Today's Day in Rock
Black Sabbath Have 15 New Songs
(Metal Injection) Almost a year after announcing their reunion, Black Sabbath are hard at work in the studio working on their first new album in 33+ years at Shangri La Studios in Malibu and we have some exclusive info on the progress.
The band is currently in the studio recording vocals with Rick Rubin. There are 15 songs that have been written, and according to Geezer Butler, 12 of them will make the record, most likely with the additional three serving as bonus tracks for different special editions.
Apparently, guitarist Tony Iommi completed all 15 guitar tracks during the band's sessions in England earlier this year. more details here.
Rolling Stones Leak Upcoming Concerts Setlists?
(Gibson) The Rolling Stones have hinted at the possible running order of their late 2012 dates with a hand-written setlist posted on Twitter.
The image, appearing to show a full set list of Stones tracks, was posted online shortly before the band announced their dates in London and New York in November and December.
Many hits are included, of course, but new songs "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot" from forthcoming compilation GRRR! are nowhere to be seen. And nor is "Satisfaction." See the list here.
Guns N' Roses and Jack White Bridge School Concert To Be Webcast
Fans that won't be able to attend this year's Bridge School benefit concert featuring Guns N' Roses and Jack White will be able to watch it online.
Organizers have announced that the entire event will be webcast as donate-per-view event on Facebook. They state that "a donation to The Bridge School of $5 or greater is asked to gain access to the webcast."
The concert will also feature Neil Young & Crazy Horse The Flaming Lips, Ray LaMontagne, Sarah McLachlan, Foster The People, Lucinda Williams, Steve Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers, k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang, and Gary Clark Jr. and will take place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre this Saturday only, Oct. 20th. Ozzy, Rolling Stones, AC/DC Score Top Riffs of the 80s
(Gibson) Gibson has selected their picks for the top guitar riffs of the 80s. Here are their top 3 picks:
3. Ozzy Osbourne (featuring Randy Rhoads), "Crazy Train": In the 1980s, you couldn't throw a dead cat in a music store without hitting some kid playing this Randy Rhoads warhorse. The churning, sinister opening section hurls the song forward and creates a momentum that never lets up, even as Ozzy takes it off the rails.
2. The Rolling Stones, "Start Me Up": Twelve years after "Honky Tonk Women," Keith Richards could still conjure an open-tuned gem like no one else. This 1981 classic is so stirring that nearly 30 years later you're still unlikely see a football stadium not use it to psych their fans up for a kickoff.
1. AC/DC, "Back in Black": Perhaps the greatest riff-oriented album of all time is the band's 1980 farewell to dearly departed singer Bon Scott. Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young cooked up some of the greatest riffs of their career on this magnum opus (including "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Hell's Bells" and "Have a Drink on Me"), but none is more memorable than the hard and heavy title track. See the full top 10 and read the readers complaints over omissions here.
Soulfly Member Retiring From Music
Soulfly drummer David Kinkade has decided to retire from music after a career which saw him also play with Borknagar, Arsis and Malevolent Creation.
Kinkade will play a final concert with Soulfly next Tuesday, October 23 at the Hollywood Awards in Bangkok, Thailand, according to Metal Nation
They report that he informed fans of the reason for his decision via a series of Facebook postings which read in part: "I decided two months ago that music is no longer worth the effort to me anymore. After this, I'm going to retire from drumming and music all together and focus on my family rather than myself.
"I've fought my hardest for 'my dream' in music over the past 10 years and failed. [Playing with Borknagar in] Norway was the pinnacle of mistakes and I'll never let myself off the hook for it. I moved across the world for music, spent hundreds of thousands of $$$ and in the end I ended up digging myself into a deeper hole than before. I'm still trying to recover from that f**k-up.
"The only bit of light that my career ever saw was in the end, I was able to make a record and play some huge shows with a guy [Soulfly/ex-Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera] whose music I grew up idolizing. Thats good enough for me." You can read the rest of his statement here.
Call Of Duty For AC/DC's Back In Black

Carradine Narrates Neil Young
(Gibson) Neil Young's memoir Waging Heavy Peace is already acclaimed. An audiobook version is out also, read by actor Keith Carradine, brother of David and part of the Carradine acting dynasty. Carradine may seem an odd choice to some, but he's long been a musician himself. In 1975, he performed his own song "I'm Easy" in the movie Nashville – it won a Golden Globe and an Oscar.
Rolling Stone says, "Waging Heavy Peace isn't a traditional rock memoir. Written throughout 2011, it addresses everything from the recent Crazy Horse reunion back to the formation of Buffalo Springfield – but it's presented in a completely non-linear way. Young also stops the narrative from time to time to complain about the audio quality of MP3s and go into detail about his on-going electric car project. The end result is a glimpse right into Young's brain." Listen to Keith Carradine reading Neil Young
Playing With Styx Helps Panozzo Stay Healthy With AIDS
Chuck Panozzo hasn't let his battle with AIDS stop him from performing with Styx. In fact, he believes that the performances are helping him stay healthy.
Panozzo still performs with the band at select concert dates following his news over a decade ago that he is living with AIDS and in an extensive new interview, he credits the band and his continued involvement with them in helping him with the battle.
"What the band has taught me psychologically is that I need to go out and be with my band as they continue their legacy in the rock n' roll world forever," he told JC Online. "How could that not help me in my recovery process? I have a band that is willing to make sure that I stay healthy."

The video is the sixth episode of material from the band's recently launched online TV channel, WSTV.
Coverdale updated fans this summer on the band's current projects, saying, "We are busily mixing and editing a live album and a separate in-concert DVD from the 'Forevermore' world tour, plus mixing an special expanded editions of 'Into The Light' and 'Restless Heart'. Plus archiving so much audio and visual material and content from so many years. But [we're] definitely not [working on] a whole new studio album at this time. Quite simply we wouldn't have time to write and record a new studio album. It was never on our agenda for 2012."
