File-Sharers Buy 30 Percent More Music Than Non-Sharers
File-sharers reportedly buy 30% more music than non-sharers according to a new study which runs counter to the music industry's war on file-sharing claims that it hurts the industry.
Torrent Freak reports that a preview of a new study/poll entitled Copy Culture Survey by the American Assembly, a non-partisan public policy forum affiliated with Columbia University, found some interesting results.
"US P2P users have larger collections than non-P2P users (roughly 37% more). And predictably, most of the difference comes from higher levels of 'downloading for free' and 'copying from friends/family'," American Assembly's Joe Karaganis writes.
"But some of it also comes from significantly higher legal purchases of digital music than their non-P2P using peers–around 30% higher among US P2P users. Our data is quite clear on this point and lines up with numerous other studies: The biggest music pirates are also the biggest spenders on recorded music."
There was also a startling finding about a much bigger source of music piracy than P2P sharing. Read the Torrent Freak report for that and more on this study here.

We put a lot of time and effort into it so that it would be what you're going to see, which is just one show. That's all we did: no warm-up gigs, no follow up. It wasn't designed to be a film at all. People have been asking me about it for the last probably five or 10 years… I'll definitely take a different path than the other guys, the way they put their books together."
Perry says he's been reading other rock biographies and autobiographies ("probably 40"), to get a feel for what works and what doesn't. "I hope this one works," he said. "There's a lot to fit into 600 pages or whatever it's gonna be. I'm pretty excited." more on this story

KISS' Paul Stanley Responds To Aerosmith Insult
(hennemusic) KISS frontman Paul Stanley has responded to negative comments made about his band by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.
During an interview with 102.5 The Bone in Tampa Bay, Florida last week, Tyler was asked about touring with the New York rockers, saying "KISS is a comic-book rock band. They've got a couple of hits, but they're more, they're comic book — you see them in their spackled faces."
Stanley and KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer appeared on Rockline Monday night to promote their newly-released album, "Monster." Host Bob Coburn asked Stanley if he had a response to Tyler's comments. "Maybe Steven's feeling a bit full of himself because he has an album coming out," said Stanley.
Regarding the 2003 co-headlining tour with Aerosmith, Stanley told Coburn, "Steven insisted that they close the show. I really [didn't] care because one way or the other you have to come up onstage. He had a chip on his shoulder back then. [He] was a looking down his nose a bit at KISS. Seeing him come onstage to an underwhelmed audience and [seeing] people walking out [made me smile]." He then issues a bit of a challenge for Aerosmith.
Thin Lizzy Retiring Their Name
(hennemusic) Thin Lizzy are retiring their band name out of respect for the late Phil Lynott. The groupwill not be releasing their new album under the name and will soon stop touring under the legendary moniker.
Last month, Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham confirmed the band will start recording a new album this fall. The project marks the group's first studio album since 1983's "Thunder And Lightning," and its first since the passing of frontman Phil Lynott, who died in 1986.

Iron Maiden Won't Last Another Decade?
Iron Maiden founder Steve Harris expressed doubt that the legendary metal band will still be playing together a decade from now.
Harris spoke to The Quietus about his new solo album, "British Lion" and was asked "Obviously in Iron Maiden you're all really fit, you play football, the gigs themselves are obviously work outs. Is there any reason why you can't keep on doing this for another ten years?"
He responded, "I don't know about ten years but I think we've certainly got another five years in us but it's hard to say. As you get older it gets doubly hard to keep yourself fit and in shape. We do work really hard on doing that. It's important to us. We'd be selling ourselves and everyone else short if we didn't, so we do look after ourselves. It does get tougher. I don't play football much any more but I play a lot of tennis. Partly because I've had so many problems with my back that I can only play the odd match here or there. Unfortunately it's five years since I've played a full season of football and that's something that I miss a lot but I had to make a decision. " The interview covers a lot of ground, check it out here.

Metallica Honored To Replace Green Day
(hennemusic) Metallica have stepped in to replace Green Day at the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience on Saturday, October 27, the second of the three-day event at New Orleans City Park.
Green Day recently ceased all live and promotional appearances in support of their newly-released album "¡Uno!" following a recent onstage meltdown by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong in Las Vegas, which resulted in the singer currently seeking treatment for substance abuse.
"We got a message about two days ago asking us if we're able to fill in for Green Day, because Billie Joe was having some issues," guitarist Kirk Hammett tells Fuse TV. "We discussed it between the four of us and we all said, 'Yeah, it would be great thing for us to do and it would also be great to help out Billie Joe, 'cause he's a friend of ours and we love Green Day. If we can help them out in any way possible, we're always happy to do it, 'cause we love those guys. It's actually an honor for us that they approached us and asked if we can fill in. So we're doing it, and I'm really excited about it." more on this story

Unreleased Dio Material Exists
Classic Rock Revisited caught up with former AC/DC and Dio drummer Simon Wright to discuss last week's release of The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2. During the interview we discover that unreleased Dio material does exist but it comes with a big caveat. Here is that portion of the exchange:
Simon: "Electra" was the last track that we recorded with Ronnie and it was going to be on Magica II and III. I think the plan was that we were going to re-record it. It is on The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2.
There were three, or four, songs that he had been working on for Magica II and III. They were just demos, unfortunately. Wendy is in charge of all that and I am not sure what will happen. At some point, maybe, they will come out. We will have to see what Wendy wants us to do with them.
CRR: It would be tough to do without Ronnie there and only having his voice on tape. Simon: You would have to be careful on how you approached it. You would not want to overstep your bounds. We would have to sit and listen to them and see how far he got with them. We would do it with totally respect and we would have to do it delicately. We will see what happens. It is up to Wendy, as she in charge of that side of things, but we will wait and see. Read the full interview here.

Intronaut Recording New Album
Intronaut are currently working on their fourth full length album, which is tentatively set to be released next spring, and Century Media sent out an update and rehearsal video:
Drums will be recorded by producer John Haddad [Exhumed, Phobia] at Trench Studios, while Derek Donley [Bereft] will be handling recording duties for all other elements. Andrew Schneider [Unsane, Cave In] will be mixing the album and David D'Andrea will be working with the band again on artwork and layout.
Vocalist and guitarist Sacha Dunable comments: "After a year of intense, full-time writing mode, we are elated to begin recording our fourth full length this week. It's a little early to have perspective on how it compares to our past records, but it should be a banger. Expect a wildly technical, emotionally charged, organic sounding record."
Intronaut recently posted a video of a rehearsal, where they're practicing a new song here.

Singled Out: Bezoar
Today Sara Villard from Bezoar tells us about the song "Nikola" from their latest album "Wyt Deth". Here is the story:
This song came into being after Tyler [Villard, guitar] had been reading a bunch of conspiracy theory books, most notable Behold A Pale Horse by William Cooper and a few others about Nikola Tesla.
We had let go of our previous drummer and had some down time to write new material. This spooky song was the best of that period. We used to play it electric with a long psych-jam at the end but that version never blew us away. more on this story

Rolling Stones Planning More Tour Dates
(Gibson) Speculation about The Rolling Stones staging a series of 50th anniversary shows continues to move toward reality.
In a new interview with Q Magazine, Keith Richards says, "We've got some shows in London, I believe, and in New York, but I really can't talk about any of that at the moment. They've put the gag on me on this. You can hint!"
Even more enticing are comments made by longtime Stones sax player Bobby Keys. In a just-published interview with Billboard, Keys said the band was "gonna do some more concerts, starting in November with two in England and then a couple here in the States, then there's a few added concerts after that. Keith told me a couple months ago there was something in the wind and just be ready to go. I'm waiting for them to send me the plane ticket and the information, and then I'll go." more on this story

In a prepared statement, Green Day added: "We were stoked when we found out CSI: NY wanted to use our music instead of dialogue to narrate the first few acts of the episode. It's the first time something like this has been done on the series, and we are blown away with what we've seen." more on this story
Sons of Azrael's Frontman Reportedly Dead At Age 29
Sons of Azrael's frontman Joe Siracuse is reportedly dead at the age of 29, according to a vague post on the band's Facebook page.
The band has not yet issued any details and the news is spreading about Siracuse's death based on a post on the band's Facebook on Tuesday night that simply read, 'Joseph R. Siracuse 1983-2012.'
Again, that posting is the only confirmation that Siracuse has died. If true, this is the second time the band has been hit with tragedy over the past year. Their guitarist Tony Lorenzo was paralyzed from the waist down after he was shot during an armed robbery last October. Link to the band's Facebook.
The Foo Fighters Team With Rick Springfield For New Song

The Who Haunted By Keith Moon and John Entwistle
(Gibson) Pete Townshend appeared Tuesday night (Oct. 9) at Barnes & Noble in New York's Union Square to talk about his new autobiography, Who I Am: A Memoir. At one point, Townshend spoke about the difficulties The Who have faced without Keith Moon and John Entwistle.
"We feel the ghosts of Keith and John," he said. "The second phase of The Who in a sense was really when we started to tour again around the year 2000, 2001. We were still able to evoke the sound, particularly with [drummer] Zak Starkey. Now it's much more difficult even though Zak's there. John's sound was very big and rich and organic. When John died, there was a hole in the sound onstage and I was able to grow into that and find space. And I have to say as a guitar player, I prefer working without John. But as a member of The Who creating the incredible, powerful, driving, visceral sound, he's gone. I can't really do that again."
Townshend also said he's put production duties for the upcoming Quadrophenia tour into the hands of Roger Daltrey. "He's working on a new dramatic scenario for it," Townshend said, "working on a new video, trying to find a way to be comfortable being the narrator." more on this story

Singled Out: bellylove
Today bellylove guitarist Lisa Black tells us the humorous story behind the title track from their new album release, "Circles and Darkness". Here is the story:
Circles and Darkness is a song written in the key of B minor, just two half steps below what Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel calls the "saddest of all keys". The song is haunting and sticks in your mind for days after hearing it.
Of all the original songs we play live, Circles and Darkness is the most fun for me because it journeys from reggae to riff rock, from Jamaica to Sunset Blvd in less than 3 minutes.
The song's title was inspired by a trip to Disneyland, the "happiest place on earth" which is ironic, given it's key and all, while on the ride "Space Mountain" a really dark, indoor roller coaster that goes around in circles, really fast.
The lyrics were inspired by the adventures of Harry Potter, the drums by Neil Pert, the guitar by Foghat and the bass by Geddy Lee. It's available for download on cdbaby, iTunes and Amazon, check it out, "your' gonna like the way you feel".
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album (and be sure to check out their "I'm too old for American Idol" video) right here!

Steely Dan's Fagen and Becker InTheStudio For Aja Anniversary

October 1977 Aja would be Steely Dan's highest charting album (peaking at # 3 on U.S. charts) and their first platinum seller, eventually selling over 3 million copies within a year of release. Coming in at an impressive #145 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time, Aja introduced a generation to the jazz fusion movement that was gaining momentum and now had found its commercial ticket.
Donald Fagen tells 'InTheStudio' host Redbeard how Aja was a move into a new direction for Steely Dan. "To some degree we wanted to get back to more complex harmony and go back to some of the jazz harmony we'd grown up with . . There was also some interesting things happening in what they call fusion, it was the beginning of the fusion era between musicians who seemed to be successfully adapting some of the technics of blues and Rock to Jazz and vice versa.

Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant lost his patience with a mainstream wire service reporter during a press conference in New York yesterday.
The band held the event to promote the release of their new 'Celebration Day' reunion DVD but things took a wrong turn when a Associated Press reporter asked about the DVD possibly leading to something else from the group, Rolling Stone.
When asked if they were thinking about something "bigger" Plant responded, "We've been thinking about all sorts of things and then we can't remember what we were thinking of – schmuck."
RS reports that Plant took another shot at the press. "There are some people in here who are not journalists," he said early on. "There's a masseuse in here who's not a journalist. I think that's ever so exciting." RS reports that was met with "uncomfortable laughter."
Plant later discussed the issue of focusing on the reunion captured on the new DVD and not on the band trying to pull off a reunion tour, "We were so happy we were getting it right and taking it beyond what we thought we were about that night," he said of the O2 gig. "There were moments where we took off ... But the responsibility of doing that four nights a week for the rest of time is a different thing. We're pretty good at what we do but the tail should never wag the dog, really. If we're capable of doing something, in our own time, that will be what will happen. So any inane questions from people who are from syndicated outlets, you should just really think about what it takes to answer a question like that in one second. We know what we've got, you know." "[Axl Rose] has tons of stuff done [and] recorded that he's played for me and wants my input on," Ashba tells Rolling Stone and he discussed how the upcoming Vegas residency may produce new music."This is the first time we're all gonna be in the same place for a month solid and that will be, and already has been talked about, our main focus. So I think we're gonna get a lot of done," he says. "There's a lot of stuff recorded and I think it's just a matter of sitting down and working together as a band, putting together what we feel is gonna be the next best Guns N' Roses record. And I can't wait; I'm so excited to dive even deeper into that." more on this story

At that point his bandmates left the stage and he proceeded to play solo, apologizing and calling the performance "f**king embarrasing." Lambgoat has video of the incident as well as the band's apology video here.

KISS' Paul Stanley Predicts Analog Revival
KISS founder Paul Stanley spoke with Rolling Stone about the band's new album, Monster, and he discussed their return to analog recording for the effort and how he expects other artists to join KISS and Foo Fighters in returning to the medium.
He tells the magazine: "I have nothing against technology. When technology trumps emotion and feel, when somebody will tell you something is good by looking at a computer screen rather than seeing if they're sweatin' or tapping their foot, I'm out of there. We recorded analog and we sat around with our amps next to us. It was great. It's always exciting when you're doing something without any input from outside sources. Nobody heard the album until it was done. I wasn't interested in what anybody else thought. There were three other guys in the room whose opinions I valued, and that was it.
When asked if expected others to return to analog, he responded: "Yeah, when it becomes clear that people have strayed from what the essence of what we're doing. As a matter of fact, I was talking to Dave Grohl this morning when we dropped our kids off at school. He's doing a documentary [about the studio Sound City], on the great history of it. The music and the people it inspired were recorded on tape. They didn't have pedal boards where you push a button on the right and it gives you cappuccino. Gear that looks like Star Trek isn't what any of our heroes played on. If you can't get a great sound with your guitar plugged into an amp, you need a new guitar or a new amp." Free Guitarist Paul Kossoff Committed Slow Suicide
(Classic Rock) Free guitarist Paul Kossoff committed a slow suicide as a result of not being able to deal with his acclaim, says bandmate Andy Fraser.
The bassist recalls the harrowing moment he and a Free roadie tried to kidnap Kossoff in an attempt to get him off drugs after the band had split up. Realising he wasn't going to accept their help, the pair were left with no option but to let him continue with his lifestyle choice – and that was the point at which Fraser bade his former colleague goodbye.
Kossoff continued his downward spiral after Free's final split in 1973, and died in 1976 aged 25 while preparing for a tour with his band Back Street Crawler.
Fraser's story is a Classic Rock exclusive excerpt from his book All Right Now: Life, Death and Life Again. Check it out.

"Linda - if you don't care what I say - shut up! - let Paul write - or whatever... I'm not ashamed of the Beatles - (I did start it all) - but of some of the s**t we took to make them so big - I thought we all felt that way in varying degrees - obviously not. Singled Out: David Ralston
Today blues rocker David Ralston tells us about the title track from his latest album "I Don't Care". Here is the story:
This song started out as a rant about things that me and co-writer Kim Middleton got sick of hearing from people, especially girls. So we started listing out all of the stuff we heard from co-workers, friends, family, and chicks that attended shows. We laughed so hard at some of the nonsensical things that people actually care about. Particularly at the type of stuff and things people obsess over such as: Ugg boots, boyfriends bands, drugs of choice, why they are fat, their money, wanting breast implants etc. Then we were like this would be a great idea for a song because you know there are more people who feel exactly the same and the content is certainly universal.
It was at first meant to be kind of a joke but it has taken on its own life and kind of an anthem to some. "I don't care" is powerful statement if you really mean it!! By far the most popular song on this album-probably thanks to the video as well!

Anubis Gate Lineup Change
Anubis Gate have announced a lineup change with guitarist Jesper M Jensen leaving the group and being replaced by Third Eye's Michael Bodin. We were sent the following details:
Anubis Gate commented on former guitarist Jesper leaving the band: Jespers decision to leave the band to pursue other musical interests has been some time in the making, actually Jesper announced his leaving to the band 3 months ago, leaving us with good time to the difficult task of finding the right replacement. We feel it's important for everybody to know that Jespers exit has nothing to do with personal differences, in fact we are still the best of friends. Jesper simply found that now was the right time to try something new. We are of course sad that he is leaving but respect his decision and wish him nothing but the best.
We are happy to announce Michael Bodin as Jespers replacement. We know Michael from his works with Third Eye and nineties progmetal band Northern Empire. He is a fantastic player who can contribute with very interesting material, in fact he is already writing great new stuff for the new album which we expect out late 2013. We are looking very much forward to presenting the new lineup for you both on stage and on record.

Singled Out: Seven Kingdoms
Today Seven Kingdoms guitarist Camden Cruz tells us about "After The Fall" from their brand new album "The Fire is Mine," which was released today. Here is the story:
When a band writes a song, 9 times out of 10 you have to figure out the tempo. Here at Seven Kingdoms we are always quality control checking to make sure a song is as fast as it can be without being "to fast" to not get the groove. After The Fall was recorded at 156 BPM on our record. Originally we had the song 'bumped up' as our drummer would call it, to 158 BPM; just because we had a song on the last record that was the same speed. We liked it just slightly faster and you really couldn't tell a difference - but it was there - just the simple fact that you know its faster! haha
So in February of this year we shot the video (yes, before we went to the studio) with the demo version playing as a time signature. The Demo was recorded at 156 BPM. And we didn't think anything of it. You could imagine our realization when we got to Morrisound that we had to slow the song down because we shot the video first. Low and behold, You would never have known and no one but us would probably ever be able to tell, but this is our incredible journey in search for two beats per minute. We're shooting the video after the record is recorded next time!
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

That statement seemed like a contradiction: but while the song is new, it has elements that would be familiar to fans of The Clash, a band that Dylan has long cited as an influence (Clash guitarist Mick Jones plays on the studio version).
