I think they're one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world."

"I could see how Steven loves Steven and he always wants the spotlight over him — he's always, 'Look at me. Look at me.' And that's OK, 'cause I had one of those in my band," Criss continued. Read the rest here.

Singled Out: Vajra
Annamaria Pinna from Vajra tells us about "Inside The Flame" from the new album, "Pleroma," which features Blake Fleming (ex-The Mars Volta), Doug Wright (Dirty Pearls) and Will Dahl (ex-Harley's War). Here is the story:

I thought this song was going to be the simplest song on the album, and it turned out to be the most complicated. It was like meditating a mandala, circling around and around, going deeper and deeper into a vortex to reveal the song's truth.

I started writing this song during Diwali in my bedroom in India (mainly because it was the only room in the apartment that had a/c). At times isolated and lonely, I started thinking about my past relationships and how everything seems to go so well at the beginning and then slowly disintegrates - that the image that your partner portrays at the beginning of a relationship isn't necessarily who he really is and that the real person emerges in time.

Sonically, I wanted to explore the struggle of maintaining one's identity in a relationship while giving and relating to one's partner (in other words, looking at the layers of each partner and also looking at the layers of the relationship between the two of them) while also exploring the slow disintegration of a relationship.

The song started off as an experimentation of a moody, atmospheric lullaby of layered synth sounds and a simple bassline. For some reason (and this doesn't usually happen) most of the lyrics and the main vocal melody came quickly. I wasn't happy with the monotony of the song, and so I started to work on the arrangement. I added a loose drum beat, an overlay of tablas, and a flute outro to the chorus. I wanted to convey the chaos of a fire and the calm aftermath of the burning, so I worked more on the second chorus and a breakdown of disjointed chaos leading to an unsettling calm and finally, a transformative final chorus. When I returned to the States, I sat down with Blake (Fleming) and we fleshed out the simple drum parts that were there, which added another layer of intensity to the song. After that was done, Doug (Wright) and I did the same thing with the basslines and then Will (Dahl) and I worked on the guitar parts. After all this was done, I revisited the vocal melodies until I felt they were right. I experimented with my vocal tone in the verses and choruses and tried to emotionally parallel that of the life of the relationship and its disintegration and transformation. With the verses, especially, I wanted to affect a soft, gentle siren with a hint of something darker below the surface, which is realized in the formidable chorus. In the end, I suppose the song is kind of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, a paradoxical yin yang of emotions. We just hope that the listener will feel something.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

New Van Halen Book Released
(hennemusic) A new Van Halen book is on the market. "Van Halen: Exuberant California, Zen Rock 'N' Roll" is written by John Scanlan, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University.

A book description states: "I hate the word maturing", singer David Lee Roth once said. "I don't like the word evolving – or any of that bullsh*t. The point is to keep it as simplistic, as unassuming, and as stupid as possible."

Examining Roth's sentiment, "Van Halen: Exuberant California, Zen Rock 'N' Roll" follows the band's pursuit of the art of artlessness, and describes how they characterize what historian Kevin Starr terms 'Zen California' – a state of mind and way of being that above all celebrates 'the now'. In rock'n' roll terms it stands for the unregulated expenditure of energy; for a youthful exuberance that seems destined to extinguish itself." more on this story

Thin Lizzy Add Belfast Date To Farewell Tour
(hennemusic) Thin Lizzy have added a Belfast concert date to their fall farewell tour due to high demand from fans. The band will play The Limelight in Belfast on December 12.

Last month, Thin Lizzy announced the group will start recording a new album this fall, to be released under a new name, and that they will cease touring under the Thin Lizzy brand after going out on one last trek this fall.

"Out of respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy he created, we have decided that we should not release a new album under the Thin Lizzy name," said guitarist Scott Gorham. "It was a very difficult decision as we put a lot of time and effort into re-building the Thin Lizzy brand over recent years. Releasing a new album was the only way to continue this success. We all know how much Phil meant to this band and the fans. We have written 20 songs that we all feel very strongly do the band and Thin Lizzy name credit. We believe Phil would have been proud of them. We always knew a new record was a touchy subject with some people and, as such, really want the quality of these songs to be heard by everyone without any judgment or prejudice. To that end, we have decided not to release these songs under the name Thin Lizzy. We want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement over the years and to all our fans. We will release this material soon and you will be hearing some great new music with the classic Thin Lizzy sound intact. We will announce future plans early in the New Year." more on this story

Singled Out: Abiotic
Today Abiotic vocalist Ray Jimenez tells us about the song "To Burgeon and Languish" from their brand new album "Symbiosis," which hits stores today. Here is the story:

This is our debut album with Metal Blade Records, and we are very excited to finally share some of our new material with our fans.

I would say that, musically and lyrically, TBAL is one of our shorter and more straightforward songs. I had a great time in the studio recording vocals for this song because I really got to experiment with my vocal range. This song is a bit different from what we have done in the past. I don't want to speak for the rest of the guys, but I think we are all pleased with how it turned out.

Lyrically, TBAL conveys how change is the only thing that is permanent in life. My dad worked in hospice care for some time, treating terminally ill patients. In many of my dad's sessions with his patients, they would express to him that they had a great fear of dying. These individuals' circumstances pushed me to reflect on our inability to cope with how frail we are, and this gave me most of the inspiration I had to write this song. When human beings face difficulty accepting their mortality, they are sometimes forced to find alternatives to immortalize themselves. Some seek to do so with physical achievements, while others attempt to do it with their thoughts and ideas. Future generations will then be influenced by those before them, and they will continue to build upon the patterns and paradigms of the past.

Ozzy, Rolling Stones, AC/DC Score Top Riffs of the 80s
(Gibson) Gibson has selected their picks for the top guitar riffs of the 80s. Here are their top 3 picks:

3. Ozzy Osbourne (featuring Randy Rhoads), "Crazy Train": In the 1980s, you couldn't throw a dead cat in a music store without hitting some kid playing this Randy Rhoads warhorse. The churning, sinister opening section hurls the song forward and creates a momentum that never lets up, even as Ozzy takes it off the rails.

2. The Rolling Stones, "Start Me Up": Twelve years after "Honky Tonk Women," Keith Richards could still conjure an open-tuned gem like no one else. This 1981 classic is so stirring that nearly 30 years later you're still unlikely see a football stadium not use it to psych their fans up for a kickoff.

1. AC/DC, "Back in Black": Perhaps the greatest riff-oriented album of all time is the band's 1980 farewell to dearly departed singer Bon Scott. Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young cooked up some of the greatest riffs of their career on this magnum opus (including "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Hell's Bells" and "Have a Drink on Me"), but none is more memorable than the hard and heavy title track. See the full top 10 and read the readers complaints over omissions here.

Soulfly Member Retiring From Music
Soulfly drummer David Kinkade has decided to retire from music after a career which saw him also play with Borknagar, Arsis and Malevolent Creation.

Kinkade will play a final concert with Soulfly next Tuesday, October 23 at the Hollywood Awards in Bangkok, Thailand, according to Metal Nation

They report that he informed fans of the reason for his decision via a series of Facebook postings which read in part: "I decided two months ago that music is no longer worth the effort to me anymore. After this, I'm going to retire from drumming and music all together and focus on my family rather than myself.

"I've fought my hardest for 'my dream' in music over the past 10 years and failed. [Playing with Borknagar in] Norway was the pinnacle of mistakes and I'll never let myself off the hook for it. I moved across the world for music, spent hundreds of thousands of $$$ and in the end I ended up digging myself into a deeper hole than before. I'm still trying to recover from that f**k-up.

"The only bit of light that my career ever saw was in the end, I was able to make a record and play some huge shows with a guy [Soulfly/ex-Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera] whose music I grew up idolizing. Thats good enough for me." You can read the rest of his statement here.

Carradine Narrates Neil Young
(Gibson) Neil Young's memoir Waging Heavy Peace is already acclaimed. An audiobook version is out also, read by actor Keith Carradine, brother of David and part of the Carradine acting dynasty. Carradine may seem an odd choice to some, but he's long been a musician himself. In 1975, he performed his own song "I'm Easy" in the movie Nashville – it won a Golden Globe and an Oscar.

Rolling Stone says, "Waging Heavy Peace isn't a traditional rock memoir. Written throughout 2011, it addresses everything from the recent Crazy Horse reunion back to the formation of Buffalo Springfield – but it's presented in a completely non-linear way. Young also stops the narrative from time to time to complain about the audio quality of MP3s and go into detail about his on-going electric car project. The end result is a glimpse right into Young's brain." Listen to Keith Carradine reading Neil Young

File-Sharers Buy 30 Percent More Music Than Non-Sharers
File-sharers reportedly buy 30% more music than non-sharers according to a new study which runs counter to the music industry's war on file-sharing claims that it hurts the industry.

Torrent Freak reports that a preview of a new study/poll entitled Copy Culture Survey by the American Assembly, a non-partisan public policy forum affiliated with Columbia University, found some interesting results.

"US P2P users have larger collections than non-P2P users (roughly 37% more). And predictably, most of the difference comes from higher levels of 'downloading for free' and 'copying from friends/family'," American Assembly's Joe Karaganis writes.

"But some of it also comes from significantly higher legal purchases of digital music than their non-P2P using peers–around 30% higher among US P2P users. Our data is quite clear on this point and lines up with numerous other studies: The biggest music pirates are also the biggest spenders on recorded music."

There was also a startling finding about a much bigger source of music piracy than P2P sharing. Read the Torrent Freak report for that and more on this study here.

KISS' Paul Stanley Responds To Aerosmith Insult
(hennemusic) KISS frontman Paul Stanley has responded to negative comments made about his band by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

During an interview with 102.5 The Bone in Tampa Bay, Florida last week, Tyler was asked about touring with the New York rockers, saying "KISS is a comic-book rock band. They've got a couple of hits, but they're more, they're comic book — you see them in their spackled faces."

Stanley and KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer appeared on Rockline Monday night to promote their newly-released album, "Monster." Host Bob Coburn asked Stanley if he had a response to Tyler's comments. "Maybe Steven's feeling a bit full of himself because he has an album coming out," said Stanley.

Regarding the 2003 co-headlining tour with Aerosmith, Stanley told Coburn, "Steven insisted that they close the show. I really [didn't] care because one way or the other you have to come up onstage. He had a chip on his shoulder back then. [He] was a looking down his nose a bit at KISS. Seeing him come onstage to an underwhelmed audience and [seeing] people walking out [made me smile]." He then issues a bit of a challenge for Aerosmith.

Thin Lizzy Retiring Their Name
(hennemusic) Thin Lizzy are retiring their band name out of respect for the late Phil Lynott. The groupwill not be releasing their new album under the name and will soon stop touring under the legendary moniker.

Last month, Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham confirmed the band will start recording a new album this fall. The project marks the group's first studio album since 1983's "Thunder And Lightning," and its first since the passing of frontman Phil Lynott, who died in 1986.

The current line-up features Lizzy veterans Gorham, Brian Downey and Darren Wharton, with Ricky Warwick on vocals, ex-Whitesnake man Marco Mendoza on bass and former Alice Cooper guitarist Damon Johnson.

"We don't really know yet 'cause we're not in the world of Fleetwood Mac yet." Iron Maiden Won't Last Another Decade?
Iron Maiden founder Steve Harris expressed doubt that the legendary metal band will still be playing together a decade from now.

Harris spoke to The Quietus about his new solo album, "British Lion" and was asked "Obviously in Iron Maiden you're all really fit, you play football, the gigs themselves are obviously work outs. Is there any reason why you can't keep on doing this for another ten years?"

He responded, "I don't know about ten years but I think we've certainly got another five years in us but it's hard to say. As you get older it gets doubly hard to keep yourself fit and in shape. We do work really hard on doing that. It's important to us. We'd be selling ourselves and everyone else short if we didn't, so we do look after ourselves. It does get tougher. I don't play football much any more but I play a lot of tennis. Partly because I've had so many problems with my back that I can only play the odd match here or there. Unfortunately it's five years since I've played a full season of football and that's something that I miss a lot but I had to make a decision. " The interview covers a lot of ground, check it out here.

Talking sh*t when I was drunk and causing internal conflicts. Today is the day that I can finally be a man and step up and say I'm sorry.

"The rants are done. And were really embarrassing. I think the guys in the band were actually looking out,I really needed a wake up call. So to finally come clean is really hard but the weight of the world on my shoulders is even harder to carry around. I'm in a great place now and want to thank everyone who had my back through the dark times. So to all the fans and the band. I really was fkd up for a while. I'm sorry. Unreleased Dio Material Exists
Classic Rock Revisited caught up with former AC/DC and Dio drummer Simon Wright to discuss last week's release of The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2. During the interview we discover that unreleased Dio material does exist but it comes with a big caveat. Here is that portion of the exchange:

Simon: "Electra" was the last track that we recorded with Ronnie and it was going to be on Magica II and III. I think the plan was that we were going to re-record it. It is on The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2.

There were three, or four, songs that he had been working on for Magica II and III. They were just demos, unfortunately. Wendy is in charge of all that and I am not sure what will happen. At some point, maybe, they will come out. We will have to see what Wendy wants us to do with them.

CRR: It would be tough to do without Ronnie there and only having his voice on tape. Simon: You would have to be careful on how you approached it. You would not want to overstep your bounds. We would have to sit and listen to them and see how far he got with them. We would do it with totally respect and we would have to do it delicately. We will see what happens. It is up to Wendy, as she in charge of that side of things, but we will wait and see. Read the full interview here.
