Today's Day in Rock

Unreleased Freddie Mercury Vocals For New Queen Album
(Rock News Desk) Queen are working on a brand new album set to featured previously unheard vocals from late singer Freddie Mercury.

Guitarist Brian May has revealed he and drummer Roger Taylor are searching through their archives for material the band worked on before their frontman died in 1991. And he says there are enough songs to release a Queen record and also create an update to their 2002 musical We Will Rock You.

May tells the Daily Star the pair are "going through some old drawers" and adds: "As well as seeing what we can unearth, we want to do a new musical to follow We Will Rock You." more on this story

Steven Tyler Did Fall But Not Off The Wagon
(Rock News Desk) Steven Tyler accepts people suspected he was drinking again after news broke of his latest collapse – and he knows he'll live under the shadow of those doubts for ever.

The singer smashed two teeth and sustained a black eye when he took a tumble in his hotel shower in Paraguay on Tuesday, forcing the postponement of Aerosmith's concert in Asuncion. But the band delivered their rescheduled 17-song show on Wednesday night – with Tyler, 63, even playing harmonica despite the pain in his mouth.

The official reason for his collapse was given as an attack of food poisoning. But the singer told the Today Show that he knew many people would assume it was drink-related, following the spectacular dive in 2009 which forced Aerosmith on hiatus and sent him into rehab. more on this story

Poison Deny Song Theft
(Rock News Desk) Poison insist there's no truth behind a lawsuit which accuses them of stealing some of the songs which appeared on their debut album Look What the Cat Dragged In.

They're the subject of a lawsuit filed by two musicians who worked with guitarist CC DeVille before he joined Poison and made it big. Billy McCarthy and James Stonich auditioned DeVille for their outfit Kid Rocker, and they say the tryout included two of their songs which DeVille later incorporated into Poison tracks.

Now a lawyer representing Bret Michaels and co says the band are ready to defend their position. Mark D Passin tells the Hollywood Reporter, "Obviously, if the Poison songs that are the subject of the complaint infringed any songs written by plaintiffs McCarthy and Stonich, they would have filed their lawsuit over 20 years ago." more on this story

Judas Priest Star Says Metal An Endangered Species
(Gibson) Former Judas Priest guitarist Kenneth "K.K." Downing wants to make sure metal fans pay for their heavy music. In a message on his official website, Downing poured out his heart about the state of the music industry, stating that many of his friends in the business are having a rough time making ends meet.

"I must urge everyone to try pay for their music because without your support our beloved metal will become an endangered species if it is not that way already," he said. "I have many friends and associates that once had a good career and prospects; these include producers, record engineers, managers and of course many musicians. Now most of them are struggling to make ends meet and stay in the business…"

He added that while many bands are making albums by themselves in basements and garages, he thinks that approach is missing something. "Even as good as we thought we were back in the day we would never have made the records we did without the professionals that helped us to achieve our goals," he said. more on this story

How Metallica Teamed Up With Lou Reed
(hennemusic) The promotion machine continues to roll for Lou Reed and Metallica, as they talk to the press about their forthcoming release, "Lulu," due next week.

Lou, along with Lars and James from Metallica, sat down for an interview with the Norwegian TV show, "Lydverket."

Lars explains how the project was introduced to the metal band. "Literally, it was [because] he asked," began Ulrich. "Lou says, 'Let's make a record with Lou.' OK, cool. The problem is people don't ask us very much; I mean, we don't go out and look for it; we don't put an ad in the paper – 'Rock band looking for otherworldly experiences.' But when they come to us, great, sounds awesome." Check out the video here

Ozzy Osbourne Gets Unusual Halloween Treat
(Gibson) What's the perfect gift for the metal man who has everything, Ozzy Osbourne? Breakfast cereal.

That's right! The "Crazy Train" vocalist has simple taste when it comes to dining and, apparently, he's a mega fan of the honey-coated British breakfast food Sugar Puffs. Sugar Puffs aren't available in the U.S., where he usually lives, so Osbourne reportedly orders boxes and boxes of the cereal on a regular basis, just to stock up. Who wants to be without their favorite wake-up food, right? Now, now the cereal's manufacturer has sent Osbourne 50 boxes of a new kind of cereal, Spooky Puffs, for Halloween.

A spokesperson for the brand, in a release, stated that, "We made sure he has enough to go around at Halloween." The special edition, Halloween-themed breakfast delicacy – represented by a fuzzy, yellow beast called, the Honey Monster – has a toffee apple flavor. Looks like we know what kiddies who arrive at Ozzy's mansion to trick-or-treat are going to get in their pillow cases and Halloween baskets this year. more on this story

Judas Priest Can't Wait To Hear James Durbin's Debut
(hennemusic) Form the very first week of live performance on American Idol last season, where rocker James Durbin covered Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Coming," to the season finale months later – where the metal gods actually joined James for a live double-shot, it's safe to say the Judas Priest-James Durbin connection is solid and growing stronger all the time.

Durbin's debut, "Memories Of A Beautiful Disaster," is due November 21 and many fans await the album's release – including the members of Judas Priest. "I can't wait to hear it," says Priest frontman Rob Halford. "Apparently, the underground vibe is that, again, he's staying true to his course and he's making some great songs."

"We love James," Halford continues, "because he's really what metal is about. He really stood his ground [on Idol]; if you saw some of those interviews [where] they wanted him to do this song or that song…he's like 'no, I'm a metal singer and I want to do my own thing.' James said, 'When I do my thing, it's going to be metal: it's going to be strong, powerful music.' James, alone, introduced that attitude into 30-something million homes in America and then, of course, it goes around the world." more on this story

Magnus has played with us since 2008 and did some epic tours/shows with us. We took this joint decision after going through plans for next year and we needed to address this within the band before we start the new album process. There aren't now and have never been any hard feelings between us and we wish him the best in any future endeavors. Singled Out: The Armed's Pushing Daisies and Young & Beautiful
Today Tony Wolski from The Armed tells us about "Pushing Daisies" and "Young & Beautiful" from their brand new EP "Young & Beautiful," which features a guest appearance from Ex- Dillinger Escape Plan, Coheed & Cambria drummer Chris Pennie. Here is the story:

Young & Beautiful- We really wanted to start the EP off with a sudden burst of really violent noise. We wanted there to be a sense of absolute urgency. The EP is only five songs long anyways you know? We didn't wanna waste any time getting into it. The main verse riff was crafted while having the specific goal of making the most heavy and crushing single riff we had done yet in mind. Lyrically, this song is about not really fitting into any of the aggressive music cliques where we come from. It touches on something Jello Biafra wrote about 25 years ago...the idea that "punk's not dead it just deserves to die when it becomes another stale cartoon." Imagine if the DKs or Black Flag just tried to ape the look and sound of Elvis or something else that had happened thirty years prior. If they had only worshipped that one singular influence so hard it became like a religion. The original hardcore movement would probably have been pretty irrelevant. So it's a little bit about the whole regressive attitude in some of the hardcore scene...and it's a bit about the opposite end of the spectrum too: the absolutely vapid neo-nu metal mall punk twilight core thing too. This song finds time to hate on a lot within the confines of like a minute and a half or whatever.

Pushing Daisies - This song has been around for a long time-- about six years...well before The Armed as it exists now came to fruition. The old version had completely different lyrics and vocals.

We had started playing it live at shows in the six or so months prior to working on the EP and it seemed to fit really well into our set. We thought it'd fit in perfectly with the material we had been working on and it'd be great to finally get it recorded properly. I had recently become friends with Dave Graw, a guy who was a real inspiration when we were younger...actually when the song had been initially written. He was the singer in a band called Bang Bang which is one of my favorite Detroit bands ever. I asked if he would sing on it because it seemed appropriate. Thankfully, he agreed and wrote a whole new part for it. We're all really really stoked with how it turned out and proud to have been a part of such a cool collaboration.

JOURNEY TO RECEIVE BILLBOARD'S LEGEND OF LIVE AWARD:

Journey will receive the "Legend of Live" award at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards, which are presented by Showclix and are taking place November 10 at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. The awards are part of the Billboard Touring Conference, taking place on the 9th and 10th.
The Billboard "Legend of Live" award honors groups or individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to live music and the touring business, and acknowledges the recipients' commitment to the art of performing live and reaching fans through the concert experience. Previous award recipients include Rush (2010), Ozzy Osbourne (2009), the Allman Brothers Band (2008), pioneering agent Frank Barsalona (2007), Sir Elton John (2006), Cellar Door Concerts founder Jack Boyle (2005) and promoter Michael Cohl (2004).
Journey remains a hugely successful touring band, having moved nearly 1 million tickets and averaging more than $600,000 a night at the box office on this year's "Eclipse" tour, according to Billboard Boxscore.
"I'm so honored to come to New York to represent the band for all the years and dedication that everyone's given," Journey guitarist and founding member Neal Schon says of the honor.
"Though they have sold millions of records and charted a wealth of the most beloved Billboard hits in history, most would agree that Journey's longevity has in large part been driven by their stellar live performances," said Ray Waddell, Billboard's Executive Director of Content and Programming for Touring and Live Entertainment. "From their days blowing up the Bay Area music scene to their ascent to international headlining and, today, iconic rock status, withstanding personnel changes that would bring down a lesser band, Journey's talent transcends musical trends and draws bigger crowds year after year. In short, Journey personifies a 'Legend of Live.'"
The Billboard Touring Awards honor the industry's top artists, venues and professionals for the year, based on actual data compiled through the Billboard Boxscore chart.
This awards reception culminates the two-day Billboard Touring Conference, presented by ShowClix, taking place at Roosevelt Hotel in New York City on November 9-10. The conference unites today's top touring professionals to discuss the current state of the industry. Guided by Ray Waddell, this unique event includes provocative panels, productive roundtables and networking opportunities with touring industry power players and decision makers. Def Leppard Remember Steve Clark
(hennemusic) For long time Def Leppard fans, it's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since the passing of guitarist Steve "Steamin'" Clark. In 1991, while on a six-month leave of absence from the group, Clark died of an overdose of a combination of alcohol and multiple prescription drugs. Steve was gone too soon, dying at the age of 30.

In part 18 of their month-long fan Q&A series, Leppard are asked, "This [year] being the 20th Anniversary of Steve [Clark]'s death, how does his influence still effect the band?"

"It affects us all the time because we think about him every day," begins Joe Elliott. "We play songs, live, that he co-wrote. We hear music that he played when we hear one of our songs on the radio from way back when."

More from Joe, and guitarist Phil Collen here.

40 Years of Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven
(Gibson) How did high school dances end before November 8, 1971? That's the date that Led Zeppelin released a promotional disc to FM rock stations that would become the world's most-played radio hit and cross over to teen-packed auditoriums everywhere.

"Stairway to Heaven" was an unlikely on-air success at eight-minutes long, but in the early '70s, FM DJs still could play the full-length version of "In-A- Gadda-Da-Vida," Iron Butterfly's 17-minute bathroom break anthem. And "Stairway"'s length, plus the song's long, quiet build-up, made it perfect for slow dancing until the explosive finale, which provided an outlet for the hormonal energy that the slow dancing generate.

The song that Gibson Les Paul legend Jimmy Page described as "crystallizing the band" started taking form in 1970 during Page and Robert Plant's famous songwriting vacation in rural Wales at a cottage called Bron-Yr-Aur. Page developed the acoustic opening section there, and Plant wrote the initial verse. By the time the entire band re-grouped at the Headley Grange rehearsal and recording building in East Hampshire, England, Page had several distinct pieces of electric and acoustic music that he felt were related to that initial theme. While Page tried to weave the sections together with drummer John Bonham and bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, Plant sat in a corner, writing. When he stood up and started singing, about 80 percent of the lyrics for "Stairway to Heaven" were complete. more on this story

Van Halen Using Backing Tapes In Concert?
(hennemusic) Sammy Hagar accuses Van Halen of using former bassist Michael Anthony's talents on the road, even after they unceremoniously dismissed him and his contributions to the group and its legacy.

"Those vocal harmonies on the last tour were Mike on tape," asserted Hagar. "Mike should've reamed them for it. Wolfie don't sing like that, and Ed sure as hell don't. Go on the Internet and listen to Ed's voice live from the reunion with me. Hear him sing on 'When It's Love' and some of those songs. Ed can't sing, and his voice is shot if he can, from cigarettes and booze anyway."

Sammy didn't stop there. "I just don't see Van Halen getting together again," said the Red Rocker. "I don't know what would have to happen for it to happen. I don't think they're ever going to get together with Dave. They've been working on that record for a year and a half or whatever, and they keep postponing and postponing it." Sammy Hagar Offers To Manage Reunited Guns N' Roses
(Rock News Desk) When Sammy Hagar first joined Van Halen he found his bandmates were working under poor contracts and renegotiated everyone's deals for them. Now he says he'd like to provide the same services to a reunited Guns N' Roses – if they ever get back together. But he accepts financial issues aren't what's keeping them apart.

"They've proved again and again and again that it ain't money. Axl goes out for a lot less money with his version of Guns N' Roses, and Slash goes out for a lot less money with Velvet Revolver or by himself.

"The amount of money they could make if they got it all back together, made a great record and toured the world would probably be as much as the Rolling Stones," Hagar says. "They could do it. I would manage them – I'd be their manager and make sure they got the right deal from all the promoters. They could be the biggest band in the world if they wanted to." more on this story

Dio Made James Durban A Metal Head
(hennemusic) For the time being, he'll be referred to as the "American Idol rocker," but James Durbin was rocking long before he hit the Idol stage.

"I just remember being a kid, driving around with my mom, and then Dio's 'Holy Diver' came on the radio and it changed everything," Durbin tells Noisecreep. "It was the first time I had ever heard a metal song. I loved it right away. From there, I just wanted to learn as much about music as I could. Eventually, I found the artists that I liked more and stuck with those. I'm talking about Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Motley Crue — you know, the classics."

At some point, James morphed from being a fan to starting a band.

"I've always showed an interest for music of all kinds, so they might have thought that the metal thing was just a phase," he laughs. "When I was a teenager, I even started a metal band called Leviathan. I've always wanted to be a professional musician. Look, metal isn't the kind of music my mom would listen to, but she's always been supportive nonetheless. more on this story

"Ultimately, it makes for a larger sound when you have everyone joining forces rather than someone trying to be the superstar." (Sleaze Roxx) More rock news

With versions by German rapper CASPER, drum and bass act THE QEMISTS and KRISTOF BATHORY, vocalist of the black metal band DAWN OF ASHES, there should be something everyone can enjoy.

Says IN FLAMES vocalist Anders Fridén. "I love collaborations like this and all the artists we worked with have done an awesome job. ZZ Top in Space
We were sent over a link to a video of conversation between ZZ Top's Dusty Hill who dropped by NASA Mission Control in Houston during a break in ZZ Top's tour schedule, to chat with his buddy Astronaut Commander Michael Fossum, now aboard the International Space Station.

Back in April, ZZ Top sent "Flyin' High," a song from the band's forthcoming (as yet untitled) album to Mike while on the launch pad aboard the Soyuz spacecraft and it made it's world wide (universe-wide?) debut during the flight to the ISS.

In the video you'll see Fossum along with Russian cosmonaut Segei Vokov and Satoshi Furukawa of Japan's JAXA space agency who were on the Soyuz flight with Fossum for the "Flyin' High" debut. Dusty's wife "Chuck" (Charlene) and ZZ Top tour manager Pablo Gamboa are also seen and heard chatting with Mike in this clip. The reference to "Aggie" is a reflection of the fact that both Chuck and Mike are Texas A&M alums. Check it out here

Jeff Healey Boxed Set Coming
(Kayos) Eagle Rock will celebrate the life of Jeff Healey (1966-2008) with the November 1 release of Full Circle: The Live Anthology, a boxed set containing three CDs and one DVD.

Three complete concerts, captured in stunning aural clarity (Dolby Digital Stereo) are represented in this incredible set. In 1989, the Jeff Healey Band supported its See The Light debut album by performing at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival. In 1991, the band toured Switzerland appearing at the St. Gallen Open Air Festival (on CD and DVD in this set). In 1995, after achieving international fame, they returned home to Toronto for a rousing hero's welcome in front of a hometown crowd, in support of their Cover To Cover album. more on this story

Singled Out: Acidic's Uninspired
Today Mike Gossard from Acidic tells us about "Uninspired" from their new album "Chronic Satisfaction". Here is the story:

In the grand scheme of things "Uninspired" is more than a track to us. It came out of the biggest period of indecision I've ever encountered in my time as an artist. We were in the middle of an inner battle as to which producer we were going to have put their spin on our album. There was quite a bit of strife built up as far as this issue is concerned just because the creative process is so vitally important to being a band. It was in all this that I realized that I was forgetting the music and had shrugged off many ideas because of the pressure to have a perfect riff. I was approached with this song, "Uninspired." It was an idea in progress that hadn't taken much shape and needed some work. I sat down with it and really analyzed what made it pop. I finished the arrangement and the story of the song is that the message it conveys really hit home with me.

I had just been in the most stressful relationship I've ever been in, and all of the constant mental buffeting had left me with an apathy towards songwriting and a general confusion when trying to construct an arrangement. I was left, literally, "Uninspired" and it took a lot of touring and general self-diagnostics to alleviate that tension. The song is a testament to what can happen if an ongoing mental tragedy is left to habituate and drain away all the creative space in one's consciousness. "Uninspired" isn't just a song. It's a period in my life and it left me with a heightened sense of purpose as an artist as well as having left an indelible impression on my psyche, especially on tour.

Apart from that, every time we play the song live, something crazy always seems to go down, whether it is an unlimited bar tab, or some crazy incident happening in front of the club we're playing in. The song has a very strange magic in it.

Video From Historic Metallica Show Online
(hennemusic) Metallica played their first-ever show in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Tuesday night at Yas Island.

The band were looking forward to playing in the country, as bassist Robert Trujillo told Gulf News. "This is a whole new adventure for us. Within a tour cycle, we usually play for a couple of years, and usually play a lot of the same venues in Europe and the US. This [show] is great, because we have never been to the Emirates, and we've never been to India [where Metallica are heading to after Abu Dhabi]. We know that there are a lot of fans there who have never seen Metallica live before."

"This is where it turns into a gig, adventure and holiday — we have been very busy, so for us to go to a place like the UAE, it becomes an adventure," added Trujillo. "And it makes it all that much more exciting because we get to perform. It's something different, and we love to explore. We have the best job in the world. We're not clocking in a 9-to-5. We do what we love, and we get to see the world. That's really cool." Watch a couple of videos from the show here

Achtung Baby Was Nearly The End For U2
(Gibson) U2's Achtung Baby is now acclaimed as U2's finest achievement, but the 1991 album nearly didn't get made. In fact, its beginnings nearly split the Irish band apart.

By the turn of the '90s, U2 were at a crossroads. They were a major stadium act, but creatively they were faltering. The band had been stung by media criticism of their half studio/half live double album Rattle and Hum. That "toying" with Americana certainly delivered some hits ("Angel Of Harlem," the Bo Diddley-esque "Desire," the B.B. King duet "When Love Comes to Town") but many found the album too much of a pastiche. U2 suddenly became the most loved/hated rock band on the planet. What to do? As Bono told a Dublin crowd in the late '80s: "We have to go away and dream it all up again."

As guitarist The Edge later reflected, the "traditionalism" of Rattle and Hum was the exception in the U2 canon. "My view," he told this author in 1996 "is that Rattle and Hum, for all its traditionalism, is actually our "experimental" record. Achtung Baby got us back to our normality – making dark, very European music with experimental sounds." Famously, U2 decided to impose new rules for Achtung Baby, the band's rebirth. more on this story

The Day Duran Duran Came Undone Again
(Gibson) On this day in 2006, Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor quit the band during the U.S. leg of their world tour. A statement on behalf of the group described the relationship with Andy Taylor as unworkable and one that could not be resolved. Gibson takes a look back: On this day in 2006, the Duran Duran fan club issued the following statement on guitarist Andy quitting the band for a second time.

"The four of us have dissolved our partnership and will be continuing as Duran Duran without Andy, as we have reached a point in our relationship with him where there is an unworkable gulf between us and we can no longer effectively function together," read the letter, signed "Simon, John, Nick and Roger."

It was the second time the Duran Duran guitarist had split from Simon Le Bon and Co. Taylor, who played guitar on the band's first three studio albums in the '80s, originally left Duran Duran after the release of 1986's Notorious. He rejoined the group in 2001, following a spell with '80s supergroup Power Station. more on this story

Real World's Puck Sentenced For Domestic Violence Arrest
(TMZ) Legendary "Real World" troublemaker David "Puck" Rainey needs to learn how to be a better father ... at least according to an L.A. judge -- who sentenced the reality star to parenting classes after his recent domestic violence arrest.

As we previously reported, Puck was busted on suspicion of felony corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant back in June.

It's unclear exactly what happened during the incident, but it's likely his kid was present -- because Puck was charged with child endangerment and contributing to delinquency of minor ... in addition to domestic battery and corporal injury on a spouse.

Puck struck a deal with prosecutors yesterday -- in which two counts, child endangerment and corporal injury on a spouse, were dismissed. In exchange, Puck pled "no contest" to domestic battery and contributing to delinquency of a minor.

The judge sentenced Puck to 4 years probation -- in addition to a 52-week domestic violence counseling program and 52 parenting classes.

If that wasn't bad enough, Puck also has to complete 30 days of reflective orange vest-wearing highway clean-up patrol.

Nada Surf Debut New Song Online
Nada Surf have set a January 24, 2012 release date for their new album, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, and you can hear one of the new tracks right now.

NPR debuted the first track, "When I Was Young," yesterday. Fans can now grab, share and re-post the free download from NPR more.

Unlike all of the other Nada Surf records, Stars was made with a distinct attempt to capture their live sound. "We've always played faster and a little harder live," Caws says, "but we'd play so carefully in the studio. So with this album, we made a conscious decision to preserve what it felt like in the practice room, when you play with that new-song energy. Just embrace it and not worry whether we're overdoing it, kind of get all the thinking out of the way." The tempos are high, but the songs bristle with hooks, breathtaking changes, and Nada Surf's trademark genius bridges. The educated ear will hear the influence of many bands from '60s Brit-pop to post-punk and vintage indie, and yet there is an unmistakable Nada Surf sound: a certain rhythm section groove, introspective chord shapes and the unique emotional weight to Caws's voice, both boyish and very soulful, a combination of wisdom and vulnerability.

We received the following word that a John Lennon comic book is coming this December. Here are the details:

In the pantheon of musical legends, John Lennon is at the top of the mountain, if not the king of the mountain. From his time with the Beatles and his solo projects, he asked the world to ignore borders and divisions, and instead he encouraged the average person to embrace what brings people together. And when his life ended viciously from an assassin's bullet in 1980, the music industry, and the world, lost an advocate for peace, love and true musicality.

Singled Out: Adakain's Sky is Falling
Today Jason Schauer of Adakain tells us about "Sky is Falling" from their new EP "Silhouette Of Lies". Here is the story:

The writing process for our newest EP "Silhouette Of Lies" was substantially different from our previous album. We took ample amount of time to really find the sound that defines us as a band. We practically lived in our rehearsal spot for months on end holding nothing back experimenting with different sounds, melodies, and tones. Riffs came out left and right and we would try to fuse them together as best we could sometimes working sometimes not so much. We wrote about 15 or 20 songs before we decided to take the material to the studio in Knoxville, TN.

The song "Sky Is Falling" was quite a bit different lyrically and melodically before we entered the studio. It just didn't seem to really capture the vision of the song so with us living in an RV park down the road from the studio we pretty much would eat, sleep and write the album. Needless to say the final melody and lyrics got finished in the studio.

"Sky Is Falling" is about the inevitable ending of something great in your life. It could be someone you are in a relationship with or a good friend. The list goes on and that's what I love about this song is that it can be inturpreted in so many different ways. The phrase " Sky is Falling" resembles all of the negative repercussions from the situation falling down on you. This song is definitely one of my favs.
