight and a reward for me to work with the legendary Daryl Hall, who has truly reinvented himself in the digital age,” said Sternberg, CEO of Scott Sternberg Productions. “Other than the regular late-night shows, there isn't a weekly performance series currently on the air where the top bands, artists and musicians can perform their songs and reach audiences nationwide. We look forward to helping fill that void, and we thank all of our station partners who are on board for the premiere.”
“I am amazed at the metamorphosis of the show. From being able to go from a small flip cam operation to an 8 camera, High Definition production that has marquis talent jam in Daryl's living room is incredible. We've been able to establish this series on the web thanks to the fans, and now to cross mediums, represents a tremendous opportunity,” added Wolfson. “We couldn't ask for better partners in doing so than Scott Sternberg and Trifecta Entertainment & Media.”
Added Tribune Programming President Sean Compton: “Live from Daryl's House is the perfect blend of new and classic acts bringing music programming back to broadcast television. Tribune's stations provide a great environment for LFDH on weekends.”
Live from Daryl's House has been cleared in nearly 80% of U.S. homes in the nation's top 200 media markets, as well as all of the top 10, including New York (WPIX), L.A. (KTLA), Chicago (WGN), Dallas (KDAF) and Houston (KIAH). The show has also cleared in such key markets as Philadelphia (CBS-owned KYW), Boston (KBIN) and Atlanta (WATL), and is set to premiere on a number of NBC, Fox and CBS-owned affiliates across the country. Most stations will air a full hour with two original shows back to back on Saturday nights.
“My time at Daryl's House was incredible,” said Train lead singer Pat Monahan about the experience. “Daryl's bandmates were super-seasoned pros and Daryl was gracious and right on with what I hoped such a legend would be like. Thanks all!”
“To get to play with one of my biggest influences and idols was a dream come true,” raves Fitz's Michael “Fitz” Fitzpatrick. “Daryl and the guys put it down and we all left it on the floor! We went pretty deep into the Daryl Hall catalog to sing the first song Daryl ever recorded. It was a day we will never forget!”
Live from Daryl's House made its broadcast debut on WGN America last year to impressive ratings, which spurred interest in syndication. The past four years have marked a steady stream of superlatives and recognition for Live from Daryl's House, with Hall receiving a Webby Award for Best Variety series at the 14th annual ceremony at N.Y.'s Cipriani Wall Street before garnering an O Music Award from MTV earlier this year. The shows have been edited into two 30-minute-long episodes which, in most cases, will air back-to-back.

The Story Behind Rihanna's Coldplay
(Gibson) Chris Martin says Coldplay's new record is "dangerously close" to a musical. The album Mylo Xyloto is out in late October and the tracks have a related theme. Rihanna guests on the song "Princess of China" and Martin has told MTV News why the group needed a female vocalist for the song.

"Our new record is sort of a story. It's not quite a musical, but it's dangerously close. There's a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will Champion's good intentions, he can't do it…"

Martin claims he even wrote "Princess of China" with Rihanna in mind. "We had a song that I'd secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it. We came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK." more on this story

Taylor Swift Takes On Britney Spears
(PopCrush) If you're familiar with Taylor Swift's tendency to perform cover songs by local artists, you might have seen this one coming.

This week, Swift took her Speak Now Tour to Louisiana, and that meant it was her chance to honor one of the state's most famous pop music exports, Britney Spears, with a cover of Brit's 'Lucky.'

Swift performed at the CenturyTel Center and played 'Lucky' during her solo acoustic portion of the set. Her fans joined in as Taylor sang the chorus from the 2000 hit song by Spears, who grew up in Kentwood, La.: "She's so lucky, she's a star / But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart / Thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life / Then why do these tears come at night?" Good Times Coming For The Little Willies
(EMI) The Little Willies have begun recording For The Good Times, the follow-up to their eponymous 2006 debut, which will be released by EMI's Milking Bull Records in January 2012.

The band will be previewing songs from the new album at a few select shows this fall: The Bell House in Brooklyn on October 26, the World Cafe 20th Anniversary Tribute Concert with John Hiatt and the Indigo Girls in Philadelphia on October 28 and the Westhampton PAC in Westhampton, NY on October 29.

The Little Willies – Lee Alexander (bass), Jim Campilongo (guitar), Norah Jones (piano, vocals), Richard Julian (guitar, vocals) and Dan Rieser (drums) – first formed in 2003 as an excuse for the five friends to spend a night playing music together at The Living Room on New York's Lower East Side, but the gig proved too fun for both the musicians and audience for it to remain a one-off. Despite hailing from the far corners of the country – California, Massachusetts, Texas, Delaware – the members of band all grew up listening to a certain breed of classic American music, and relished the opportunity to perform some of their favorite country classics and lesser-known gems. more on this story

Sean Kingston's Near-Fatal Jet Ski Accident Due To Inexperience
(TMZ) Sean Kingston's near-fatal jet ski accident could have been avoided if he had bothered to take a boating safety class, or at least read the manual... according to a newly released police report obtained by TMZ.

Investigators say Kingston's "inexperience" and "inattention" were solely to blame. The cops specifically called him out for not understanding basic boating safety procedures. They believe Kingston stupidly released the throttle while turning the steering wheel at the same time, causing him to lose control over the watercraft.

As we reported in May, the "Beautiful Girls" singer was critically injured when he crashed his brand new jet ski into a bridge in Miami Beach.

The three-month police investigation reveals just how close Kingston was to dying. According to the report, Kingston crashed into the bridge with such force, his head, arms and upper chest, left an imprint in on the cement (see photo below).

Kingston was cited for "careless operation in an accident" and fined a whopping $180. more on this story

(Taste of Country) Lauren Alaina is a high school junior who has yet to attend a prom, and 20-year-old Hunter Hayes never got to go to his prom, either, so it would seem to be the ideal situation for them to go together, right?

"Oh gosh," Hayes said, obviously embarrassed to be put on the spot as the deejays replayed Alaina's interview. "How much did you pay for her to do that?"

RIP For R.E.M.
(Gibson) R.E.M. have decided to "call it a day as a band." After 30 years together, singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills have had enough. Founding drummer Bill Berry left in the mid-'90s.

In their own words: The guys share their thoughts on ending the band. Mike Mills: "During our last tour, and while making Collapse Into Now and putting together this greatest hits retrospective, we started asking ourselves, 'what next?' Working through our music and memories from over three decades was a hell of a journey. We realized that these songs seemed to draw a natural line under the last 31 years of our working together.

"We have always been a band in the truest sense of the word. Brothers who truly love, and respect, each other. We feel kind of like pioneers in this – there's no disharmony here, no falling-outs, no lawyers squaring-off. We've made this decision together, amicably and with each other's best interests at heart. The time just feels right."

Pearl Jam Raring To Go Forward With New Music
(Banana 101.5) Pearl Jam hasn't let all the self-reflection involved with their 20th anniversary celebration turn them in to a nostalgia act, they are still looking to the future.

Prior to drummer Matt Cameron's touring obligations with Soundgarden, the members of PJ hit the studio with longtime friend and producer Brendan O'Brien to record some songs for what will become their tenth studio record. Bassist Jeff Ament recently told Rolling Stone how the album is coming along and how recording was a much needed break from memory lane.

While Pearl Jam is hoping to be finished by early 2012, Manager Kelly Curtis wouldn't be surprised if we hear more new music soon: "They knocked out a bunch of songs in just a couple weeks with Brendan, and everybody was blown away. It's hard for them to sit on that sh*t. They're raring to go forward." Read Ament's comments about the new music here

"I know I have a couple of little things to do before I'm done, but I'm mostly finished and I'm looking forward to the whole thing being put together and the vocals going on," he continues. Jane's Addiction To Controversial Cover Art
(Ultimate Classic Rock) Fans waiting patiently for the Oct. 18 release of Jane's Addiction's fourth studio album, 'The Great Escape Artist,' have a little something to help bide their time: the disc's front cover artwork to stare at.

The cover art, which features what looks to be a lone male figure stripped down to nothing more than his skivvies and hanging out in a bedroom full of fun items like a computer, a diary, Christmas lights and an electric guitar, shares striking stylistic similarities with the original cover of the band's multi-platinum 1990 album, 'Ritual de lo Habitual.'

That cover, which included papier mache figures of a naked man with two (two!) nude women, was replaced by a second cover featuring only black text (featuring the so-called "freedom of speech" text of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution) on a white background. Farrell created the papier mache version, which was used by braver stores. Read more and check out the new art here

Gary Holt Says The Mosh Pit Was Born in Berkeley
Gary Holt of Exodus explores the birthplace of stage diving and mosh pits in the Thrash metal scenes in a new book. The publisher sent this over: In upcoming deluxe thrash metal photo book Murder In The Front Row: Shots From the Bay Area Thrash Metal Epicenter, by Harald Oimoen and Brian Lew, guitarist Gary Holt of Exodus (and currently Slayer) claims that the bruising scenes seen nightly at metal shows everywhere first came to thrash metal from punk at Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley, CA.

"From our first show together with Slayer," Holt writes, "to all the shows with everyone from Death Angel, Possessed, Violence, Legacy, and many others, Ruthie's Inn lives in infamy because it's the one and only birthplace of violence becoming part and parcel to an Exodus show.

"I had never seen a stage dive, a pit, or anything coming close to resembling that before Ruthie's. It was born there, with the help of Wes Robinson and the Exodus Slay Team, and anyone who says different doesn't know what they're talking about or they're lying to you. While the rest of the metal world would later come around and learn the joys of a little good friendly violent fun, it all started there at Ruthie's, end of story." more on this story

Singled Out: Edward Rogers' Porcelain
Today Edward Rogers tells us about the title track from his upcoming fourth solo album, "Porcelain," which hits stores on November 8th. Here is the story:

The inspiration for "Porcelain's" Charlotte came from a Musicians On Call visit to The New York Foundling facility in NYC. That day, I saw children and tiny babies that were given up to the city because their parents couldn't afford or didn't want to keep a sick child in their home. There was one young girl in particular that stayed in my head; she left a lasting image. I kept thinking, "what was going to happen to her while living in this very brittle white room with no one in the world to look after her?" I thought about what a tough and emotionally-disturbing life she was going to face. That experience and her reality motivated me write "Porcelain."

Charlotte holds her head up high
She wants to try and touch the sky
Lives in a world that's hers alone
No one enters fear of the unknown

Even though Charlotte's situation is unknown, I wasn't inspired to write a slow, and obviously sad song. I wanted the song to have an edge to it, reflecting the brittle situation she was put in and how she will have to deal with her future. And, I think the lyrics can have different meaning, different interpretations depending on who's listening. My producer, Don Piper, and I had three guitarists play on the track - Don, along with James Mastro and Pete Kennedy. I've worked with Claudia Chopek (violin) before, but on "Porcelain" her parts fight with the other instruments, adding to the intensity I felt the song needed. The rhythm section, Sal Maida and Konrad Meissner laid back a solid strong wall for the other musicians to play off of, while the intense baritone sax solo, played by Doug Weiselman, adds to the vibe of the song - pushing it to the last chorus and outro. The message is "it's a tough future for you out there"

Charlotte what will become of you
As your love ones fade away from view
No longer there to protect
The girl with the porcelain disease
Fading away
