Machine Head's Robb Flynn To Have Emergency Surgery
Machine Head frontman Robb Flynn has to undergo emergency surgery which has caused the band to drop off their current North American tour with Dethklok, All That Remains and Black Dahlia Murder. Their camp sent out the following:
Flynn had planned to go under the knife in January after completing the tour as he has been playing through the pain of a double inguinal hernia since the tour started in October. He had hoped to continue the tour despite extreme discomfort, but it's become too difficult to continue on. Flynn will undergo surgery today, Wednesday, November 14 in Minneapolis before returning home to California to recover, rest and recuperate. Machine Head will rejoin the tour in Portland, OR.

Below is Flynn's statement about his health and the tour. "I've been toughing out an inguinal hernia below my waistline since June of last year, and a few months ago got a second hernia in my nuts. What basically happens is my guts drop into my nuts, and it looks like I have a third testicle (man, I can hear the jokes already!) It hasn't been that painful, and I've gone to the doctor a few times to take care of it, but he said after surgery I probably couldn't sing for a few weeks, and since that wasn't going to happen, I scheduled it for January when I had a break. more on this story

Jimi Hendrix A Big Influence on Lemmy As A Singer
(CBS Local) While many musicians were influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Motorhead frontman Lemmy knew the man:

He actually worked as a roadie for Jimi in the 1960s before joining Hawkwind (and ultimately forming Motorhead). He spent time with the man both in the studio and on the stage, and he told CBS Local that Hendrix was a big influence on him as a vocalist.

"He helped me to cement my resolve as a singer," he says. "He hated singing, he would board himself up in the corner of a room with a microphone and he's record like that. I still do that now, myself. He must have been insecure about his singing. I thought he was a great singer, he had a lot of soul." more on this story

Mick Jagger's Brown Sugar Love Letters Going Up For Auction
(CBS Local) Mick Jagger's love letters to Marsha Hunt, the woman who famously inspired the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar," are being sent to auction block next month in England, The Guardian reports.

Ten letters from Jagger, written in July and August 1969, will be sold December 12th at Sotheby's, where they are expected to fetch £70,000-£100,000 (roughly $111,000-$158,000).

The letters supposedly show an intellectual, sensitive Jagger who was exceedingly self-aware about his fame. Written while Jagger was filming the movie Ned Kelly in Australia, the letters find him referencing the death of Stones guitarist Brian Jones, as well as his feelings about Bob Dylan and John Lennon/Yoko Ono. He discusses the reading material sent to him by Hunt (Emily Dickinson poems, Vaslav Nijinsky's diaries), and includes bits of lyrics he's writing (like the track "Monkey Man"). more on this story

John Fogerty Signs Book Deal For Memoir
Little, Brown and Company have inked a deal with John Fogerty to publish his memoir in 2014. They sent over this background:

In his long-awaited memoir, John Fogerty—one of rock's most important artists and a national treasure who's sold over 100 million albums—will recount his remarkable life. Fogerty's private and professional journey is one of the great sagas in American music, and his book will interweave the facts of his life with the music that emerged from his personal joys and battles. This includes his time as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for one of the most beloved and successful rock bands of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fogerty wrote hit after hit, including "Proud Mary," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Fortunate Son," "Up Around the Bend," "Run Through the Jungle," "Long as I Can See the Light," "Born on the Bayou," and so on—distinctly American songs that coalesced the strong emotions running through a nation at war in Vietnam. His solo career includes the album Centerfield, as well as Grammy Award–winning records and award-winning tours. John Fogerty sits beside a handful of musical songwriting legends. He was a hit maker, and he is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time.

Fogerty will write about the pressures of sudden fame, his tumultuous relationships with his bandmates—including his brother, Tom—and his long and costly battle for creative freedom from his record label, a battle that was taken all the way to the Supreme Court. Crushed by how the record label victimized him, he was forced to walk away from it all while they were the number one band in the world. "I want to tell the story of how I fought—hard—to maintain my artistic integrity in the face of opposing forces." He will also discuss his inspirations, including meeting his wife, Julie, and eventually building a family with her, which brought him back to music. He will also look forward to where his journey will take him next, including his forthcoming album Wrote a Song for Everyone, due in 2013, and upcoming collaborations with the Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Kid Rock, and Dawes. more on this story

Dave Navarro Replaces Band's Stolen Guitar
(CBS Local) We were just reporting on the sad but common occurrences of bands having their instruments stolen on tour, as a Good Samaritan recently returned a banjo that was taken from British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons during a swing through Australia.

In another report of stolen gear with a happy ending, Canadian husband-wife duo the Marrieds had an acoustic guitar lifted at a recent gig.

After offering a reward for the guitar's safe return, the band was pleasantly surprised when none other than Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro took it upon himself to send the couple one of his signature model "Jane" Epiphone acoustic guitars to replace the one (a Navarro edition Yamaha axe) that had been taken.

Arsis Replace Christopher Amott
Arsis have recruited Brandon Ellis to replace guitarist Christopher Amott who left the group to join Arch Enemy.

"I am super happy to say that Brandon Ellis has recently become the new lead guitarist for Arsis," commented vocalist/guitarist Jim Malone. "Not only is he one of the best musicians that I have been able to work with, but he shares my passion for all things that are 80's metal, including ridiculously tacky paint jobs on guitars. I am beyond excited about writing new material with Brandon. Until then, listen for his shredilicious leads on the upcoming Arsis full length. Come check him out live with Arsis this December!"

"Initially when Nick joined Arch Enemy, we all thought we could make it work with him having the time for both bands," continued bassist Noah Martin. "Things unfortunately overlapped and we weren't able to work on the new album with him. We appreciate everything he's done for Arsis. We'll miss our friend greatly and do wish him all the best. Both Nick and Ryan Knight (The Black Dahlia Murder), contributed ridiculous leads for the album.

"Brandon's solos on this full-length are both crushing and particularly creative. His presence, along with Shawn's (Priest – drums), were integral to the tone of this album. We're in the post-production stage, now that the masters were just finished. In the meantime, come have beers with us on the Sonata Arctica run!" View of Youtube clip of Ellis playing here.

Singled Out: Tusmorke
Today Benedikt Momrak from Tusmørke tells us about "Høstjevndøgn" from their brand new album "Underjordisk Tusmørke". Here is the story:

The idea for Høstjevndøgn (Autumn Equinox) came about one autumn evening as I was looking out the window at the decaying flowers of the lilac, pondering how everything goes into the earth and is resurrected like Re Horakhty. I fell into reveries about the simultaneously circular and teleological nature of time. The seasons change, we give them names, they reoccur, but at the same time there is a forward movement. The movement is circular and has direction at the same time, both in a line and in a circle. What is the meaning of creation and corruption, flowers blooming just to fade? There is no apparent answer in words alone, and the song expresses a longing for understanding more than any attempt at statement of fact. The circle leads us to we don't know where. We dwell for a spell in the thickening twilight between two nights. Before and beyond there is darkness.

The song was originally recorded on an acoustic guitar in the kitchen of my girlfriend's apartment in Iladalen. The chorus was made while out walking and recorded on my mobile phone. Actually, a well-known cultural personality in Norway has urged people to respect those who walk around singing into their phones, because they might be creating important works of art.

As a basically neo-neo-romantic project, Tusmørke incorporates a great longing for the splendor of the past. In this piece we merge this with trepidation for the future and a listless questioning of the point of it all. The equinoxes and solstices play an important part in the thought world of Tusmørke, and the title was chosen since the autumn equinox occurred during the writing of the lyrics, which main message basically is that there is a lot to be learnt from contemplating rotting fruit.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Singled Out: Ill Nino
() Today Christian Machado of Ill Nino tells us about their new song "The Depression" from their brand new album "Epidemia". Here is the story:

"The Depression" is just one of the 10 faces that define the character within "Epidemia". Epidemia is the Spanish word for Epidemic. It is simply a nickname that I gave this state of mind which brings us closer to the question of life and death.

"The Depression" is not a political statement nor is it a social statement. It's a very personal song that demands from the more obscure side of our feelings. To simplify, it can also be seen as a song about how a lone psychotic gunman could walk into a theater and remove many living souls from this ride we call life. It simply is about a state of mind and the tragedy which occurs when all faith is lost.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and check out the lyric video right here!

Their cover of "Manic Depression" is on their 2001 EP The Further Adventures Of The Cybernauts. Collen has also covered Hendrix's "Fire" with his other band, Man Raze. Check out the video here.

Mike Portnoy Reportedly Has Onstage Meltdown
Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy reportedly had a meltdown onstage during Portnoy / Sheehan / Macalpine / Sherinian show in Manila, Philippines on November 6th.

BW&BK posted a video with what they call Portnoy's onstage rant/rap and also offered Portnoy's side of the story:

"Not to excuse my actions, but at least to explain the situation: This PSMS tour has been VERY difficult on all of us in terms of gear and production. The only way we have been able to make it to such far away places such as Manila, Russia, Israel, Indonesia, etc (where it is normally VERY expensive to tour unless you are a 'name' band that has been around for many years) is we've have had to make concessions by using supplied gear and local techs at each show.

"Granted, WE agreed to these terms and are willing to make it work - however, on at least a half dozen occasions on this tour we have been incredibly frustrated to arrive at the venue only to find the band's gear requirements were simply blatantly ignored (wrong keyboards, wrong amps, Zildjian cymbals, etc) AND were not setup and ready for us as was supposed to be the case and what the promoters had promised. " - Read the rest of his statement and see video of the incident here.

Aerosmith Producer Discusses New Album
(hennemusic) Aerosmith fans looking to find out how the band's just-released, decade-in-the-making studio LP, "Music From Another Dimension!", was created can listen to exclusive excerpts from producer Jack Douglas discussing the real-time-recording of the album ahead of the release of a forthcoming record producers anthology, "Behind The Boards: The Making Of Rock & Roll's Greatest Records Revealed", due in December from Hal Leonard Books.

Among other commentary, Douglas declared excitedly at the top of his conversation on the making of the band's new LP that "I was looking to get back to the truth in both sound and the band themselves, breaking it down to the raw sound that we used to get, which is two guitars, bass and drums, vocals, an occasional keyboard, an occasional lead over the two rhythms going. And then truth in sound. I mean, we recorded to tape; the processing is all old analog 2 bear, so we're really looking to get back to where we were in the '70s in feel. So that's what we're doing, trying to make a true album. Some of the albums during the 1990s, some were very successful and some were made that feel like they were trying to sell to a young audience."

"On this record, we want to do two things: we want to go to the fanbase, and really the hardcore fans who let us know all over the world what kind of record they want to hear, so that's what we're doing," added Douglas. "And then, Steven [Tyler] has created so many new fans with 'Idol', and so many people have gone back to listen to the early stuff that even the kids want to hear that kind of thing again. So we're just having a blast, and when you make a record that's about the truth, and true, it's always more fun, because you don't have the pressure of trying to be something you're not on the record." - A lot more including audio clips here.

REO Speedwagon Going Nashville
(Gibson) Are the guys of REO Speedwagon going country? Strange as it may sound, it appears REO are trading in their classic rock sounds for something with a tad more twang. According to The Tennessean, the band recently took a trip to Nashville to record the first song for the group's upcoming studio album. REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin even co-wrote the track, called "Nothing We Can't Rise Above," with country-music producer Chris Lindsey and Journey keyboard player Jonathan Cain.

"I got turned on by this title, and Jon Cain had written something in a political way, and when I heard it, I went to a different place with it," Cronin said about the song. "I tend to like to write about relationships [and what makes them] work or fall apart, so that's the direction the song took."

Cronin says he felt totally comfortable in the Nashville scene. After all, he recorded his first album with REO in Nashville in 1972. "Kids with loud music coming to Nashville didn't make a lot of sense back then," he said, "but I've always loved Nashville. As a songwriter, this is my home away from home." - more on this story

When I first met with Alex [Lifeson] in early 2005 about the possibility of doing more work together on R30, our first conversation veered off to a coffee laden all out bond-fest about how exciting 2112 would be remixed in 5.1. Our second subject was the mixing of R30 – go figure."

"We're a band again, and holy shit, we're in the studio," Tyler tells Rolling Stone of the sessions in Boston and Los Angeles. "We had just gotten over breaking up again and going through the tumult that we go through at various times of our life – because we know how to be real good onstage, but I don't know how to be a social animal. I can work a room, but when it comes to being intimate and honest and open, I don't know how to offer that up all the time . . . We were in the studio and evoking what's been tied up inside of us for years and getting that off our chest."

JACK DOUGLAS TALKS AEROSMITH:

Aerosmith fans looking to check out how the band's just-released, decade-in-the-making studio LP Music From Another Dimension, can listen to exclusive excerpts from producer Jack Douglas discussing the real-time-recording of the album ahead of the release of a forthcoming record producers anthology that, 'Behind the Boards: The Making of Rock & Roll's Greatest Records Revealed,' due in stores nationwide from Hal Leonard Books in December, 2012. Live audio excerpts can be found at: www.reverbnation.com/behindtheboards.
Among other commentary, Douglas declared excitedly at the top of his conversation on the making of the band's new LP that: "I was looking to get back to the truth in both sound and the themselves, breaking it down to the raw sound that we used to get, which is: two guitars, bass and drums, vocals, an occasional keyboard, an occasional lead over the two rhythms going. And then truth in sound, I mean we recorded to tape; the processing is all old analog 2 bear, so we're really looking to get back to where we were in the '70s in feel. So that's what we're doing, trying to make a true album. Some of the albums during the 1990s, some were very successful and some were made that feel like they were trying to sell to a young audience."
"On this record, we want to do two things: we want to go to the fanbase, and really the hard core fans who let us know all over the world what kind of record they want to hear- so that's what we're doing. And then, Steven has created so many new fans with Idol, and so many people have gone back to listen to the early stuff that even the kids want to hear that kind of thing again. So we're just having a blast, and when you make a record that's about the truth, and true, its always more fun because you don't have the pressure of trying to be something you're not on the record."

Douglas also took fans inside the heart of the band's writing process throughout the making of the album, sharing that: "the way it works is: we come up with a lick, and then we develop the lick into a feel, and a feel is something that Steven can hold in his hands and bite into. And as soon as he's got that, and feels he can bite into it, we sit in the rehearsal room and we work it up so it's something that he can start singing over—even if it's not lyrics, he starts to get a feel for what the lyrics might be, and he starts singing syllables. Then we go right in to record it while the idea's fresh. Then we listen back to it a few times, make some changes, and go on to another tune."
Once the band had reached a creative consensus on keeper tracks that have thus far included singles like Legendary Child and What Could Have Been Love, the producer added: "We might come back to that tune later with some fresh ideas that may just be changing a couple of chords in a chorus, but slowly these things develop until we end up at the point where we have 15 songs that feel like they're almost complete. But now maybe a couple of chords change here or there, maybe the corner notes on the bass turn to eighth notes, things like that. All the while Steven is singing along, and he's in the control room right next to me. Sometimes I'll give him a 57, and I can be doing an overdub, and Steven is singing right into everybody's headphones, and it starts to take shape."
The book is available for pre-order at: www.halleonard.com.
