A Different Side To Frank Zappa
(Gibson) A new book by one-time Frank Zappa assistant Pauline Butcher paints a fascinating picture of the American guitar pioneer.

"Frank Zappa was so serious about his work: it was his whole life. He did nothing but get up in the morning, compose all day at the piano and then go to bed. Between times he was chain-smoking and drinking endless cups of coffee. The melee went on around him but he ignored it.

"I was as odd to the freaks as they all seemed to me. I was this straight English girl and when I wrote letters home to say that Frank Zappa didn't take drugs – because my parents were very concerned – nobody believed it because of the way he looked. But he was the most conventional, conservative man." more on this story

In regards to A Fragile King and the formation of Vallenfyre, Greg comments, "The album is called A Fragile King which is a reference to my fathers' battle with cancer...In the late summer of 2009, my father John Mackintosh was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Later in the Autumn as his treatment progressed, Paradise Lost embarked on the their European tour to support the latest album [Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us]. A week into this, I received a call from my mother telling me that the doctors had found cancer in his lungs and it was terminal. He only had weeks to live. I made the decision to leave the tour leaving my very able guitar tech Milly [not be confused with Vallenfyre's Mully] to take my place. I went and stayed with my parents for the next few weeks. After a very sad and painful time he passed away on the 2nd of December early in the morning. Over the next few weeks I experienced all the famous stages of grief. It started to become very self destructive so I decided to channel it into creating something. To pay respects to the man that drove us to our very first gigs because none of us could drive. The only Dad I knew that listened to Bolt Thrower's Peel Sessions on the radio. The guy who gave me my first chord book. I decided that I was going to go right back to the beginning. To my roots in Death, Crust and Doom. It all started very angst ridden. This wasn't originally meant for anyone else to hear. It was a release. After recording some material I realized that I was actually enjoying doing this but I wanted friends involved so it could actually become real fun."

Alberta Cross Singled Out Week: Final Day
This week Alberta Cross releases their The Rolling Thunder EP, which features 5 songs, each recorded in a different city around the world. To celebrate we asked frontman Petter to tell us about each song:

Money for the Weekend / Pocket Full of Shame Musically speaking, this track was inspired by Mr. Keith Richards. I was reading a book about him, and it went into detail about the tunings that he used to use. When I wrote the main riff using one particular tuning, it reminded me of a Stones song. In the end, though, I think it seems more inspired by The Stooges, but lyrically it covers something entirely different.

Driving With Myself This song was the product of a jam session in Woodstock, NY when we lived there last winter. We stayed at an art hotel in the mountains that dated back over 100 years -- it was very literally in the middle of nowhere. Technically speaking, it wasn't even supposed to be open in the winter. We just convinced them to let us practice and write with our gear set up in the lobby and living room. I wrote a lot of this track on keys while Alec played guitar and Sam played keys as well. All the while, Austin and Terry came up with the groove.

Many times when I write music, it just comes out of me, and I'm not completely sure what it's about til a bit later down the line -- its kind of this out of body experience. "Driving With Myself" was like that, but now I know that it was written about being an outsider.

This track was also recorded at Electric Lady Studios. I remember that I used an old Wurly keyboard that the the Stones used on Sticky Fingers. That felt pretty special.

Rolling Thunder This song is actually the oldest one on the EP. I wrote this tune on the piano just after returning to London from my first trip to New York. I remember that Terry and I really wanted to move out there, but financially it was really impossible at the time. We recorded this song in the middle of nowhere Wales. I remember that the only company we had out there was a group of sheep that constantly stood outside the cottage and looked in at us. I'm sure they thought we were weirdos. It was like Withnail and I.

Michael Jackson Death Photo Leaks, Trial Starts

A disturbing picture of Michael Jackson lying dead on a hospital gurney emerged yesterday in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray. Murray is the doctor on trial for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson, accused of negligence leading to the pop star's death.

As a warning, I do show the photo below, so please exit the page if you do not wish to see. I debated using the picture and decided I would. ABC's website already had done so, convincing me it was newsworthy and not too "tabloid" for me to show.

Also heard in court was a recording of a drugged Michael Jackson on the telephone, sounding completely incoherent. Michael Jackson was preparing for a 50-date comeback tour when he passed away. The cause of death was the drug propofol, which was apparently legally prescribed to Jackson by Murray. The doctor could face 4 years in prison if convicted, as well as have his license revoked. Jackson died on June 25, 2009 at the age of 50.

To hear the phone call or for the latest on the Michael Jackson trial, head on over to ABC News. The manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray is expected to last for 6 weeks.

And obviously you could tell there was an incredible ability, and there was a stage presence, and all this type of stuff wrapped up in this incredible type of personality. And I think we were a little intimidated by him in the beginning because he was just so unique. Billy Corgan Says Oceania will Make or Break Smashing Pumpkins

Smashing Pumpkins’ frontman Billy Corgan says new album Oceania will be a make-or-break moment for his band.

The Pumpkins, who have been releasing single tracks online as part of their Teargarden By Kaleidyscope project, will put out a full album Oceania, later in 2011. Corgan says how it is received will define the future of his band.

Corgan told Billboard: “If we’re able to get that sense that something is happening again and get people to rally behind us a bit, I think the next three, four years will be very interesting for the band. I think if [Oceania] basically hits the same wall a lot of the other stuff has hit, we’re going to have to step back and really evaluate where we’re going, because it’s a tremendous amount of energy to put out to just feel like you’re throwing a pebble in the ocean.”

Corgan acknowledges that he overestimated the impact that releasing music straight to the Internet. He says the traditional album release of Oceania is needed to have a real impact.

“I just saw we weren’t getting the penetration in to everybody that I would have hoped. We have 1.3 million followers on our Facebook page, right? So you think you put a song up and 1.3 million people are going to see it, but only if they’re looking at the exact moment it goes up. They’re not necessarily searching and their friends aren’t necessarily going to tell them about it. I just saw that we weren’t reaching the sort of casual person who still gets their information from traditional sources. So I thought, ‘What do I need to do?’ And then I thought; ‘OK, I’ll go back to making an album.’”

Of Oceania, Corgan says it features “some of the most melodic work I’ve ever done, but somehow it rocks pretty hard, too. It’s probably the most open-sounding album I’ve ever made. The general description I’ve heard from people who have heard it is that it reminds them of the Pumpkins in the way they like the Pumpkins, but somehow it sounds new.”

Oceania will be Smashing Pumpkins’ first “proper” release since 2007’s Zeitgeist. Smashing Pumpkins start a 12-date U.S. tour in November 2011 and plan to tour the rest of the world in 2012.

Dave Grohl Once Quit Nirvana

(Gibson) Dave Grohl briefly left Nirvana in 1993. Why? Because Kurt Cobain, astonishingly, complained about Grohl's drumming skills.

An upcoming biography, This Is a Call: The Life and Times of Dave Grohl, reveals the drummer/guitarist, already fed up of tensions within Nirvana, decided he'd had enough after overhearing Cobain talking about him on a plane. Remembering a band flight from Seattle to Los Angeles in '93, Grohl says: "Kurt was kinda f----d up. And I heard him talking about how s----y a drummer I was."

At the flight's end, Grohl learned from Novoselic that Cobain wanted him to "play more like" Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters, who briefly played drums for Nirvana prior to Grohl. This was the last straw for Grohl, who called Nirvana's tour manager Alex McLeod and told him he wanted out of the band.

Bob Dylan Accused of Plagiarism

(Ultimate Classic Rock) Bob Dylan's latest collection of paintings has come under fire by art buffs.

The works of art for the singer's 'The Asia Series' collection went on display at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City on Sept. 20 and quickly came under question as being possibly plagiarized.

Dylan was reportedly inspired by his travels to the Far East for this paintings, but The New York Times reports that art critics are raising their eyebrows and are calling the paintings direct copies of photographs that are from the 20th century and are widely available.

Roger Waters To Bring The Wall Tour To Stadiums

(hennemusic) The day after a seriously rocking performance of a track from "The Wall" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Tuesday – with the Foo Fighters, no less (see it here) - comes news that Roger Waters will be bringing his live show of the Pink Floyd classic back to the States for a return engagement next year.

And it's occasionally going to be a super-size trip, including some U.S. stadium shows in cities like New York, Chicago and Boston.

"There are quite a few markets we didn't cover last time, like Austin," Waters tells Rolling Stone. "But we want to base the tour around Saturday nights in baseball stadiums. As we speak, I'm at my office working on an outdoor version of the show."

Britney Spears' Dad's Sweet Deal For Femme Fatale Tour
(TMZ) Britney Spears' daddy will get more than a million bucks -- possibly a lot more -- for his work as the manager of Britney's Femme Fatale Tour.

TMZ has obtained legal docs in Britney's conservatorship case, which show Britney's overall manager, Larry Rudolph, wants to give up 2% of his cut to Jamie, because daddy Spears has done such a great job -- Larry's cut is 10% of the gross.

We've learned Jamie has not gotten an extra penny for his work as Tour Manager -- a position he's held since February.

According to the docs, Jamie negotiated a sweet deal for Britney with Live Nation, the tour promoter. He's also coordinated Britney's personal schedule, and supervised her arrivals and departures. He's handled finances, managed Britney's security to protect her from the paparazzi and made 200 - 400 calls and other communications a day on Brit's behalf.

Even though Larry Rudolph is voluntarily giving 2% of his cut to Jamie, it still has to be approved by the court, but that's just a formality. more on this story

Mel Gibson Denies Payment To Oksana's Son
(TMZ) Mel Gibson is taking issue with legal documents filed by Oksana Grigorieva's lawyer -- which state that Mel paid $100,000 to Oksana's son Alexander Dalton, the son she had with actor Timothy Dalton.

Mel's rep tells us, "The deal between Mel and OG is exactly what was set forth on the record, in open court, on August 31, 2011" -- when Mel agreed to pay Oksana $250,000 as part of their custody settlement agreement.

His rep continues, "Mel is paying exactly the sums set forth to OG -- and is paying no additional sums to Alexander Dalton or anyone else."

"How OG chooses to have any sums due from Mel allocated is her business."

But as we previously reported, TMZ has obtained legal documents filed by Oksana's lawyer -- which claim, "Of the first $250,000 paid ... $100,000 belongs to Alexander Dalton who is waiving his rights to sue Mel Gibson and must be compensated for this to be lawful."

The docs continue, "If Alexander Dalton does not get his $100,000.00, he cannot waive his rights to sue. Mr. Gibson negotiated for that as a part of the settlement and is entitled to the benefit of his bargain."

Alberta Cross Singled Out Week: Ramblin' Home and Wait
This week Alberta Cross releases their The Rolling Thunder EP, which features 5 songs, each recorded in a different city around the world. To celebrate we asked frontman Petter to tell us about each song:

Ramblin' Home: I wrote "Ramblin Home" a few years ago in London, England. It's an older blues gem that we've been playing on the road for a while, but we never produced a recording that did it justice until now. The live version always had this gritty vibe to it, but my goal for the EP recording was to bring out it the darker soul sound beneath the surface. We recorded it at Jimmys old quarters, Electric Lady studios in New York City.

Wait: "Wait" was written at a studio in the middle of nowhere outside of Charlottesville, VA called The Haunted Hollow. I originally wrote the song in bed on a guitar but felt almost immediately that I wanted it to be more synth heavy. The lyrics are mainly about everything you could have done -- all the different paths you could have taken but didn't. This tune has always been one of my favourites.

Ozzie Guillen out as White Sox manager, will join Marlins

By Bob Nightengale, USA TODAY
Updated 9m ago

Update 10:55 a.m. ET: Outgoing Chicago White Sox manager removed the post from his website discussing his new job as Florida Marlins manager.

In a new post he thanked the Chicago fans and said that the city will always be home after 22 years in the White Sox organization.

Guillen also called it "a sad time" but added "I know there are better days awaiting me in the future."

Update, 3 a.m. ET: Outgoing Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen says that he has agreed to become the Florida Marlins' next manager, likely by Wednesday.

''Although it's sad my time with the White Sox has ended,'' Guillen wrote on his website, "I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of the Marlins organization. I have an unbelievable amount of respect for the Marlins, owner Jeffrey Loria, president Larry Beinfest and general manager Michael Hill. I can't thank them enough for this opportunity and look forward to the future. I can't wait to get started!''

The White Sox will receive compensation, White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said, likely a minor-league player, when Guillen's deal becomes official.

''I think Jerry did me a favor,'' Guillen said. ''It was my call, and I appreciate the Chicago White Sox for letting me do what I want. Maybe it's not for the best. Maybe I won't appreciate what I've got here.

''But sometimes you have to turn the page. Hopefully, the next book will be as good as this one.''

Update, 12:02 a.m ET: Ozzie Guillen managed his final game Monday for the Chicago White Sox, and is expected to become the Florida Marlins' next manager. White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf granted Guillen's request to be released from his contract after refusing to give him a contract extension. The White Sox will retain compensation rights if Guillen accepts a managerial position with the Florida Marlins or any other team.
CAPTION
By Charles Cherney, AP

"Hopefully, they'll be better without me,'' said Guillen, who had a contract for about $2 million in 2012. "I wish them the best. I walk out of here with my head up.

"This is a business move. …Life is about money. People don't believe that, but people are happy after they make money. I have to make money out of somewhere. I'm not a doctor or a lawyer, where you'll have a job for the rest of your life.''

The White Sox, who had trade talks Monday with the Marlins, have yet to finalize a deal for Guillen's rights. The Marlins are seeking a manager to replace Jack McKeon, who announced his resignation Monday.

Guillen, who won the third-most games by a manager in White Sox history, said he didn't deserve an extension. The White Sox, despite their largest payroll in franchise history, are 78-82 and in third place in the AL Central.

"I'm very disappointed in this year, yes,'' Guillen said. "There's a lot of disappointment. But no regrets.

"All the stuff you guys want to blame, please don't do that."

When asked if Guillen plans to bring coaches with him to Florida, or his next managing job, he said: "Hell no! They got me fired."

Earlier: "We certainly cannot thank Ozzie enough for all he has done during his eight seasons as manager of the Chicago White Sox, highlighted by an unforgettable 2005 World Series championship," White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a release. "I personally appreciate everything he has done for this organization, our fans and the city of Chicago. We shared the greatest moments together and wish him nothing but future success in baseball and in life."

EARLIER: Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who failed in an attempt Monday to receive a contract extension, told the club that he wants to be released from his contract and join the Florida Marlins, according a high-ranking White Sox official unauthorized to speak publicly.

The White Sox, who twice have had trade talks with the Marlins about trading Guillen to the organization, were in negotiations with Florida officials Monday night. Guillen has a contract through 2012 that pays him about $2 million.

"The problem's not resolved," said Guillen, who met for 30 minutes Monday with White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. "I told [Reinsdorf] that I don't want to come here with the same contract I have for next year. I think I've earned a little bit more than that."

Yet, without a contract extension and the Marlins having a managerial opening, Guillen expressed his desire to leave.

"He [Reinsdorf] knows I wouldn't like to come back [without an extension]," Guillen said. "I said that three weeks ago. I think I'm better than that. I think I give a lot of good things and a lot of headaches, too.

"Life is about money. People don't believe that, but people are happy after they make money. I have to make money out of somewhere. I'm not a doctor or a lawyer, where you'll have a job for the rest of your life.

"I think whatever happens, happens and move on right away in the right direction. Both sides. My direction is make money and make my family happy and hopefully win somewhere else."

The Marlins have a managerial vacancy with Jack McKeon announcing Monday that he will resign at the season's conclusion on Wednesday.

"If they want me, they should,'' Guillen said. "I'm good at what I do. They should. Everybody can want me, but it's one thing if they can get me. It's not easy like, 'OK I'm going to get you and you're going to come here.'

"If the Marlins want me, good for them.''

Michael Jackson's Son May Testify At The Star's Death Trial
(TMZ) Michael Jackson's eldest son Prince -- an eyewitness to the horrific scene in the bedroom where his father lost his life -- does not want to testify in the Conrad Murray trial, but he's telling family he'll do what needs to be done to get justice for his departed dad.

Sources close to Prince tell TMZ ... the 14-year-old is "nervous" and worried that if he's called to the stand he might get flustered and "mess up."

We're told if Prince is called by prosecutors ... Katherine will ask her lawyers to request that the entire courtroom be cleared during his testimony. Judge Michael Pastor almost certainly will prohibit the media from training a camera on Prince, but it's unlikely he'll clear the courtroom.

As we previously reported, Prince is on the prosecution's witness list, since Dr. Murray summoned Prince to the bedroom for help during the emergency. When Prince arrived, he dissolved into tears. more on this story

Details About Justin Bieber's Titanic Date With Selena Gomez
(TMZ) TMZ has learned just how Justin Bieber surprised GF Selena Gomez with an intimate dinner and a movie for 2 at the otherwise empty Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

We broke the story ... Justin and Selena attended a Demi Lovato concert Friday night at the nearby Nokia Theater. After the show, just after 11 PM, Justin instructed Selena, "Follow me," and then took her through the underground tunnel that connects Nokia to Staples.

When they walked inside the empty, 20,000 seat arena, the lights had been dimmed and there was a table for 2 on the floor, with candles ... of course.

We're told Justin had the fancy Staples restaurant -- The Lexus Club -- cater the meal. They ate steak and pasta, and when they were done, suddenly the movie "Titanic" appeared on the screen.

Justin got the idea from the movie, "Mr. Deeds," where Adam Sandler surprises Winona Ryder with a date at Madison Square Garden.

Selena was "shocked" when she realized what was up.

As for Justin ... he didn't have to pay a penny, because the honchos at Staples were grateful he filled the arena 3 times in the past. more on this story

Soundtrack for Janie Jones Set For Release
Nettwerk Records have set an October 11th release date for the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack for Janie Jones (Tribeca Film). The soundtrack features 11 songs, eight of which were performed by the film's lead actors, Academy Award nominee Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine, My Sister's Keeper) and Alessandro Nivola (Laurel Canyon, Coco Before Chanel), in addition to tracks from recording artists William Fitzsimmons, Gemma Hayes and Patrick Watson.

In this music-based independent film, an on-the-road musician is forced to take responsibility for the daughter he never knew he had. Janie Jones is a heartwarming rock 'n' roll road drama from writer-director David M. Rosenthal (Falling Up), inspired by his own experiences. Rocker Ethan Brand (Nivola) and his band are on the comeback trail when a former flame (Oscar® nominee Elisabeth Shue) drops a bomb in his lap—their 13-year-old daughter, Janie Jones (Breslin). Ethan refuses to believe Janie is his kid, but when her mom suddenly leaves for rehab, the child has no place to go but on tour with the band. With no feel for fatherhood, Ethan continues his hard-living ways, leaving Janie to fend for herself in the dive bars and sleazy motels along the way. As Ethan's self-destructive spiral threatens the group's future, his band members desert him one by one, until he and Janie are left alone. Desperate to finish the tour and revive his career, Ethan stays on the road as a solo act with Janie in tow, where her surprising musical talents help guide him down the rocky road to redemption.

The original songs in Janie Jones range from Ethan's raw club performances to the sweet and soulful ballads with which Janie consoles herself. Award-winning Irish singer/songwriter Gemma Hayes created Janie's evocative music. Eef Barzelay of Clem Snide brought a distinctive sound to the score of the film as well as all of Ethan's songs.

Janie Jones is in select theatres starting October 28, 2011, as well nationally on video on demand, iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly and Vudu.

INXS Find Their New Voice and It's Not Bono
(Gibson) INXS recently posted a clip of a new song with the band's new singer but neglected to say who he was – only that he was Irish, which led to speculation about Bono and Rea Garvey. The Australian band have now revealed that their new singer is Ciaran Gribbin, according to Rolling Stone.

Gribbin's resume includes writing the Madonna single "Celebration" and singing backing vocals on Snow Patrol's "Eyes Open." Ciaran has already recorded some demos with INXS and will front the band during a tour in November. He replaces J.D. Fortune (who sang with the band after winning the reality competition Rock Star: INXS). Original singer Michael Hutchence died in 1997.

"A baptism of fire is the best way to describe the live shows, I think," Gribbin told Billboard. "In a way I'm slightly nervous, and in another way I'm unbelievably excited. It's a wonderful, proud moment for me. It's a real feeling of achievement to have a band of INXS' stature believe in me as a performer and a singer. It's genuine dream-come-true, fairy-tale stuff for me. I'm still waking up in the morning here in Australia going, 'How did I get here?'" more on this story

Singled Out: 9 Left Dead's Put Your Guns Down
Today 9 Left Dead singer Travis Jones tells us about "Put Your Guns Down" from their brand new album "The Wrong Things," which is being released today. Here is the story:

The inspiration behind this single actually came from a night when Jared and I were on duty as prison guards. One day we had an inmate come in thinking he was a little more hardcore than he actually ended up being. I was having a bad night, and to add to it, this inmate kept running his mouth. One thing led to another and he ended up taking a swing at me. So I moved in on him, picked him up, and slammed him into the ground taking control of the situation.

Later on that night I was going back over what had just happened in my head and the line 'careful what you wish for' kept sticking in my head, because he wanted to fight, but I know he didn't see it playing out the way it actually did. And it made me think about those guys that think they are unstoppable until someone actually puts them in their place. That's where the idea for 'Put Your Guns Down' came from.

We look forward to the release of our album, 'The Wrong Things' this Tuesday, September 27. It is a very straight up rock and roll album with aggressive guitars riffs, hard hitting drums, and catchy lyrics and melodies that everyone can relate to and sing along with as well. Making this album with Cody Hanson of Hinder and Marshal Dutton was the experience of a life time for us and we hope our fans love it and that it helps us to build our fan base to an entire other level.
