Today's Day In Rock

Nickelback Conspiracy?
(hennemusic) The Nickelback issues at the NFL game in Detroit rock city this past week turned out to be a non-issue, as the band forged ahead with its NFL halftime show at the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving game.
An alleged Lions fan started a petition to ask the Lions to change the halftime entertainment, which made headlines across the country.

Turns out the guy who initiated the petition had an ulterior motive: to find a way to get his friend to play the gig, Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger told the CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos. "There is an individual, who is a local artist," Chad explains. "'Artist' wanted to play the halftime show. So the guy who started the petition has something to do with [this Artist], and thought to himself, 'how do I get my buddy to be able to play the halftime show. I will start a petition.'" more on this story

Rolling Stones Stars Discussing 50th Anniversary Options
The Rolling Stones may be celebrating their historic 50th anniversary after all. Rolling Stone magazine has learned from a top tour-industry source that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will meet next month to discuss their options.

The report carried these quotes from Richards and Jagger: "I don't see why in the world the Stones can't put together some kind of show next year," says Richards according to the report. "I'd almost count on it. It doesn't have to be the whole spectacle bulls**t again, but we've got to find our own way through this."

"It is quite amazing when you think about it," Jagger adds. "Anything's possible." Read Rolling Stone's detailed article for a lot more here.

David Bowie Camp Shoot Down Musical Reports
The UK press exploded this weekend with the big news that a new David Bowie musical based on the iconic singer's best known song characters, including Major Tom, was set to premiere in March at the IndigO2.

The Guardian ran a detail report which included discussion of how shocked the show's organizers were to obtain permission from Bowie to stage the musical (read that report here.

However, MSO sent out this statement on Sunday from the David Bowie Organization: ""Neither the David Bowie Organization, nor its co-publishers EMI Music and Chrysalis, has issued a license for a Bowie musical at the O2, as has been reported in the U.K. There are no negotiations pending for a long-running musical featuring the music of Mr. Bowie."

We will have to wait and see how this one shakes out.

Gotthard Name Their New Singer
(Gibson) Gotthard have named Swiss-born multi-instrumentalist Nic Maeder as the successor to singer Steve Lee, who died in a motorcycle accident last year.

Maeder grew up dividing his time between Switzerland and Melbourne, Australia. The band began their singer search nine months ago, sifting through applications from all over the world. "Nic not only has a great voice and is a fantastic musician, but we also have a great person in our midst," guitarist Leo Leoni said. "We can rock again at last."

Drummer Hena Habegger said, "The search took a long time but it was clear to all of us when we met Nic that he was the right guy. With him we can enjoy the music again and celebrate new success. I'm really happy that we are continuing." more on this story

Sublime with Rome Deny Break Up After On Stage Drama
(TMZ) Sublime with Rome is NOT calling it quits, despite an on-stage blow up at a concert in Hawaii earlier this week ... TMZ has learned.

Fans were shocked when drummer Bud Gaugh stormed off the stage in Maui on Nov. 20 -- after hurling profanities at the band's manager, Mike "Cheez" Brown.

TMZ spoke with Cheez ... who tells us the drama began when he grabbed his guitar to play a song with the band at the end of the show, as he's often known to do.

But this time, Cheez says, Bud had an issue with the performance -- and screamed at Cheez to get off the stage. Bud then got the crowd to chant, "Go home Cheez."

Cheez, surprised by Bud's reaction, remained on the stage -- but Bud stormed off. The band, stunned by the outburst, completed the show without the drummer.

Now, sources close to the band tell TMZ ... the guys have buried the hatchet -- after laughing about the incident the following day.

As for Cheez, dude tells us he plans to stay off the stage for a while ... until Bud gives him the all-clear to play with the group again. more on this story

Diversity Key To Mastodon's Appeal
(Banana 101.5) Mastodon are one of the few heavy music bands who can go from playing hard-hitting metal festivals, such as Ozzfest, to indie-flavored festivals, like Pitchfork.

What is it about the guys that draws such an assorted audience? According to singer and bass player Troy Sanders, that diversity has a lot to do with the band's random musical tastes.

"I think it stems from the four of us our in the band, our musical tastes and inspirations vary across the entire spectrum of musical history," he told Loudwire. "The four of us are heavily influenced by and love classical music, the whole spectrum of music across the past 300 years. So when it comes to songwriting, anything goes in our band, we don't feel like it's gotta sound like classic Mastodon or else we aren't going to write it. None of that ever comes into play." more on this story

Judas Priest Slowing Down Not Giving Up
(Gibson) Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford says the U.K. metal band's so-called "farewell tour" does not mean they won't play together again. In an interview with Creative Loafing, Halford says the band is not retiring.

"Is there another word besides 'farewell'? You can't say 'retired' because we're not retiring, and you can't really call it the 'you are slowing down a bit tour.' You've gotta give it a little bit of something.

"We thought long and hard and 'farewell' is really the way you can describe this particular world tour because we're not going to do all these big world tours anymore. They've just become too difficult in many, many ways." more on this story

Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson Has High Flying Hopes For Airline
(Gibson) Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson will soon be piloting again, the veteran rocker promises. As reported last week (Nov. 22), Dickinson's employer, the British airline Astraeus, has been ordered to cease operations.

Speaking to Blabbermouth, Dickinson said he plans to either revive Astraeus or start an airline company of his own. "I'm amused that the less well-informed seem to be portraying me as having to resort to busking on the streets following the closure of Astraeus," Dickinson said. "The more astute members of my circle are aware there's rather more going on in my world. I'm already working on a plan to try to save Astraeus, or at least create a new business with new jobs for my friends and former colleagues at Astraeus. This is a serious plan involving people who are very good at their jobs."

The singer went on to express hopes of starting another company that assists in the training of commercial airline pilots.

Slipknot Taylor slams Mega-Producer Rick Rubin

November 23, 2011

Corey describes fury after experience with producer Rick, calling him “overrated, overpaid, and I will never work with him again”

Never again: Taylor and Rubin
Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor has slammed Rick Rubin as “overrated” and “overpaid” and says he’ll never work with the producer again.

They collaborated on Slipknot’s 2004 album Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) and although other members of the band have said it was a good experience, Taylor had always been more cautious in his comments.

Speaking at a question-answer session with fans in Texas on Friday, the singer finally let loose his full feelings on the subject of Rubin, known for his work with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer, Metallica and the upcoming Black Sabbath reunion album.

Taylor said: “There are some people who would love for me to toe the party line, which is basically, ‘Working with Rick Rubin was a very enriching experience.’

“Let me give you the fucking truth of it: Rick Rubin showed up for 45 minutes a week. Rick Rubin would then, during that 45 minutes, lay on a couch and have a mic brought in next to face so he wouldn’t have to move.

“Then he would be like, ‘Play it for me,’ The engineer would play it. And he had shades on the whole time, never mind the fact there was no sun in the room. You just look like an asshole at that point.

“He would stroke his huge beard and try and get as much food out of it as he could. He would go, ‘Play it again,’ then he’d be like, ‘Stop – do that over.’

“He had an assistant who was seven feet tall. He basically ran Rick Rubin’s life. About half way through our precious 45 minutes he would bring in this plate of shit – I assume it was food. It was bluish green and smelled like someone had just plunged a fucking toilet somewhere. He would eat it as fast as he could, just get it in there, all over himself. Which, when you’re working, is so wonderful to look at.”

Taylor said he still respects the producer’s body of past work but added: “The Rick Rubin of today is a thin, thin, thin shadow of the Rick Rubin that he was. He is overrated, he is overpaid, and I will never work with him again as long as I fucking live.”

RIOT Guitarist Hopes Reunited 'Thundersteel' Lineup Can Stay Together 'For Years To Come'

Nov. 24, 2011
Powerline magazine recently conducted an interview with Mark Reale, guitarist for the legendary U.S. metal band RIOT. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Powerline: I thought "Thundersteel" was a remarkable comeback album when it came out in 1988. The same can be said for this new album, "Immortal Soul", too …no?

Mark Reale: "Immortal Soul" is basically the follow-up to "Thundersteel" (1998) and "Privilege Of Power" (1990) 20 years later. The sound of the "Thundersteel" lineup is so identifiable and the songs on the new CD have the same feel and sound but with more of a modern power metal twist. This lineup's writing and performing skills have the same kind of magic we had back when we recorded the "Thundersteel" album. I couldn't have asked for more. This CD is definitely a great comeback for us, and everyone gave it their all and brought their "A" game on "Immortal Soul". I'm very proud of the way it came out. The guys did an amazing job and Bruno Ravel did a great mix and production job.

Powerline: Since "Thundersteel" the band has moved into more of a power metal style. How did this evolution occur? Was it at first due to Tony Moore's style of singing?

Reale: The "Thundersteel" lineup had a certain kind of formula for writing songs and a sound that people loved. Don [Van Stavern, bass] was responsible for a lot of the changes of the sound of RIOT during that period because of his background in heavy metal. He wrote most of the songs on "Thundersteel" and you will hear some of his recognizable style on "Immortal Soul". Everybody participated in the writing on this CD. Mike [Flyntz, guitar] did a lot of excellent writing and lead playing and Bobby [Jarzombek], of course, did his usual awesome drumming and Tony outdid himself lyrically and vocally on this effort. I pretty much took a producer standpoint for a lot of this. I am very proud of these guys and could definitely not have done it without them.

Powerline: How did Tony Moore come back to the band? Why did he leave in the first place?

Reale: When the "Thundersteel" lineup broke up over 20-some-odd years ago, Don left first due to managerial conflicts, shortly followed by Tony. We kept the lineup going with the remaining members. During that period, Don continued on in various projects, touring and recording, whereas Tony kind of left the scene and was doing stuff on a more grounded level. So I think after 20 years of that, and a home life, and then getting thrown back into the fire, it was a little overwhelming at that time for him. We all didn't know how this was going to turn out. But it ended up going from reunion shows to an overwhelming outcry for permanence. He had to step back and re-evaluate his stance during this period. I think he just needed time for this to sink in and that there was such a demand for the group. He had to arrange his personal life's schedule to give it some priority that it was requiring. He also was seeing the people commenting on him singing, everyone wanted a new CD with him on it. After his short departure, we had a band pow-wow and we decided to give it a shot again. Tony's vocals are a big part of this sound and we were exciting to have him back. You will hear on "Immortal Soul" how lucky we are to have him back. The vocals sound better than 20 years ago! It's amazing. Hell, the whole band blows me away. Hopefully we can keep this unit together for years to come, God willing.

Powerline: How is Moore after his emergency surgery? How will it affect his vocal range?

Reale: Tony had emergency oral surgery about three weeks ago and is still recuperating, but is in good spirits and doing well so we should be back up and running within a couple months. We were really bummed that we had to cancel (shows) but (it was) something we had to do for Tony. He had an infection in his jaw bone that required a bone graft which complicated the use of the mouth, and as you know, he needs to be 100% to sing this new stuff. His doctor said he will be fine and able to sing normal again, which is amazing, because his vocals still sound great after all these years. I can't apologize enough to the fans;, we were as disappointed as they were. Actually, we are looking into re-booking a European tour at the top of next year, so it's just kind of just postponed.

Powerline: RIOT thrives onstage … What will the tour to support this album be like?

Reale: The cool thing about RIOT is that we have never relied on a giant stage production or gimmicks. We've always been about the music and performance. Joe Perry said it best when he stated, "Let the music do the talking." You will see five awesome musicians doing what they love which is playing from the heart and that are passionate about the live delivery. I can tell you it will be loud and fast with lots of Marshalls. These guys are top-notch players and am very confident every time I hit the stage with them. You will leave satisfied. We will play a few songs from each album, even some very early stuff that we haven't played in awhile.

KISS Remembers Eric Carr’s Passing, 20 Years Ago

KISS‘ official web site, KissOnline.com, has been updated with the following message:

“Twenty years ago today, our friend Eric Carr passed away after losing his battle with cancer. Over the eleven years Eric spent with KISS, he played over 800 concerts to millions of fans around the world, and he brought joy to and touched the lives of so many people. Here are some thoughts and memories that the band would like to share.”

Paul Stanley (guitar, vocals): “At a time when KISS was in the midst of upheaval and turmoil, Eric brought calm and an optimism that refocused our priorities so we could move forward. I can’t overstate his contribution to our rebirth. His dedication to his music was only matched by his dedication to his fans. He was a kind soul who couldn’t say an unkind word about anyone and I think of him all the time.”

Eric Singer (drums): “Eric Carr was a beloved member of KISS for eleven years. His drumming was as powerful as his love and devotion for the fans and remains in the hearts of many to this day…”

Tommy Thayer (guitar): “Eric Carr was a special person and a friend. He would always go out of his way to be friendly and say something nice. I remember the band was mixing ‘Hot In The Shade’ back in 1989 at Cherokee Studios in L.A. ‘Hot In The Shade’ was a mish-mash of sorts and everyone was throwing in their two cents on the mix — you know, ‘Turn up the guitars, turn up the bass…’ I was listening and remember saying to the engineer, ‘Where’s the drums?’ At the end of the night, Eric quietly pulled me aside and said, ‘Thanks for mentioning the drums.’ He appreciated that… A good guy.”

Gene Simmons (bass, vocals): “I never knew anyone more humble in my life. Eric Carr was a kind soul who never said anything bad about anybody. He was also a double threat on drums, and vocals. I miss him.”

All In The Name Of Rock: Saliva

Have you ever wondered how or why a band comes up with their specific name? Sure you have. What I have found, through many of my interviews with bands, is that there is always a story. I will bring you those stories from all sorts of bands. Some bands you will know and some you won’t. This also will be the perfect opportunity for me to introduce some bands to you that you may not have heard of yet, whose stories are definitely equally as interesting!

Stay tuned here at Rock Confidential for some more interesting stories behind the band names, along with some kick ass interviews! All of the stories I bring you are directly from my own personal interviews with the bands.

I will admit, Saliva is one of those bands I truly have always wondered not only how they came up with their name…but why? Gross. But I will tell you, it was a very interesting anser I got from Josey Scott in our recent interview. I think you will agree. My curiosity is now satisfied.

Band name up this month is SALIVA.

“We wanted to come up with something that was already a household word. I love Nirvana, love the name Nirvana and I love their music. I just adored Kurt Cobain. It needed to be a good three syllable kick ass word like Nirvana or something like that and it has to already be a household word like, you know, something that’s cool like, I don’t know, Vaseline or something like that. And we made up a couple of other stupid rules like, you couldn’t have sex without it, it had to piss off the parents, you know stuff like that. So I was like, what about Saliva? And everybody was like…ewwww what?? I was like, what about Saliva? Just think about it. Everybody knows what Saliva is. It’s spit! And I was like, technically you can’t have sex without it because its natures lubricant. What a crazy 26 year old kid I must have been, and still am. I am 38 years old now but I am still that 18 year old kid that came up with crazy stuff. So, it just kind of stuck. It was just gross enough to be cool and strange enough to be remembered.” ~ Josey Scott

Sammy Hagar Claims New Van Halen CD Is 'All Old Stuff'

Sammy Hagar says new Van Halen is "All old stuff!"

"It didn't bother me when they threw me out." Sammy on Van Halen

Article from ROLLING STONE

We're hearing that Van Halen signed to Interscope this week.

What? VH? Van Halen? I don't think . . . How long has it been since they did a record? And that last one doesn't count. You have to go back to 1995. For them to take that long to make a record, I don't think it's ever going to happen. If it does, it better be good. Oh man. It actually might be. I'm not dogging them. I don't understand why they couldn't do something by now. [Laughs] Though I kind of do understand.

This seems legit. I think they actually, for real, signed to Interscope.

I thought they signed to Sony. Hmmm . . . Interesting. I'll be the first guy waiting in line at the record store, if I could find one anymore. I'll be really curious. I think they owe the fans that. I would love to see them make a great record. They have some of the most loyal fans in rock, and they've been treated so, so bad these last 20 years. I'm a real fan friendly guy.

The fans aren't too happy that they threw Michael Anthony out of the band.

It didn't bother me when they threw me out. I'm a solo artist. I can start a new band. But Mike? He's the most loyal guy, and the best bass player in the world – and the best background singer on the planet. His vocal sound is as much a part of Van Halen as anyone's. When they threw him out, I just thought "WHY? This is so wrong. This is so damned wrong!" Then to go back to Dave, FINALLY – but they threw Mike out first. Once again, it's not a fan friendly band. Eddie could have played a solo album with Wolfie. He could have produced it and gone on tour and played theaters with him. He could have done so many different things. He did not have to make Wolfie the bass player in Van Halen.

I find it interesting that David Lee Roth has barely made a peep in public since he rejoined the band. Before that, he wasn't exactly a press shy guy.

Yeah, this isn't very Dave-like. Obviously, he's trying to make it work. Look, I've been there. It's not an easy camp. It's gotten crazier and wackier, every day. I think that Dave has just learned that if he wants to make it work, he needs to shut up and hang in there and do what he can, and do what they say. It's a very strange situation.

Look, back in the day, Dave was the boss. He was running the damn show. When I came in, I was the boss. I was running the show, but I didn't want that job. It was always, "Well, what do you guys want to do?" They'd be like, "I don't know. What do you want to do?" Then all of a sudden, it became this wicked, freaking dictatorship – and nothing has happened since.

I think nothing would be more fascinating than a Some Kind of Monster-style documentary about the making of this new record. Can you even imagine?

I'd be curious to be a fly on that wall. I heard this record is old outtakes from the old days. I mean, stuff from before I even joined the band. I heard this five years ago though. Michael Anthony was curious if his background vocals would wind up on the album. I don't think it's a bad idea. It's kind of interesting. Bob Seger did it, and so did the Rolling Stones. I think it's an interesting thing to do in your old age if you can't come up with fresh, good stuff – or you can't get along. Because from what I heard, they aren't working with new material. Ed and Dave didn't actually write new songs. They took old stuff from previous sessions, and then maybe Dave had to go in and add vocals because they just had scat vocals, or even no vocal part at all.

That's bizarre, because in the few interviews that he does, Ed is always talking about how many great new guitar parts he's written.

Ed talks really weird about all that stuff recently. He goes, "I have all this music! So much music . . . " Well, they really aren't songs [laughs]. They're really not. It was always easy for me to write songs with Ed. He had all these parts, and I had these ideas. I'd be like, "Oh, go to B over there for a bridge – write a bridge, Ed." He'd do it, and it would be some bad ass shit. But it wasn't like he wrote instrumentals and I just had to write lyrics over them, like I do now with Joe Satriani. Joe writes friggin' instrumentals. Ed doesn't have any songs. I'm sorry. I love the guy's guitar stiff, but play me a song, will you?

DOKKEN TO ENTER THE STUDIO FOR A BRAND NEW ALBUM FOR 2012:

Frontiers Records is excited to announce the signing of Dokken for the worldwide release of the band's forthcoming studio album in the spring of 2012.
The cooperation between Frontiers and Dokken started with the release of the band's CD Lightning Strikes Again in 2007. The album marked a return to Dokken's signature style with melodic hooklines and blazing guitar riffs that epitomized the band's sound on such records as Tooth & Nail, Under Lock & Key, Back for the Attack and Dysfunctional.
"So far we have written 10 songs in only 8 weeks." says singer Don Dokken. "Usually we spend a year or more on our music. I can't explain why this time it came so fast, it just happened. So far the music is very uptempo and heavy, of course we know our fans like the classic Dokken sound and this is where our new music is headed. It's been a band of brothers doing what we love: 'music'".
Dokken plans to finish their new recording by the end of February and go out on the road in June. Top Rock Songs of 2011
(Banana 101.5) With the end of 2011 right around the corner, Banana1015.com decided to round up the songs that made the biggest splash at rock radio this year. Here are a couple from both ends of the list:
10) Volbeat's 'Fallen': The Danish hard rockers finally made a name for themselves in the United States after years of mega-popularity in their homeland. Volbeat's first single from 'Beyond Hell/Above Heaven' introduced the band's unique blend of rock, blues, metal, and rockabilly. We get the feeling that Volbeat will be a lot higher up on 'Best of the Year' lists in the future.

1) Seether's 'Country Song': The undisputed champion of 2011 is Seether's 'Country Song' — which was the most played song of the year by a landslide. A country fried hard rock song is probably the furthest thing from a safe bet, but pushing it as their lead single was probably the best move the South African post grungers could've made. 'Holding on to String Better Left to Fray' debuted at #2 on the Billboard Albums Chart, and continues to sell thanks to the powerful chart topping follow up single 'Tonight.' Who would've imagined the #1 rock song of the year would be called 'Country Song?' See what other songs made the list.

Megadeth Dave Mustaine's Favorite Things
(Banana 101.5) Dave Mustaine recently showed off his 10 most prized possessions which included an AC/DC record, some sort of Jewish ram's horn that wards off evil spirits, and a real live miniature horse named Rocky.

The Megadeth frontman sat down with Spin Magazine to list his 10 favorite things, during the video portion of the discussion Dave openly talks about his Messianic Jewish heritage, past career as a pot dealer, and openly admits to freebasing cocaine.

The video only focuses on a few of the items he listed, the others include a miniature horse named Rocky he found in a junkyard, an honorary Kentucky Colonel certificate, an unpainted Dean guitar body, a Finnish coat of arms his wife had made, a 'Troy' replica sword, and an autographed Raiders helmet. Dave explains the rest in the video which you can watch here.

Cream and The Firm Among Top Supergroups
(Gibson) The notion of the "supergroup" has always held a special fascination for rock fans, who relish the prospect of hearing what top tier artists can achieve when they join forces. True, superstar egos often clash, but when talent and chemistry come together in the right way, the results can be pure magic. Recently, the supergroup concept has taken on a new life – witness the latest entry, SuperHeavy – but through the years many major artists have attempted such projects. Gibson has picked 10 supergroups who have done proper justice to the concept. Here are a couple:

Cream: In contrast to their relatively brief period together – the group disbanded after a little more than two years – Cream's influence and enduring legacy have been monumental. Formed in 1966, the power trio of Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker journeyed through incendiary blues, searing hard rock and melody-driven (though still hard-hitting) psychedelia. Tracks such as "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room" helped pave the way for Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and similarly heavy bands that emerged at the dawn of the '70s.

The Firm: Founded in 1984, The Firm centered on Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and ex-Free singer Paul Rodgers, with bassist Tony Franklin and drummer Chris Slade (formerly of Uriah Heep) rounding out the lineup. Released in 1985, the band's self-titled debut album failed to light up the charts, but The Firm's music has aged well and fits comfortably alongside the varied accomplishments of both Page and Rodgers. A second album, Mean Business, was released in 1986, before The Firm closed its doors. Subsequently, Page said the group was never meant to last for more than two albums. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Rock Jools Holland
(hennemusic) Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds continue the rounds promoting their new self-titled debut album.

Tuesday, the former Oasis leader and his new band stopped by to perform on the season finale of the BBC's Later With Jools Holland, where the former Squeeze keyboardist asked Gallagher what he thought was more fun: being a solo artist or being in a band?

"Well, being in a big band," says Noel, "is the greatest trip in the world…but, it's different: it's like ice cream or jelly – which one would you prefer? You can't do both: you can't really be a solo artist and be in a band. It's been tried before." Check it out here.

Anniversary of Tommy Boyce's Suicide
(Gibson) One of rock and roll and pop music's most prolific and successful songwriters committed suicide in Nashville on this day in 1994. Tommy Boyce was 55. Boyce's wife, Caroline, found him dead in the living room of their Nashville condo, where he had shot himself.

One of the most successful songwriters of the'60s, Tommy and his writing partner Bobby Hart played a major role in The Monkees TV show, writing many of the group's early hits.

But the writing success had begun back in the pre-Beatles rock and roll era when the young Boyce, only recently moved to Los Angeles from Arizona, pestered Fats Domino enough for the star to listen to his song "Be My Guest." Fats recorded it and Boyce saw it rise to the top of the charts. Teaming up with Hart in 1959, Boyce and his new pal would pen hits for numerous acts – notably "Come a Little Bit Closer" for Jay and the Americans in 1964.

But it was a TV project that would bring them to mass attention. In 1965, The Monkees TV show producers hired Tin Pan Alley hit man Don Kirshner to oversee the soundtrack for a Beatles-inspirited sitcom. He, in turn, brought in the young and hip Boyce and Hart to produce and pen tracks for the TV series. First they wrote the infectious theme tune and then saw their song, and the group's debut single, "Last Train to Clarksville" become a #1 hit in the U.S. more on this story

Justin Bieber Alleged Baby To Take DNA Test?
(TMZ) Mariah Yeater -- Justin Bieber's alleged baby mama -- will submit her baby for DNA testing ... this according to her legal team.
Attorney Jeffrey Leving tells TMZ ... his client is NOT avoiding the DNA test, and can't wait to compare baby Tristyn's DNA with Justin Bieber's.

Although members of Justin's team have told TMZ Yeater and her team had gone radio silent since Justin took the test on Friday, Leving says his co-counsel has been in touch with Justin's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, Monday and Tuesday. Charles Manson Family Murder Auction Item Questioned
(TMZ) The Sharon Tate "engagement ring" hitting the auction block next week was NOT taken off the actresses' dead hand after she was murdered ... because she was NOT wearing any rings at the time of her death ... this according to Sharon's sister Debra.

Debra tells TMZ ... the ring featured in an upcoming auction on GottaHaveRockndRoll.com DID belong to the actress ... but she gave it away to a family friend long before she was killed by the Manson family in 1969.

Debra tells us ... the ring was not an "official" engagement ring -- but rather an "unofficial symbol of her relationship" with Roman Polanski. Debra says, "The ring was not Sharon's style and she never wore it."

Debra says Polanski later gave Sharon an "official" engagement ring -- a gold and diamond band "which she treasured."

Despite the auction house's claim, Debra is adamant Sharon was NOT wearing ANY rings on her finger at the time of her death -- adding, "Because Sharon was pregnant, she couldn't fit any rings on her finger."

Sharon was two weeks away from her due date when she was murdered. more on this story

Michael Jackson Death House Furniture Contains Secret Messages
(TMZ) Several items from the upcoming Michael Jackson death house auction -- including a mirror from MJ's inner sanctum -- contain messages the public was never meant to see ... and now, TMZ has obtained pictures of the secret inscriptions.

The mirror reads "Train, perfection March April Full Out" ... and according to a rep for Julien's Auctions -- the company behind the sale -- Jackson wrote the motivational message to himself in the months leading up to his "This Is It" tour.

The chalkboard on the right contains a heartbreaking message from one of Michael's children -- "I love Daddy. Smile, it's for free!" Both the mirror and the chalkboard have remained undisturbed since the singer's death.

Clearly, neither message was intended for public viewing -- but we're told the items are hitting the auction block on December 17 ... as is.

TMZ has learned ... last year, Flo decided he needed to find a safer place to store his famous Bugatti Veyron when he went out on tour ... so he approached a fancy car place called Euro Motorsports in Ft. Lauderdale and asked if he could store his ride in their showroom.

We're told management thought about it for all of two seconds before getting on board -- believing such a high-end car might attract new customers into the shop.

Turns out they were right -- TMZ spoke with one of the managers, Walter, who tells us the Bugatti has been a magnet for new business ... even contributing to the sale of TWO other Bugattis.

Will.i.am's Dream Collaboration With Rolling Stones Mick Jagger
(Gibson) Nobody says no to Will.i.am. Yet, when the rapper and producer set out to record his new single, "T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)," he thought there was little chance Rolling Stone Mick Jagger would agree to collaborate on the song.

In fact, that was his reason for asking Jagger. "I went to play material for the label and Jimmy Iovine's like, 'Yo, this is dope. Who are you gonna put on it?,'" Will told Rolling Stone. "I'm like, 'What are you talking about? It's finished, it's me.' So, he's like, 'Oh, you don't feature no one?'"

Will.i.am had to think fast. Who would be impossible to get on the song? "So I think of the hardest thing ever. And it happened, Mick Jagger. I just wanted to throw something out there that I thought could never be possible so they would stop asking me." Of course, Jagger agreed to do it

Singled Out: Underride's Blinded By You
Hello rock peeps around the world! This is Rev, the lead singer from the band Underride out of Seattle, WA. We're currently out on tour with Tantric, Man Made Machine and Eve to Adam playing songs from our new record "Distorted Nation" [available on iTunes].

To give this tour a kick in the @ss, we decided to pimp out one of our favorite tracks, "Blinded By You". I chose this song because it showcases many common ingredients we like to use when we cook up songs. "Blinded By You" has great energy and power from heavy guitar riffs and anthemic vocals to a fiercely melodic guitar solo.

The "Distorted Nation" era of Underride began with two new guitar players who approached our brand of "Camaro Rock" differently from the guys before them. "Blinded By You" was one of the first songs that Princess and Suzuki Sixx threw at me. I cranked it on my speaks and it just blew me away. Immediately, I sat down and wrote the vocal part in about a half hour. I know it sounds cliché, but the song kind of wrote itself.

We ran the song through the paces by working it live on the floor to iron out the arrangement making it leaner and brazenly straight forward. In typical fashion, I took the lyrical content from what was happening in my personal life at that time.

Sometimes relationships with friends take a turn for the worse and you're not even sure why. But, all too often, the damage is done and you're better off on your own. It's not meant to be a negative song. It's really about gaining power from independence. Moving forward is the best way to put "things" in your past.

I hope rock fans like the song as much as we do. Underride opens the show with "Blinded By You" and the fans that come out to support the rock show seem to really dig it!

Natalie Wood Death Investigation Won't Lead To Prosecution?
(TMZ) Sources in the L.A. County District Attorney's Office are scratching their heads over the Natalie Wood death investigation, because they say there's no way the D.A. is going to prosecute Robert Wagner or anyone else.

Although the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. says Robert Wagner is not a suspect, it's pretty clear -- as the last person to see Natalie Wood alive -- he's the target of the probe.

Under California law, even if Wagner accidentally pushed Natalie into the dark water ... the most he could be charged with is involuntary manslaughter. But here's the problem -- there's a statute of limitations of 3 years for that crime, so prosecutors would have had to file charges 27 years ago. Ditto voluntary manslaughter, which has a statute of limitations of 3 years.

The only crime for which anyone could be prosecuted is first degree murder, because there's no statute of limitations. Remember, there are no possible witnesses other than Robert Wagner. Short of a bizarre confession, D.A. sources say there's no chance of a prosecution. BTW, there's a 6-year statute of limitations on second degree murder.

As for why the Sheriff is investigating the death ... one D.A. source said, "It's an exercise in futility. I just don't get it." more on this story

Columbia Records has set a January 31, 2012 release date for Leonard Cohen's new album "Old Ideas". Here are the official details:

Singled Out: J. Dash's The Wop (Featuring Flo Rida)
Today J. Dash tells us about "The Wop" from the forthcoming debut album "Tabloid Truth". Here is the story:

The Wop started as a dance my friends and I did in the club to other people's music. The Wop itself is very simple and we would do so many different things in-between, like smoke the cigarette, kill the roach, hold the trophy….the dance could go on for hours and there would be a crowd of people at the club watching us.

It was so organic, we had so much swag when we were doing it that people HAD to watch to see what we were gonna do next. They wanted to hate but couldn't! The dance looks so much better in numbers so it would start as the three of us, then we'd teach some girls, then some guys would learn and next thing you know the whole place would be doin' the Wop.

One night my friends told me I HAD to make a song that we could do the dance to. I produce my own beats as well so I went back to my dorm room at UF and made the track. Honestly, since we had been doing the dance so much thebeat came very naturally, it was already in my head. I did that, wrote the lyrics, recorded it and mixed it all in one day. We took the rough version to the club and had the DJ spin it, immediately the people started reacting to it.

The song started as something for me and my friends, I had no idea it would become how huge it is today. Between my video and fan videos we have 25 MILLION YouTube views, which is just crazy! You should all be on the look out for my album Tabloid Truth, hitting iTunes early next year and make sure to make some videos of you and your friends doing the WOP!

TODAY'S DAY IN ROCK

New Van Halen Not Really New?
(superLOUD) Never shy around the topic of Van Halen, Rolling Stone caught up with Chickenfoot's Sammy Hagar and asked the Red Rocker about his old band. Sammy gave an interesting response when asked about the new Van Halen material:
Rolling Stone: I think nothing would be more fascinating than a Some Kind of Monster-style documentary about the making of this new record. Can you even imagine?

Sammy Hagar: I'd be curious to be a fly on that wall. I think it's an interesting thing to do in your old age if you can't come up with fresh, good stuff – or you can't get along. more on this story

Metallica Have To Learn Metallica
(Gibson) Metallica are set to perform 1991's "Black Album" in its entirety when they perform at next June's Download Festival at Donington in the U.K. But, according to the NME, drummer Lars Ulrich said the band will have to re-learn some of the album – including two tracks that Metallica has never played live.

The concert will include 'The Struggle Within' and 'Don't Tread on Me," Ulrich confirmed, and said: "Although to be honest with you, a song like 'The Struggle Within' is a lot easier to relearn than 'The Frayed Ends of Sanity [from …And Justice for All]. I don't think it's going to be too difficult for us to figure out these songs."

He said that the idea to play the album straight through came from Download Festival organizers.

"The people at Download asked. It wasn't our idea," Ulrich said. "The thing is, although we haven't played at Donington for six years, we have been to England pretty much every summer since then. So they wanted us to do something different, and that's what they came up with." more on this story

When Instinct: Decay was released in 2006, branded as a psychedelic extreme metal record, it was met with deeply divided feedback -some highly laudatory and some derisive. Five years later, the record sounds as good as ever and it seems clear that the derision was merely the backlash of closed-minded black metal fans. Change turned out to be a good thing - now Instinct: Decay is hailed as an enormous milestone in USBM history.

In fact, along with Leviathan, Krieg, and Wolves In The Throne Room, Nachtmystium are considered instrumental in forging a unique musical identity for the USBM scene. I think the first part of the song, the versey-chorusey parts were put together long before the whole crystal-cavern-disco-outro part which probably just came out spontaneously after a joint or a lemon-ginger tea from Pies and Thighs, our favorite snack spot across the street from our space.

The problem is, we've had that song around for a long time but are just now releasing it. That's why it's so hard to remember exactly how it evolved. It's a weird song so maybe it doesn't matter when it was written. The recording doesn't really feel like it fits in any particular two year-pop-trend-pattern-cycle that industry stiffs like to believe exist, maybe some combination of Jan '76, Feb '86, May '96, Sept '06 (what a weird month) and a few weeks ago. Who knows.

Lyrically, the song is about a boat captain who is running a shipment of guns and narcotics from Brazil to the Keys for export to the states. He is betrayed by his lover. His boat is boarded by a group of very good soccer players. They carry golden revolvers and fight valiantly for their heroine (not the drug), Sister Crystalline, also the Captain's fraudulent bed-mate. Her actions are sanctified by the fact that she is the leader of an ancient-mystic-shamanistic-psychotropic religious society. Her motives are unclear, even to me. If only I had a few more hyphens I could probably figure it out. She probably means well, even though she behaved badly.

VINCE NEIL, BRUCE KULICK Perform At 'Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp' In New York

(Video) - Nov. 21, 2011
Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp was founded by David Fishof in 1997 as the ultimate music experience for the amateur or aficionado, pairing music lovers of all levels together with rock icons for a first-hand immersion in the rock 'n' roll lifestyle. Camp attendees move from spectator to band member, sharing the stage — and limelight — with rock legends for an once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Forty-seven wannabe rockers took advantage of Citi card's exclusive offer to attend the New York Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp in late October and got the opportunity to jam, rehearse and perform with some of the biggest names in rock 'n' roll.

Video footage of MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil and former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick performing at the event can be seen below (courtesy of Guitar International).
