Singled Out: Beta Wolf
Today Beta Wolf frontman Grant Arnow tells us about the song "Domino" from their "Just Before Morning EP" which was released this summer. Here is the story:

I wrote the song about a relationship I'd been in that, in spite of being long past it's due-date, just refused to die. A friend of mine calls it 'expiration-dating'; you break up, and even though you both agree that it's best to move on, you continue to hook-up endlessly. She and I had been together for a while, and it was clear that it was time for both of us to let go – I was on the road most of the time, and she wanted to settle into the traditional 'family and kids' mode. We went through the teary 'this just isn't working', 'here's your stuff back', 'take care of yourself' blah blah blah, and put the whole thing to sleep (or so we thought). Almost immediately after, though, we started a pattern that dragged on over a few years. A few nights a week, either I (or she) would be laying awake at 1:30AM, bored, and we'd shoot the other a text message… just to see what would happen. It would typically say something simple, like 'U AWAKE?' Either of us reasoned that, if the text went unanswered, the sender would be forced to confront the reality of a cold bed… but if the text WAS answered, then it was justifiable to get together (again). It was a kind of abstract addiction - an 'affection addiction' - and I think it ultimately came down to the fact that it was really comfortable and familiar to see one another, and that finding someone new would involve some degree of risk. Alcohol definitely added fuel to the fire; whenever either of us went out for a night, the other could definitely expect a late-night broadcast. So I wrote 'Domino' as if I was speaking directly to her: ... when you're drunk and alone and you need somewhere to fall, you go where you're comfortable… you come to me', and 'every time that I'm ready to let you go, you come and knock me down like a Domino'. It was my way of verbalising what we were doing.

Singled Out: Argonaut
Today Nathan from Argonaut tells us about the single, "More Life," their new self-titled album, which was released today. Here is the story:

I Want More Life is a phrase that I had been using for a while as a kind of Situationist slogan. It is originally a quote from Bladerunner but seemed to sum up everything I felt, especially about being in a band and using music to open doors and live my dreams. We later wrote a mighty track called 'I refuse to die' which I guess is an appropriate follow up.

When Argonaut began writing songs it was the perfect mission statement, two people feeling trapped in their relationships and day to day lives who wanted to step into a parallel universes. I was reading and re-reading the Philip Pullman His Dark Materials trilogy at the time, especially The Subtle Knife, and like the book, the lyrics felt very visual and cinematic. We have just completed the video and it is everything that I ever dreamed it could be, really complementing the concept and transporting the band so effectively. A dream of mine would be to commission movies of the other two books…

The music was a very natural rhythm and progression for me as a guitarist. The quiet/loud format is an obvious homage to the Pixies and later Nirvana – musically we saw 'Where is my mind' by Pixies as the greatest song ever written and wanted to use that as our modest staring point! The bass is very Kim Deal too. There is a lovely little piano ditty at the end – recorded on a tiny casio keyboard- that was inspired by the way the piano trails off of Epic by Faith No more.

Oh, and the vocals. Neither Lorna or I knew that she could sing when we formed the band. The time that she opened her mouth and screamed those words was an epiphany, the hairs still stand up on the back of my neck. Such soul and passion and genuine angst. I have heard people in the audience comment ' she wants more life', damn right! It's a great penultimate song in our live set, ending conversations and bringing all attention back to the band. One day we hope to resent it as a weight around our necks! For now we can't wait for everyone to hear it and sing along – and although we by no means condone such things, it would be great to see "I Want More Life" spray painted on the Saint-Germaine-des-pres…

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Corbin Reiff of Finding Zoso just published a new interview with Guitar World Editor in Chief, and author of the new book Conversations with Jimmy Page, Brad Tolinski, who says that fans can expect new music from Jimmy Page. Possibly next year. Here is that portion of the interview:
Finding Zoso: Jimmy has been promising to deliver new material for quite some time, and has stated that we might see something next year, what is your take on this, should fans be hopeful?

Brad Tolinski: Yes I do think that they should be hopeful. It's funny because I've seen the process a couple of different times and every time he's sort of really gets on a roll putting something together, some sort of Led Zeppelin business comes up and derails him. That's happened a couple of times, but I wouldn't be surprised if you see something come out next year. I know he's been working on some new things for a while and the ideas are really cool and I know he's gone quite a bit of way to realize them. I think we may see something next year and it will be really cool. It will surprise you.

Finding Zoso: Can we maybe expect to see him on the road touring? He has mentioned several times that he'd like to tour as well?

Brad Tolinski: I don't know, I would imagine that he would. I know that he loves to play live and that he loves to tour so I would think that he would. He's certainly playing very well, anyone who has seen Celebration Day can see that he's playing as well as he has in years and years and years.

I don't know if you can use this, but thought I would bring it to your attention. Check out the full interview here.

Necrowretch have completed the recording and mastering of their debut album, Putrid Death Sorcery, which will be released early next year.

The album was recorded in late August at Blackout Multimedia studios in Brussels by Phorgath of Enthroned

Necrowretch's guitarist / vocalist Vlad comments: "We are extremely pleased with the way the recordings took place in Brussels as Phorgath of Enthroned put all his energy in this album and did everything possible to make those days in the studio a stainless experience. A first album is always a turning point in the life of a band and we were willing to push everything one step further while remaining faithful to our influences such as Merciless and Grotesque. We also wanted this album to be more personal and more varied than everything we have done in the past. All in all I think the mission is accomplished! We are now looking forward to puke on the face of the earth what Necrowretch has to offer on a full length album through songs such as 'Ripping Souls Of Sinners,' 'Putrid Death Sorcery' or 'Spewed From Hell.' Our friend Milovan Novakovic from Montenegro is now working on the cover artwork and some shirts design that will symbolize our Putrid Death Metal!" more on this story

Singled Out: Spirit Animal
Today Spirit Animal frontman Steve Cooper tells us about the track "Lead!" from their brand new EP "This Is A Test". Here is the story:

"Lead!" is one of those 'FrankenTunes' that gives you great relief as a writer when it finally all fits together. The main riff was something that our guitarist, Cal Stamp, had introduced in several previous projects without it ever being totally right for those groups. Up to this point we'd mostly learned and played songs that the band had written when I lived in L.A. before Cal or Paul Michel (bass) joined. So this was really the first time one of the songs started this way, with all of us in a room looking at each other going, "got anything good?" He broke this riff out and it immediately made sense for our new sound: heavy as hell but also with a precision to it, something that would challenge the rest of the guys to make something special happen.

The lyrics, the opening ones at least, had a similarly long history to them. Before Spirit Animal gave me the chance to be in a real band I was doing solo stuff but I wanted badly to do a concept project called Hellvis Deathly where a four-piece would record minute-long speed metal songs and then slow them down like chopped and screwed sizzurp music so they'd wind up as two or three minute rock songs. The opening lyric in "Lead!" ("This is a test / this will always be a test / this is a test, at last, that you can't pass / at least this is a test") was initially the first line of the original Hellvis Deathly tune that never got recorded. It was the first thing out of my mouth when we were messing with "Lead!" so I just ran with it.

Conceptually, this song is about things becoming obsolete: keyboards because nobody plays them anyone, they just use computers; magazines because nobody reads them anymore (except Anti Music!!!), they just look online; and lead because nobody uses pencils anymore, they just type. It might seem sort of depressing but it's important to talk honestly about cultural phenomenons, to make light of them and to take responsibility for them. By doing this it's more inclusive and it can be a celebration of our flaws and the direction we're all headed. We're not saying, "you're all idiots, you should keep using keyboards, magazines and pencils." We're saying. "we're all idiots!" And I think that's just more awesome and positive.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Love De Vice Cover Deep Purple Classic
Love De Vice have posted their cover of Deep Purple's "When a Blind Man Cries" on YouTube.

The clip comes from the Polish progressive band's first live DVD, "Silesian Night 11.11.11," which features the band's outstanding performance at the Wyspiañski Theatre in Katowice.

Tomasz Kudelski (drums) comments the track: "'When a Blind Man Cries' is the only cover song we've been playing at our gigs, often changing the style of its arrangement. Deep Purple is actually my favourite band. Back when we founded Love De Vice, I envisioned it as a combination of the styles of Deep Purple and Pink Floyd. Even though the song doesn't seem to be such, it's actually very difficult to play because it's beautiful in its simplicity. And it's sung by Gillan, who was a god of vocals at that time. Most of the covers of 'When a Blind Man Cries' are failures because they are just imperfect copies of the original, with bad vocals. We decided to change this song a bit and play it as if it was one of our own. We reconstructed it, we added some motifs which weren't part of the original song and made it much longer. But at the same time we tried to retain the melancholy mood of the original, which goes pretty well with our own style. I'm far from saying we played it better than Deep Purple, but we certainly played it differently. I think our version holds up pretty well, both with reference to the vocal and instrumental performance."

The "Silesian Night 11.11.11" DVD also includes additional materials, such as interviews with the band members, photo gallery, band's history and the video clip "Foggy Future"

Jimi Hendrix A Big Influence on Lemmy As A Singer
(CBS Local) While many musicians were influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Motorhead frontman Lemmy knew the man:

He actually worked as a roadie for Jimi in the 1960s before joining Hawkwind (and ultimately forming Motorhead). He spent time with the man both in the studio and on the stage, and he told CBS Local that Hendrix was a big influence on him as a vocalist.

"He helped me to cement my resolve as a singer," he says. "He hated singing, he would board himself up in the corner of a room with a microphone and he's record like that. I still do that now, myself. He must have been insecure about his singing. I thought he was a great singer, he had a lot of soul." more on this story

Mick Jagger's Brown Sugar Love Letters Going Up For Auction
(CBS Local) Mick Jagger's love letters to Marsha Hunt, the woman who famously inspired the Rolling Stones' "Brown Sugar," are being sent to auction block next month in England, The Guardian reports.

Ten letters from Jagger, written in July and August 1969, will be sold December 12th at Sotheby's, where they are expected to fetch £70,000-£100,000 (roughly $111,000-$158,000).

The letters supposedly show an intellectual, sensitive Jagger who was exceedingly self-aware about his fame. Written while Jagger was filming the movie Ned Kelly in Australia, the letters find him referencing the death of Stones guitarist Brian Jones, as well as his feelings about Bob Dylan and John Lennon/Yoko Ono. He discusses the reading material sent to him by Hunt (Emily Dickinson poems, Vaslav Nijinsky's diaries), and includes bits of lyrics he's writing (like the track "Monkey Man"). more on this story

John Fogerty Signs Book Deal For Memoir
Little, Brown and Company have inked a deal with John Fogerty to publish his memoir in 2014. They sent over this background:

In his long-awaited memoir, John Fogerty—one of rock's most important artists and a national treasure who's sold over 100 million albums—will recount his remarkable life. Fogerty's private and professional journey is one of the great sagas in American music, and his book will interweave the facts of his life with the music that emerged from his personal joys and battles. This includes his time as the lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for one of the most beloved and successful rock bands of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Fogerty wrote hit after hit, including "Proud Mary," "Have You Ever Seen the Rain," "Bad Moon Rising," "Down on the Corner," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Fortunate Son," "Up Around the Bend," "Run Through the Jungle," "Long as I Can See the Light," "Born on the Bayou," and so on—distinctly American songs that coalesced the strong emotions running through a nation at war in Vietnam. His solo career includes the album Centerfield, as well as Grammy Award–winning records and award-winning tours. John Fogerty sits beside a handful of musical songwriting legends. He was a hit maker, and he is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time.

Fogerty will write about the pressures of sudden fame, his tumultuous relationships with his bandmates—including his brother, Tom—and his long and costly battle for creative freedom from his record label, a battle that was taken all the way to the Supreme Court. Crushed by how the record label victimized him, he was forced to walk away from it all while they were the number one band in the world. "I want to tell the story of how I fought—hard—to maintain my artistic integrity in the face of opposing forces." He will also discuss his inspirations, including meeting his wife, Julie, and eventually building a family with her, which brought him back to music. He will also look forward to where his journey will take him next, including his forthcoming album Wrote a Song for Everyone, due in 2013, and upcoming collaborations with the Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Kid Rock, and Dawes. more on this story

Dave Navarro Replaces Band's Stolen Guitar
(CBS Local) We were just reporting on the sad but common occurrences of bands having their instruments stolen on tour, as a Good Samaritan recently returned a banjo that was taken from British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons during a swing through Australia.

In another report of stolen gear with a happy ending, Canadian husband-wife duo the Marrieds had an acoustic guitar lifted at a recent gig.

After offering a reward for the guitar's safe return, the band was pleasantly surprised when none other than Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro took it upon himself to send the couple one of his signature model "Jane" Epiphone acoustic guitars to replace the one (a Navarro edition Yamaha axe) that had been taken.

The band was obviously thrilled with Navarro's gesture. more on this story

There is no hard feelings between Engel and Magnus and we parted ways as friends, carrying with us a lot of good times and awesome memories. Come out to the shows and support Engel and Lenne by banging your head on the Frontline!"

Klavborn had this to say: "So this is it, my time in Engel is over. I'm not going to rant about the who's and why's, just say goodbye. I have had a lot of good times and I am sad to leave it behind, but that's how it goes sometimes. It's not a farewell forever, I'm not going to quit music. I'm going to miss the boys on stage, the people in the crowd and all the good friends I have met on the road. To the boys on stage: Good luck with all future adventures. Arsis Replace Christopher Amott
Arsis have recruited Brandon Ellis to replace guitarist Christopher Amott who left the group to join Arch Enemy.

"I am super happy to say that Brandon Ellis has recently become the new lead guitarist for Arsis," commented vocalist/guitarist Jim Malone. "Not only is he one of the best musicians that I have been able to work with, but he shares my passion for all things that are 80's metal, including ridiculously tacky paint jobs on guitars. I am beyond excited about writing new material with Brandon. Until then, listen for his shredilicious leads on the upcoming Arsis full length. Come check him out live with Arsis this December!"

"Initially when Nick joined Arch Enemy, we all thought we could make it work with him having the time for both bands," continued bassist Noah Martin. "Things unfortunately overlapped and we weren't able to work on the new album with him. We appreciate everything he's done for Arsis. We'll miss our friend greatly and do wish him all the best. Both Nick and Ryan Knight (The Black Dahlia Murder), contributed ridiculous leads for the album.

"Brandon's solos on this full-length are both crushing and particularly creative. His presence, along with Shawn's (Priest – drums), were integral to the tone of this album. We're in the post-production stage, now that the masters were just finished. In the meantime, come have beers with us on the Sonata Arctica run!" View of Youtube clip of Ellis playing here.

Singled Out: Tusmorke
Today Benedikt Momrak from Tusmørke tells us about "Høstjevndøgn" from their brand new album "Underjordisk Tusmørke". Here is the story:

The idea for Høstjevndøgn (Autumn Equinox) came about one autumn evening as I was looking out the window at the decaying flowers of the lilac, pondering how everything goes into the earth and is resurrected like Re Horakhty. I fell into reveries about the simultaneously circular and teleological nature of time. The seasons change, we give them names, they reoccur, but at the same time there is a forward movement. The movement is circular and has direction at the same time, both in a line and in a circle. What is the meaning of creation and corruption, flowers blooming just to fade? There is no apparent answer in words alone, and the song expresses a longing for understanding more than any attempt at statement of fact. The circle leads us to we don't know where. We dwell for a spell in the thickening twilight between two nights. Before and beyond there is darkness.

The song was originally recorded on an acoustic guitar in the kitchen of my girlfriend's apartment in Iladalen. The chorus was made while out walking and recorded on my mobile phone. Actually, a well-known cultural personality in Norway has urged people to respect those who walk around singing into their phones, because they might be creating important works of art.

As a basically neo-neo-romantic project, Tusmørke incorporates a great longing for the splendor of the past. In this piece we merge this with trepidation for the future and a listless questioning of the point of it all. The equinoxes and solstices play an important part in the thought world of Tusmørke, and the title was chosen since the autumn equinox occurred during the writing of the lyrics, which main message basically is that there is a lot to be learnt from contemplating rotting fruit.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Singled Out: Ill Nino
() Today Christian Machado of Ill Nino tells us about their new song "The Depression" from their brand new album "Epidemia". Here is the story:

"The Depression" is just one of the 10 faces that define the character within "Epidemia". Epidemia is the Spanish word for Epidemic. It is simply a nickname that I gave this state of mind which brings us closer to the question of life and death.

"The Depression" is not a political statement nor is it a social statement. It's a very personal song that demands from the more obscure side of our feelings. To simplify, it can also be seen as a song about how a lone psychotic gunman could walk into a theater and remove many living souls from this ride we call life. It simply is about a state of mind and the tragedy which occurs when all faith is lost.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and check out the lyric video right here!
