Bassist Wyman was a founding member of the band who left in the early '90s. Guitarist Taylor was brought into the group in the late '60s, following the departure (and then death) of original member Brian Jones. He left the group in the mid-'70s and was replaced by Wood. more on this story

KK Keeping Mum on Judas Priest Departure
(hennemusic) In a new interview, former Judas Priest guitarist K.K. Downing says he'll never completely share the reasons why he decided to retire from the band prior to their 'farewell' Epitaph world tour.

"It was a set of circumstances that led me to not go out [on tour with Priest] this year," Downing tells Valley reporter Grace Bailey at his home at Astbury Hall in Shropshire, England. "I was kind of geared up for it, but there was a multitude of reasons. It pretty much came down to an unsettlement on my part with working relationships.

"It's like anything else," continues. "If anybody out there is thinking it's hard to live with one woman, they should try to live with four guys and hold it together. [Laughs] It gets to be like that, but obviously, with certain things, I just wasn't completely happy with the way things were, with the way it was, [and I just felt like] it was probably best if I stepped down, and I did." more on this story

Local H Taking On Rush's 2112 For New Year's Eve Bash
Leave it to Local H to ring in the New Year in a big way with not only their own hits but with some hundred years premature Rush 2112 jams! We received the following details:

Chicago's Local H will ring in 2012 with a hometown set at the Bottom Lounge (1375 W. Lake St.). The New Year's Eve show will celebrate the end of the world (as predicted by the Mayans) with a salute to Rush's 2112 and handlebar mustaches.

"This is the end of our sci-fi New Year's trilogy," explains Local H frontman Scott Lucas. "We did 2001 and 2010 -- both of those were obviously nods to Kubrick. For 2012, we had no choice but to celebrate the oeuvre of Roland Emmerich. He's pretty much cornered the market on annihilation and destruction. Expect lots of explosions."

In addition to digging into their own deep catalog, which includes six studio albums, a quasi-greatest hits, a live album, an awesome mix-tape covers record and several EPs, Local H are preparing a slew of their favorite end-of-the-world songs, including bits of Rush's "2112" opus (Side A of the 2112 album). A video montage, edited by Felix Pinero of Bailout Pictures, will accompany the performance. more on this story

Historic Beatles Letter Fetches Big Dollars
(Gibson) If there was ever a question whether The Beatles still draw major interest from music fans around the globe, those skepticisms are gone after the results of a memorabilia auction held Tuesday (November 15) at Christie's in London.

At the auction, a handwritten letter Paul McCartney wrote on August 12, 1960, in which Sir McCartney asks an unnamed drummer to audition for a spot in the Beatles, sold for nearly £35,000 , which translates to about $55,000.

The letter indicates that the guys were seeking someone to hold down the drum rhythms right up until they hired Pete Best, who, of course, was eventually replaced by Ringo Starr. This note also is speculated to be one of the first times the band called themselves, "The Beatles." more on this story

Guns N' Roses Now At Their Best?
(Gibson) With Guns N' Roses killing it on tour this fall, many fans are speculating about a possible follow-up to 2008's Chinese Democracy. After all, with so much hype building up to the at-long-last release of Democracy, it would be nice to get a more spontaneous collection of GN'R tracks, right?

According to longtime keyboardist Dizzy Reed, although the guys are having a blast on the road, he doesn't foresee a new album surfacing in the near future.

Reed added that this current configuration of GN'R is "the best version of Guns N' Roses that I've ever been in. I think everyone is just super-talented, and it's just great chemistry. Everyone is a lot of fun to be around and a lot of fun to play with, so to me it's definitely the best lineup we've had." more on this story

Springsteen Inspired New Coldplay Album
(Gibson) Coldplay singer Chris Martin, no doubt, is as squeaky-clean as it gets. Between his mellow, alternative pop-rock band and cream-of-the-crop wife Gwyneth Paltrow, it makes sense this guy would stay focused down the good-guy path.

So, when Maxim magazine recently asked Martin to reveal the strangest place he's ever woken up, he didn't take the bait. Martin explained that, "I woke up once somewhere south of Chicago in a children's playground at about five in the morning. I have a lot of trouble sleeping, and this is when we used to fight as a band, and I definitely remember taking too many Ambien, but I can't quite work out how I got there. I think I must've done that thing where you take Ambien and you start wandering around but then you just fall asleep somewhere. I woke up in this playground, but it was really quite near our hotel. That's not really a strange place."

As for Coldplay's recent album, Mylo Xyloto, he mentioned that Bruce Springsteen inspired many of the tracks. "Bruce in the past 10 years has turned a whole new generation on to him," he said. "And it's great in your 30s to discover a new favorite band, and at the same time, in the same decade, discover so much about Jay-Z and Kanye. It's been a nice two avenues of inspiration." more on this story

Former SCORPIONS Drummer Interviewed On RADIO SCREAMER (Audio)

.
Nov. 17, 2011
Radio Screamer recently conducted an interview with former SCORPIONS drummer Herman Rarebell. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

Rarebell's new autobiography, "And Speaking Of Scorpions…", is available via Amazon.com.

Commented Herman: "This is the all-too true story of one of the greatest rock and roll bands of the 1980s. But unlike so many autobiographies written these days, I decided to write it for you the fans. No, not just the fans in North America as it's already being portrayed in the media because of the fact, I suspect, it's written in English. It is written for all of our fans everywhere in the known world!!! And since it is for you, rather than focus on all the ordinary array of things such offerings tend to make so predominant, once you open this book be prepared to have the most fun you can legally have anywhere in the literary world while you immerse yourself in the story of the SCORPIONS. It is my gift to you to say thank you for all you have given to me."

Shrewdly concealed within this autobiography is not only what can be considered the quintessential, definitive history of arguably the greatest band of their era, but also a masterful weaving of some of the most entertaining wit, whimsy and sage wisdom ever shared within the covers of a simple book. Sure to be considered a masterpiece by those who have a love of tongue in cheek irony and satire, not to mention great storytelling, it raises the bar for such offerings to a decidedly new level. With his endless anecdotes and tales, Herman draws the lines that led to the group's ascension to the "Mount Olympus of rock music," while his co-writer, Michael Krikorian, clearly lends his assistance to color them in, providing more hues and tones than Crayola ever put in a box of crayons. Together, they set a table and serve up a banquet of sarcasm and memories truly fit for a king! (The King of Monaco to be precise.) There are no sacred cherubs spared from the harpoon of a master yarn-spinner, as the puns, innuendo and endless wordplay are meant to entertain and lampoon much of the history not only of an incredible band but also of a generation. Though having none of the calories but plenty of the guilt, the frankness and honesty expressed upon each sinfully delicious page will never spoil your appetite but will only leave you yearning for more.

Justin Bieber Baby Claim Sunk By TXT Not DNA Test?
(TMZ) Justin Bieber's alleged baby mama sent a text Wednesday to a friend, begging him to erase an incriminating text in which her mom says someone OTHER than Justin Bieber is the baby daddy, and then promising to give him a cut of the action when she scores a payday.

The person to whom Mariah Yeater sent the text asked us to blur his name -- we'll call him John. He has been in touch with Yeater regularly ... even before the baby was born on July 6.

In the text, Yeater pleads for John to "ERASE ALL MESSAGES from my mom." The text goes on to say that her mom sent John messages in the past, stating that baby Tristyn was fathered by Robbie -- an ex-boyfriend.

She then goes on to talk about giving John money if he cooperates: "Ill kick u when we get paid."

All of her texts end with Mariah Laci-- Laci is Mariah's middle name.

And TMZ has seen many other texts between Mariah and John. In one text, Mariah writes, "[John], would you please stress to Robbie how important it is for him to be in his son's life?.." Apparently, Mariah forgot about this text, because she didn't ask John to erase it.

Justin Bieber's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, tells TMZ, "This information proves Mariah Yeater fabricated the story. Our independent investigation indicates Ms. Yeater never meet Justin, she has consistently identified another man as the child's father, and Ms. Yeater and her co-conspirators hatched this scheme in order to extort money from him and to sell her story to the media."

Weitzman adds, "There have been no settlement discussions and there never will be." more on this story

Taylor Swift's 60 Minutes Profile Preview
Country music star Taylor Swift will be the focus of a segment on CBS's 60 Minutes this coming Sunday. Here are the details: The fact that millions of young fans look up to her is something music sensation Taylor Swift takes very seriously. In fact, the 21-yr.-old singer-songwriter tells Lesley Stahl it's a responsibility she has an obligation to handle responsibly. Stahl's profile of the young superstar will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES, Sunday, Nov. 20 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Swift says she is reminded of her status as role model every day. "I definitely think about a million people when I am getting dressed in the morning," she tells Stahl. "That's just part of my life now. I think it's my responsibility to know it and to be conscious of it."

She eschews the notion that stars aren't responsible for other people's children. "It would be really easy to say...I'm 21 now. I do what I want. You raise your kids. But...that's not the truth of it. The truth of it is that every singer out there with songs on the radio is raising the next generation. So make your words count," says Swift. Selena Gomez: Not Enough Evidence To Charge Stalker
(TMZ) Thomas Brodnicki -- the man who allegedly told his shrink and an LAPD detective he had many conversations with God about killing Selena Gomez -- has just had his felony stalking charge dismissed, and he's about to go free, TMZ reported Wednesday afternoon.

Although LAPD detectives say Brodnicki is a "credible threat" to Gomez, the judge said there wasn't sufficient evidence that Brodnicki intended to convey threats to Selena -- an element of the crime which prosecutors must prove.

The judge just said Brodnicki will be held for 30 minutes, to give prosecutors a chance to present sufficient evidence -- if that doesn't happen, Brodnicki will be a free man.

There is, however, a civil restraining order against him, requiring him to stay clear of Selena.

TMZ has a producer in the courtroom who heard Brodnicki's lawyer say to Brodnicki after the judge's ruling, "Get the f**k out while you can." more on this story

New Kids on the Block's Joey McIntyre Releasing Christmas Album
New Kids on the Block star Joey McIntyre is getting in the holiday spirit with the release of his new album, Come Home For Christmas, on Tuesday, November 29 on iTunes.

"I've always known I would record a Christmas album," says McIntyre. "These wonderful standards have a warm special place in my heart. I have enjoyed singing them on so many snowy walks through my childhood hometown of Boston and they have soothed my homesickness out in Hollywood during the holidays."

For the holiday standards that make up the self-released Come Home For Christmas, the NKOTB singer set out to record versions of some of his favorites that evoke holiday memories and yet still retain their traditional sound. Highlights include: a fun duet with actor-comedian Mario Cantone on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," the classic "Peace On Earth" on which he is joined by "one of my good friends and mentors," NKOTB's Jordan Knight, and a moving version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" which features his sister Carol Gallagher, "with whom I sang my first-ever song on stage when I was six-years-old." JOEY produced and arranged the album with long time collaborater Rob Lewis, which was recorded in Los Angeles, Boston and New York. more on this story

Ingrid Michaelson Sets Album Release and Streaming New Song
Ingrid Michaelson has set a January 24th release date for her fourth album, Human Again.

Human Again, produced by David Kahne (Regina Spektor, Paul McCartney), is a triumph in aural range, the music veers from orchestral to percussive, while her accompanying voice swells from contralto to soprano. These darker, impassioned songs plumb the breadth of human emotion and throw a wrench in Michaelson's reputation as the crafter of dainty love songs. One of the most gutting is the album's first single, "Ghost," a hushed reflection on lost romance that unfurls ruefully from its opening line.

"The album is called Human Again because it's taken me a very long time to be happy," explained Michaelson. "The music on this album might surprise some people. I was really singing out, physically; I was writing about a really dark time in my life."

Fans can download the debut single, "Ghost," on iTunes and Amazon now as well as stream the track at EW.com here.

Shaq Denied
(TMZ) Shaquille O'Neal couldn't power his way through the lane at a New York nightclub this weekend -- getting TURNED AWAY at the door ... all because he was dressed like a lumberjack.

TMZ has learned ... Shaq rolled up to nightclub/restaurant Mars 2112 on Saturday night wearing jeans, a sweatshirt, tennis shoes and a beanie (pictured above with random fan).

But according to the club promoter, Mike Mogul, Shaq's attire wasn't up to club standards ... so security politely informed the retired NBA star that he would not be allowed inside.

Sources at the club tell us Shaq calmly replied, "Are you serious?" ... then shrugged his shoulders and walked down the street to another place that welcomed The Diesel with open arms.

The move is pretty damn shocking, considering TONS of clubs would pay some serious jack to get Shaq to stop by, no matter what he was wearing!!

Denzel Washington does not have the same problem. more on this story

Love & Hip Hop Brawls Lead To Safety Concerns
(TMZ) Security has been completely revamped on the set of "Love & Hip Hop" -- including a total ban on all glass and metal silverware -- after several bloody, face-stomping, weave-pulling fights among cast members.

Fabolous' baby mama Emily Bustamante tells TMZ, the massive blowout between Jim Jones' fiancee Chrissy Lampkin and Juelz Santana's lady Kimbella Vanderhee during Monday's episode was the final straw (watch here).

We're told producers are fed up with all the injuries on set from girl-on-girl violence -- the bloodshed, the stitches -- and have decided to institute an all-plastic policy while camera are rolling ... plastic cups, plastic knives, plastic everything.

But it doesn't end there -- we're told each cast member will now be accompanied by a personal body guard wherever he or she goes.

(TMZ) More legal drama for Katt Williams ... TMZ has learned the comic and a female companion were questioned by police in Ohio yesterday over an alleged shoplifting incident at a Best Buy store ... but this time, Katt was NOT arrested.

Once police arrived to the scene, we're told cops questioned Katt, his female friend and other suspected posse members.

We're told .... after a brief investigation, Katt was NOT arrested -- neither was the woman -- but someone in the group was cited for a "minor misdemeanor."

Katt has a long, storied history with cops -- earlier this year he was arrested after a standoff with a tractor driver ... and before that, he faced off with the boys in blue in Beverly Hills after getting into a shouting match with another dude.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Christmas Punch Leads To Litigation
(TMZ) The guy who was punched in the mouth during a fancy night out with one of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" last year is out for revenge ... not only against his attacker, but against one of the most famous hotels in the world.

TMZ broke the story ... Lisa Vanderpump strolled into the legendary Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel to have a drink with L.A. news reporter Robert Kovacik on Christmas Eve last year ... when a fight broke out and Kovacik got a face full of knuckles.

Now, Kovacik has filed a lawsuit against the attacker, Roger Talavera, and the hotel -- claiming his attacker had been drinking like a fish before the incident ... and the hotel SHOULD have cut him off ... but they didn't.

Kovacik claims Talavera got loud and began spewing threats to people in the bar -- but hotel employees allegedly did nothing to defuse the situation.

Kovacik says Talavera eventually made his way over to his table and allegedly punched him in the mouth for no reason -- splitting his lip so badly, that he needed stitches.

Kovacik wants both Talavera AND the hotel to pay for his medical expenses and other unspecified damages -- and it seems he's after some serious cash.

(TMZ) Gary Busey got wasted and shouldered a 57-year-old woman to the ground at an Oklahoma airport recently ... in a mad sprint to board an airplane -- this according to a new lawsuit filed against the actor.

The woman -- named Carla Loeffler -- filed the lawsuit in L.A. County Superior Court, claiming she and Busey were waiting for the same flight at Tulsa airport back in May ... when Busey shouldered her without provocation.

According to Loeffler, Busey had been biding his time downing drinks at the airport ... and by the time their flight was called, he was completely faded.

Loeffler claims she was waiting in line on the jetway to board the flight -- and Busey barreled past her in an effort to cut the line, violently knocking her to the ground.

According to the lawsuit, Loeffler sustained injuries as a result of the takedown and she's now demanding unspecified damages. Attempts to reach Gary were unsuccessful. more on this story

Two Very Different Westerns To Shoot It Out on December 6th
(MVD) On December 6, two competing Westerns hit store shelves, and they offer two very different possibilities for the genre's future.

Cowboys & Aliens is a big studio Western that mixes in sci-fi, CGI and noisy blockbuster elements, seeming distrustful that today's audiences will accept a straight-ahead Western.

The Scarlet Worm (on DVD and Blu-Ray from Unearthed Films/MVD), on the other hand, is a glowingly reviewed independent Western that proves a horse opera can still capture the public's imagination - even on a low budget - as long as its story offers something fresh and original within the traditional framework. more on this story

Troy Aikman Divorce Discovered
(TMZ) Troy Aikman is officially a single man ... and has been for months ... after a judge quietly signed off on his divorce back in April ... TMZ has learned.

Back in January, Troy and Rhonda Aikman announced they had separated after ten years of marriage ... but TMZ has uncovered official public records, signed by Troy, in which the Dallas Cowboys legend states that an "agreed final decree of divorce" has been issued and it lists April 12, 2011 as the day the marriage was legally terminated.

Troy and Rhonda have 2 kids together -- and back in January, they released a joint statement saying, "We remain deeply committed to our children ... during this period of adjustment"

Just a few months before the two separated, Troy and Rhonda were already divvying up the family assets. TMZ obtained official documents which show Rhonda gave up her stake in the family mansion in Dallas last November. It's unclear if she got any compensation for taking her name off the deed ... but just a few months later, she purchased a home, also in Dallas, for roughly $1.5 mil.

TMZ called Aikman's rep for comment -- so far, no response.

Music CDs Being Killed Off?
(Banana 101.5) After it virtually killed off the cassette tape and the short lived mini-disc, the compact disc may be dead within two years according to industry insiders.

According to Side Line Music Magazine, the shelf life of the CD is set to expire before 2013. The magazine reports that most major labels are planning to stop producing the little shiny discs that were all the rage in the 80′s, and replace them with streaming and digital download options.

Most of these plans are set to take effect at some point in 2012, with the only CD's still available being limited edition prints — which will only be made for major artists. more on this story

Coheed and Cambria Reunite With Former Member
Coheed and Cambria are bringing back back former drummer Josh Eppard to replace Chris Pennie (Dillinger Escape Plan) who left the group earlier this month.

Josh Eppard had this to say on the band's website: Life is odd. I think its fair to say that Coheed and Cambria while often mysterious, has always had a meaningful and honest relationship with it's supporters. I thought it'd be appropriate at this time to address the people that keep the COCA universe alive and well and that's you guys...the fans. The last 5 years was both a humbling learning experience and a heart breaking journey into darkness and eventually the light. I honestly never thought I'd see the day I would be reunited with my bandmates and lifelong friends. I regretted not being a part of Coheed from the day they moved on. Although many things were said in the early part of my first years without the band, I think its clear to those who know me that it was the byproduct of anger and disappointment -with myself. Claudio and Travis's (and Mic's) music has always spoke to me in a way that no other music did. I love them both dearly and missed them with all of my heart. After my time in Coheed, I eventually got clean and got real with myself. With the help of my loved ones I got back on my feet and that meant playing music again. I'd like to extend an enormous debt of gratitude to Fred Masherino who I played with in Terrible Things for the last 2 years. It's no secret that with the damage I had done to my reputation, no one was taking any chances on me. Fred did and I thank him for that. He taught me so much about humility and reminded me of why I play music in the first place. That being said, it was always clear to me playing with anyone that it would never be the magic that I felt with Coheed. I can't believe I get a chance to play for the best fans in the world again. Not many people get a chance to put back together the things they broke long ago. It's good to be back. Welcome home indeed.

And the band had this to say: We didn't originally plan to make a big splash about this, but when Chris made his announcement, we were ultimately compelled to. We didn't want anyone to be concerned about the state of the band, and trying to keep things quiet was proving to be really tough. And besides, we're just really excited and wanted to share that feeling with you. more on this story

Pantera's Rex Brown Not Down About Changing Bands
Revolver caught up with former Pantera bassist Rex Brown to learn about his recent departure from Down to devote his time to his new band Kill Devil Hill and to them know about his autobiography plans.

Here are two excerpts from the interview: You split with Down earlier this year. What caused you to leave? Phil has a lot side projects that he does, so he spends a lot of time focusing on them. And after a while, I decided I needed something new. There's no animosity there, but I need to jam, I need to keep moving down the road. I mean, Phil and I go back 23 years, so it's all good. We talked recently. That's fine. I just needed a change. I'm working on the book right now, so you're going to have to wait to hear about it.

We've heard about the book—is there a focus to it? Pantera? Down? Or just Rex over the years? I try to be really honest and genuine about how my life's been these past years. I have a co-writer, and I've got over 60 hours of tape, and I want to talk about my experiences during this time. With Pantera…when all of that went down, I didn't really talk about anything in the press. I didn't want to take any part in the he-said-she-said bullsh*t. So this is my perspective on the whole bit. It's about the good times, really, not the bad stuff, because that's out there in the press, and it's something I hate. But hey, it makes good copy. Check out the full interview here, it's a good one!

Johnny A Robbed
(Gibson) Johnny A. has had some guitars stolen. The Gibson Signature guitarist returned home last weekend from a three-week tour of Japan and Europe to find three of his favorite instruments gone.

"I want to make it difficult for anybody to fence these," Johnny A. said yesterday. "It's me being proactive. Someone knows someone who did it, someone's going to talk, it will eventually get back to the people who took them."

Two of the three guitars stolen were unique. One is a 1967 Gibson EB-2 bass with a rare Burgundy Metallic finish. Another is one of just 40 produced, a Gibson Montana Custom Advanced Jumbo acoustic with a Sunburst finish. That guitar is identifiable by its slimmer body and unusual three-piece back, Johnny says. The third guitar is of sentimental value to Johnny because it was a Christmas gift from his family. It's a Hofner re-issue McCartney bass. more on this story

Singled Out: Blue Moon Harem's Finland
Today Demetri J from Blue Moon Harem tells us about the title track from their brand new album "Finland". Here is the story:

This song represents the human struggle. It is a song about the journey we all take in life. The hard road traveled in reaching ours goals and the race against time in getting to our God given destiny. The name of the track "Finland" came to mind as we pictured our journey as often being a long and grueling, cold, wintery like affair, set with pitfalls along the way, mountains to climb and valleys to cross.. The music for the track is powerful and ominous which lends itself well to the dramatization of the hard struggles we all go thru in life.

The cinematic stereo imaging effects of the electric guitars further add to the notion of being on that uncertain course while the hard and pounding drums showcase our perseverance and determination to arrive at our destination. The heartfelt, searing vocal performance characterizes our ongoing strength and determination…

Please listen to the song and sense the longing, hunger and passion of the human experience thru the eyes and ears of Blue Moon Harem!

Roth Driving Force Behind Van Halen/Interscope Signing

Monday, 14 November 2011

Billboard.com has an interesting story about the series of meetings that Van Halen had with Interscope Records that “presented the band with a global plan that included extensive marketing, merchandising, touring and, of course, recordings.” Here’s the Billboard article, followed by our own comments:

Van Halen To Sign With Interscope

Iconic rock band Van Halen are set to sign with Interscope Records, says a source familiar with the negotiations. The deal is expected to be finalized next week, marking the first time in 35 years that the band will not release music through Warner Music, its longtime label home.

It had been rumored — and reported — that the band was joining the Columbia Records roster. In fact, an insider tells The Hollywood Reporter that the contract for the Sony deal was drawn up and approved but hadn’t been signed when Universal Music stepped into the picture.

The signing was a group effort involving UMG chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge, UMG International COO Max Hole, Interscope Geffen A&M vice chairman Steve Berman and Interscope’s Jimmy Iovine, who, says a source, “heard the band was available and wanted to work with them. It was decided at the 11th hour.” What came next was a series of meetings that presented the band with a global plan that included extensive marketing, merchandising, touring and, of course, recordings.

So what derailed the Columbia deal? The usual rock band complications, says an insider. While the group reunited with original singer David Lee Roth in 2006, the Sony label could not come to terms with Roth, who has a separate management, legal and accounting team than the other three members, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his son Wolfgang (who replaced bassist Michael Anthony) and drummer Alex Van Halen. The main issue for Roth? He was apparently adamant about being on a west coast label. “He was never on board [with Columbia],” says the source. “It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out.”

It’s expected that as frontman, Roth will have to carry much of the marketing burden and it seems the band members ultimately want their singer to be happy with the deal which is why they went with Universal’s west coast-based Interscope.

A new album, their first studio effort since 1984, is believed to be nearly finished with the hope that it can be released in 2012. The band is expected to make a “special announcement” on Nov. 30 at the Grammy Awards nominations concert, which will air live on CBS from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater.

An Interscope rep had no comment.

First, a note from VHND regarding the last paragraph of the above article. The new album has actually been done for quite awhile – mixing was completed in August and mastering was done in September. Also, it will definitely be released in early 2012.

As an extension of the article, sources have told VHND that David Lee Roth was the driving force behind the move to Interscope (A division of Universal – which has a stable of artists such as U2 and the Police) and it seems his desire was to be on a more “hip” label. One that would take advantage of all promotion tools available (such as new media and new technology). While the other three members (Wolf, Alex and Eddie) were ready to go with Columbia, it was Roth who prevailed upon them to go with Interscope and when presented with Interscope’s package they agreed it was the way to go.

It must be noted that, if Roth will be charged with promotions with the new album, Van Halen is in good hands. Simply put, this is something DLR does VERY well. Since Ed and Alex don’t particularly like interviews it seems only natural to place this in the capable hands of Roth, who guided the Van Halen promotional ship from 1978 to 1984.

It’s especially interesting that the band chose Interscope over Columbia mainly because of Roth. It’s also very exciting that the story implies that Roth might do much of the marketing, which makes sense, as that’s what he was born to do! All this shows that Roth has quite a bit of say in what Van Halen does!

The new "Fame: Drake" comic is set to be released in January 2012 and will feature the art of Mike Johnson and the cover by Joe Phillips.

He made a name for himself as the wheelchair bound Jimmy Brooks on "Degrassi: the Next Generation" but when Aubrey Graham went by his middle name, Drake, he rocketed to stardom. Now Bluewater Comics shares the story of how Drake went from Canadian teen-melodrama to the hip hop star that worked with Lil Wayne's stable of musicians with the comic "Fame: Drake."

"The New York Times" best selling writer Marc Shapiro, who is no stranger to the bio-comic, is giving his take on what makes Drake – Drake. "What makes Drake such a distinctive creative personality is that he's not just one thing. His music encompasses hip-hop, rap, old style rhythm and blues, soul and pop. And he's somebody whose music is commercial enough that you can actually hear his music on the radio if you search long enough," said Shapiro, who also authored "Fame: Selena Gomez" and "Infamous: Lindsay Lohan." more on this story

James Murphy of Testament and Death Needs Help in Brain Tumor Fight
(Rock News Desk) Former Testament and Death guitarist James Murphy fought off a brain tumor in 2001 but now he reports it's come back. Murphy says a recent MRI scan showed his tumour had "only grown a little" meaning surgery or radiation therapy was not necessary in the short term. Doctors have increased the dosage of his hormone inhibitor drugs – but the side effects make it nearly impossible for him to work and he admits he could face bankruptcy if he stops.

His only option to stave off descent into a vicious debt cycle is a switch to drugs which won't knock him off his feet. But that would cost $1000 a month for six months."Simply put, five pills of my current med per day, spread throughout the day for maximum benefit, keep me fatigued and nauseous," Murphy tells Rock News Desk. "The alternative drug is much, much more expensive, but it's meant to work better, have less side-effects per pill, and I'd have to take far fewer pills per week to get the same benefit.

"Changing is a no-brainer: it would return me to normal functionality, more or less. The cost is the issue." Find out how you can help

Fired Spider-Man Musical Producer Calls Out U2's Bono
(Rock News Desk) The director who worked on Bono and the Edge's Spider-Man musical says she was sacked as a scapegoat after nine years of work – even though the U2 men didn't know enough about the situation to support her dismissal.

Julie Taymor, who's behind the successful Lion King musical and once described herself as someone who "didn't want to play Cinderella or Snow White – I wanted to be the Wicked Witch of the West," believes she was unfairly dismissed after Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark became a laughing-stock over its huge debts and series of script rewrites and rehearsal accidents.

Several actors were hospitalised during the development of the show and by the time it opened it was the most expensive potential flop in Broadway history, with a debt believed to be over $75m. It's been hammered by critics for poor music and a confusing storyline – but Taymor says the successful elements which involve live-action puppetry and the added dimension of seeing the puppetmasters in action were all her ideas. more on this story

Waylon Speed Release Party

The Boots EP is comprised of four tracks recorded not long after the release of their critically-acclaimed Horseshoes and Hand Grenades double LP last March. Degrade, Meet Me in the Middle, Tragedy, and Shine, were all recorded in the raw and creative country recording space of Trey's (Phish) Barn, in their home state of Vermont. Like all of their songs, these rockers' creations are a collaborative effort from members Noah Crowther (bass/vocals), Justin Crowther (drums), Reverend Chitwood Hammaker (guitar), and Kelly Ravin (guitar/vocals). Recorded and mastered by Barn/Staff Engineer Ben Collette, these cuts burn with the fiery country outlaw rock that is uniquely Waylon Speed and demonstrate the band's skill at shredding the perceived boundaries of rock n roll.

"Rock N Roll Resort is the ultimate venue to introduce The Boots EP," says musician Kelly Ravin, "because it's filled with the live music scene's most avid fans in an intimate, round-the-clock party." more on this story

Glen Campbell, Bill Medley, Grateful Dead Rarities Set For Release

The January rollout will also feature, as part of the label's ongoing partnership with ABKCO Music & Records, Inc., The Tymes' So Much in Love and the complete Cameo recordings of jazz trumpeter Maynard Ferguson.

The multi-talented Glen Campbell, who has enjoyed a 50-year career as singer, guitarist and television personality, is the recent recipient of much warm sentiment as he released his final album and embarked on his final tour. Campbell's 1975 Live in Japan was originally issued only across the Pacific. The album will receive its worldwide CD release on January 24, 2011. Glen is at the peak of his powers here, pulling favorites from his vaunted songbook while displaying his usual unerring taste in covers (Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe," Paul Anka's "My Way"). The album was released in a gorgeous gatefold package that Real Gone has faithfully reproduced along with other graphic elements. Old Crow Medicine Show Plan Special Gold Release
Old Crow Medicine Show will celebrate their song "Wagon Wheel," being certified Gold by the RIAA, with sales nearing 600,000 digital tracks, with the release a "Wagon Wheel" Limited Edition 7" Vinyl beginning the week of November 22, 2011.

Originally sketched by Bob Dylan and later finished by Old Crow Medicine Show's Ketch Secor, "Wagon Wheel" remains the band's most revered and top-selling single. The 7" vinyl will be numbered and feature a previously unreleased b-side, "All Night Long" (Live).

Secor reflects on the history of "Wagon Wheel": "Wagon Wheel" is a gold record 75 years in the making. Back in 1995, I first heard Bob Dylan sing that striking chorus on his unfinished 1972 studio outtake of "Rock Me Mama". Being an audacious, banjo-picking teenager, I quickly rattled off three verses and rushed it out to coffeehouses and street corners, singing it to anyone who would listen. In 2003, seeking a copyright to the song, I learned that Dylan had credited it to Memphis songster Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup, who recorded the 1950's boogie-woogie number "Rock Me Mama." From there, I learned that Crudup attributed the song to Mississippi-turned-Chicagoan Big Bill Broonzy, who recorded it way back in the late 1920's. So, from Big Bill to Big Boy to Bob and on down to me, "Wagon Wheel" has become a true American folksong, borrowed, half-stolen, and sung out far and wide. The rest, as they say, is history. more on this story

Singled Out: Agents of Mercy's Citadel
Today Agents of Mercy's Roine Stolt (who is also in Transatlantic) tells us about "Citadel" from their brand new album "The Black Forest". Here is the story:

Citadel: Young and beautiful – well maybe not forever. How deep is our fear to get old, ugly and rejected? How far are we prepared to go? Is there a limit to how much we are willing to spend on plastic surgery, implants and beauty products today? In the shape of "The Blood Countess" we meet Elzbeth Bathory in the song 'Citadel' from Agents of Mercy's new album 'The Black Forest'.

Countess Elzbeth Bathory (1560-1614) of Hungarian nobility, was known as the blood countess, rumored to kill near 650 young women in the belief that their blood could make her skin young and glowing again. She's known as the female Count Dracula and a both scary and tragic part of Hungarian history. A female serial killer to boot – what a creepy theme for a prog rock tune.
