Mike Portnoy Reportedly Has Onstage Meltdown
Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy reportedly had a meltdown onstage during Portnoy / Sheehan / Macalpine / Sherinian show in Manila, Philippines on November 6th.

BW&BK posted a video with what they call Portnoy's onstage rant/rap and also offered Portnoy's side of the story:

"Not to excuse my actions, but at least to explain the situation: This PSMS tour has been VERY difficult on all of us in terms of gear and production. The only way we have been able to make it to such far away places such as Manila, Russia, Israel, Indonesia, etc (where it is normally VERY expensive to tour unless you are a 'name' band that has been around for many years) is we've have had to make concessions by using supplied gear and local techs at each show.

"Granted, WE agreed to these terms and are willing to make it work - however, on at least a half dozen occasions on this tour we have been incredibly frustrated to arrive at the venue only to find the band's gear requirements were simply blatantly ignored (wrong keyboards, wrong amps, Zildjian cymbals, etc) AND were not setup and ready for us as was supposed to be the case and what the promoters had promised. " - Read the rest of his statement and see video of the incident here.

Aerosmith Producer Discusses New Album
(hennemusic) Aerosmith fans looking to find out how the band's just-released, decade-in-the-making studio LP, "Music From Another Dimension!", was created can listen to exclusive excerpts from producer Jack Douglas discussing the real-time-recording of the album ahead of the release of a forthcoming record producers anthology, "Behind The Boards: The Making Of Rock & Roll's Greatest Records Revealed", due in December from Hal Leonard Books.

Among other commentary, Douglas declared excitedly at the top of his conversation on the making of the band's new LP that "I was looking to get back to the truth in both sound and the band themselves, breaking it down to the raw sound that we used to get, which is two guitars, bass and drums, vocals, an occasional keyboard, an occasional lead over the two rhythms going. And then truth in sound. I mean, we recorded to tape; the processing is all old analog 2 bear, so we're really looking to get back to where we were in the '70s in feel. So that's what we're doing, trying to make a true album. Some of the albums during the 1990s, some were very successful and some were made that feel like they were trying to sell to a young audience."

"On this record, we want to do two things: we want to go to the fanbase, and really the hardcore fans who let us know all over the world what kind of record they want to hear, so that's what we're doing," added Douglas. "And then, Steven [Tyler] has created so many new fans with 'Idol', and so many people have gone back to listen to the early stuff that even the kids want to hear that kind of thing again. So we're just having a blast, and when you make a record that's about the truth, and true, it's always more fun, because you don't have the pressure of trying to be something you're not on the record." - A lot more including audio clips here.

REO Speedwagon Going Nashville
(Gibson) Are the guys of REO Speedwagon going country? Strange as it may sound, it appears REO are trading in their classic rock sounds for something with a tad more twang. According to The Tennessean, the band recently took a trip to Nashville to record the first song for the group's upcoming studio album. REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin even co-wrote the track, called "Nothing We Can't Rise Above," with country-music producer Chris Lindsey and Journey keyboard player Jonathan Cain.

"I got turned on by this title, and Jon Cain had written something in a political way, and when I heard it, I went to a different place with it," Cronin said about the song. "I tend to like to write about relationships [and what makes them] work or fall apart, so that's the direction the song took."

Cronin says he felt totally comfortable in the Nashville scene. After all, he recorded his first album with REO in Nashville in 1972. "Kids with loud music coming to Nashville didn't make a lot of sense back then," he said, "but I've always loved Nashville. As a songwriter, this is my home away from home." - more on this story

"I had just finished a 19-hour studio day working with Rush (for the first time) on a Tsunami Relief Charity which was broadcast on CBC in Canada, also late 2004. When I first met with Alex [Lifeson] in early 2005 about the possibility of doing more work together on R30, our first conversation veered off to a coffee laden all out bond-fest about how exciting 2112 would be remixed in 5.1. Our second subject was the mixing of R30 – go figure."

JACK DOUGLAS TALKS AEROSMITH:

Aerosmith fans looking to check out how the band's just-released, decade-in-the-making studio LP Music From Another Dimension, can listen to exclusive excerpts from producer Jack Douglas discussing the real-time-recording of the album ahead of the release of a forthcoming record producers anthology that, 'Behind the Boards: The Making of Rock & Roll's Greatest Records Revealed,' due in stores nationwide from Hal Leonard Books in December, 2012. Live audio excerpts can be found at: www.reverbnation.com/behindtheboards.
Among other commentary, Douglas declared excitedly at the top of his conversation on the making of the band's new LP that: "I was looking to get back to the truth in both sound and the themselves, breaking it down to the raw sound that we used to get, which is: two guitars, bass and drums, vocals, an occasional keyboard, an occasional lead over the two rhythms going. And then truth in sound, I mean we recorded to tape; the processing is all old analog 2 bear, so we're really looking to get back to where we were in the '70s in feel. So that's what we're doing, trying to make a true album. Some of the albums during the 1990s, some were very successful and some were made that feel like they were trying to sell to a young audience."
"On this record, we want to do two things: we want to go to the fanbase, and really the hard core fans who let us know all over the world what kind of record they want to hear- so that's what we're doing. And then, Steven has created so many new fans with Idol, and so many people have gone back to listen to the early stuff that even the kids want to hear that kind of thing again. So we're just having a blast, and when you make a record that's about the truth, and true, its always more fun because you don't have the pressure of trying to be something you're not on the record."

Douglas also took fans inside the heart of the band's writing process throughout the making of the album, sharing that: "the way it works is: we come up with a lick, and then we develop the lick into a feel, and a feel is something that Steven can hold in his hands and bite into. And as soon as he's got that, and feels he can bite into it, we sit in the rehearsal room and we work it up so it's something that he can start singing over—even if it's not lyrics, he starts to get a feel for what the lyrics might be, and he starts singing syllables. Then we go right in to record it while the idea's fresh. Then we listen back to it a few times, make some changes, and go on to another tune."
Once the band had reached a creative consensus on keeper tracks that have thus far included singles like Legendary Child and What Could Have Been Love, the producer added: "We might come back to that tune later with some fresh ideas that may just be changing a couple of chords in a chorus, but slowly these things develop until we end up at the point where we have 15 songs that feel like they're almost complete. But now maybe a couple of chords change here or there, maybe the corner notes on the bass turn to eighth notes, things like that. All the while Steven is singing along, and he's in the control room right next to me. Sometimes I'll give him a 57, and I can be doing an overdub, and Steven is singing right into everybody's headphones, and it starts to take shape."
The book is available for pre-order at: www.halleonard.com.

Singled Out: Derelict
Today Derelict vocalist Eric Burnet and guitarist Max Lussier tell us about the song "Yours To Surpass" from their new album "Perpetuation". Here is the story:

Max:Yours to Surpass will always hold a special place for me because it's the first song I ever wrote for Derelict. Musically I tried to write the song as singular stream of consciousness, with very little repetition and a non-traditional structure. I actually had to write out the music and then learn it, as there were some parts I could not originally play like the very technical middle section. Although it's the shortest song on the record, I find it's quite action-packed and fairly complex.

Eric: When Max brought the YTS music to the table, I knew the lyrics would have to be bold and strong to match the energetic statement he had put together. I ended up writing about my belief that notions of fate and destiny are traps that keep people stuck in bad situations. The lyrics really encourage people to take command of their own lives, to make drastic changes in order to pursue happiness, and to always avoid slavery, be it to a person, institution, philosophy or pre-conceived notion. "Your fate is yours to surpass!"

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the album right here!

The title of the split is War of The Gargantuas and it is fitting on many levels because of our combined love for the 60's Japanese film of the same name, the power of our combined musical output(s) and our humorous affection that plays out within each of our "Gargantuan" personalities," states Philip Anselmo. "Both Warbeast and myself have full length LP's that will be released shortly after this is released, but this split is unique musically. It is a time capsule; a loud pause 'til we both release our full length products. Enjoy the destruction of music!" more on this story

Axl Rose Addresses Rock Hall Induction and The State of Music Industry
Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose sat down with USA Today late last month for a rare interview that covered a lot of topics including the state of the music industry, his skipping the Rock Hall induction and the odds of a truce with his former Guns N' Roses bandmates. Below are excerpts from that conversation.

The music industry now: "It's horrible. It has nothing to do with music. I'm not trying to be bitter or cynical, but it's an ugly business. People want you to care about them or their lives, their kids, but in the end, you're just a commodity. I don't feel that way about this Guns lineup. I'm not trying to use them. I have to treat it like a business, but I don't want to make decisions that are detrimental to anyone's welfare."

Skipping the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction: "It wasn't painful to not be there. It was a beating to deal with all the pressure of feeling I was supposed to be there and deciding what to do. I try to be respectful about getting an honor or recognition, but I don't really know what the Rock Hall actually is. In my experience with the people who run it, I don't see it having to do with anything other than them making money."

The odds of a Guns truce: "I feel that ball's not in my court. I'm surviving this war, not the one who created this war." Read the full interview here.

Classic Doors Concert Tops The DVD Charts
(hennemusic) "The Doors: Live At The Bowl '68" - featuring the legendary band in concert at The Hollywood Bowl on July 5, 1968 – has debuted at #1 in both the US and Canada.

For the first time, the film from the historic performance has been painstakingly restored using the original camera negatives and the audio has been remixed and mastered from original multi-tracks by the group's engineer Bruce Botnick. This new restoration offers a stunning visual upgrade from earlier versions and will give fans the closest experience to being there live along side Jim Morrison, John Densmore, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek.

"The Doors: Live At The Bowl '68" includes three previously unreleased tracks from the performance. Technical issues with the recording of "Hello, I Love You," "The WASP (Texas Radio And The Big Beat)," and "Spanish Caravan" prevented them from being released in the past. Now, through meticulous restoration of the audio, all three are included, marking the first time the concert has been available in its entirety. more on this story

Singled Out: Cherri Bomb's Too Many Faces
Today rising rockers Cherri Bomb tell us about their new single "Too Many Faces" from their debut album "This Is The End of Control". Here is the story:

We wrote "Too Many Faces" when we started realizing what our friends really thought about us. It was around the same time when we decided to take the band to the next level, focusing our lives around playing music together.

So many people, who never looked our way before, started coming up to us to try to spark a friendship. People we'd been friends with for years decided that we were out of our minds to dedicate so much time to writing and playing that they just stopped talking to us cold. Some people started rumors. Some people lied about being our best friends.

It was a confusing time because all we had done was decide to follow what our hearts were telling us to do, and everyone's faces started changing before our eyes. You don't really know who your friends are until you're faced with walking through fire together – it was an incredible lesson.

So, one day we're in the studio, we just started playing and "Too Many Faces" came out. We think a lot of people can relate to the emotion of thinking you know someone inside and out and then the kick in the gut when you realize you really didn't know that person at all.

We felt it could be an anthemic song. A lot of people can relate to a friend turning on you for reasons you didn't expect.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album (the official video is expected to be released today and should be posted here.

"I wrote 'Something' a long time ago, back when there was a whole other batch of people around us: lawyers, managers that I was really pissed off at," Perry tells Rolling Stone. "It's a short bit of angst and pissed-off-ness about these people that ripped us off forever. The funny thing is that 20 years later, there's a whole new batch of people I'm pissed off at. The lyrics still work."

Exhumed Cancel Canadian Tour Dates After Border Patrol Problems
Exhumed have been forced to cancel a number of tour dates with Napalm Death and Municipal Waste after running into issues with the Canadian border patrol.

Exhumed vocalist/guitarist Matt Harvey explains: "If you have a DUI, like four out of six people in our tour party do, the Canadian border patrol will charge you $200 per person to obtain a 'temporary resident permit' to be in the country, or, if they feel like being d**ks, they can arbitrarily decide to just not let you in. We've never had an issue getting in, but this time they decided to be d**ks.

"The woman we spoke to at customs informed us that we had received too many TRPs in too short of a time and would not be able to apply for any further TRPs until we had all completed their extremely convoluted rehabilitation process. We had to sign documents that legally bound us to leave the country immediately, and stated that if we were found in Canada after being denied entry, we would be arrested. W.A.S.P.'s Blackie Lawless Tributes His Late Brother
On Saturday W.A.S.P. frontman Blackie Lawless wrote a blog tribute to his brother, Clifford L. Duren, who passed away on Friday. Here is what he had to say on his Facebook page:

For just a moment I'd like to go back to the "Crimson Idol". We were playing in Tillburg last night and I got a phone call from my sister Brenda about 6 PM informing me that our brother had passed away. When we look at death we measure it in one or more stages of life. The death of a parent is the death of our past. The death of a spouse or mate is the death of the present. The death of a child is the death of the future, in that their future will now never happen. The death of my brother represents both the past and the present for me. Part of my childhood is now gone as well as the present.

He was a mentor to me in my early years. Much of the advice he gave me I still use to this day. As a kid, I admired him more than he would ever know. Doing that show last night was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. When we were at the end of the Crimson Idol part of the show, I looked up at one of the screens just as Jonathan was being laid on the bed. I could not control my emotions anymore and walked to the side of the stage and cried.

My brother in some ways was in the story of the "Idol" in the same ways I guess that all siblings compete for their parents attention. As a writer we draw from all the things around us so it's understandable that my relationship with him would be in the story to some degree. Me being the younger brother it's natural to see the older brother as your hero. As a writer I've tried to share myself with you all, even the intimate details of my life to give you a better understanding of who I am so you can better see the man behind the lyrics.

The "Idol" was ultimately a story about love. I write this to say, if there is someone in your life you need to tell that you love them….don't wait.

Dirge Within Recruit Divine Heresy Frontman As Their New Singer
Dirge Within have recruited Divine Heresy's Travis Neal to replace Jeremy "Jerms" Genske as their vocalist.

Back in August the band announced via their Facebook page that they were having issues with Genske with the following: "As a few of you have been inquiring, we feel the need to be honest with our fans. We did have a fill in singer last night at the House of Blues Chicago with Static-X. There have been many events leading up to our singer's departure from the band, although he has not contacted any of us yet and officially quit. Jerms has been absent from many practices while the rest of the band has been hard at work rehearsing and preparing for shows. He refused to be in certain scenes in our latest video unless his girlfriend could also be in the video, which the rest of the band did not agree with. He has made it very difficult for us to work with him and has not shown interest in being a part of this band. We were told by Jerms that he could not play this show due to personal reasons.

"As a band, we decided that we wanted to be there for our fans and continue on to play the show last minute using fill in singer "Adam Gilley" from Product Of Hate. We were asked personally by Wayne Static to play this show and no one in the band wanted to miss out on playing such a killer show with good friends. We have had to decline three shows prior due to Jerm's personal schedule and the band did not feel like he has been honest with us. Robert Plant Wrote Album Worth of Material With Band Of Joy's Miller
(hennemusic) Band Of Joy guitarist and producer Buddy Miller tells Rolling Stone that Robert Plant visited his home studio in Nashville last year for a casual joint songwriting session that proved fertile, yielding an inspired batch of songs that the pair quickly recorded with BOJ drummer Marco Giovino.

"We didn't mean to, but we sort of wrote a record's worth [of material] and I said, 'While we're doing this, why don't I put up some mics and document it,' because that's better than just trying to remember it or record it on your phone," explains Miller. "And it sounded so good I think we, you know, accidentally made a record."

It's not finished yet, and there's no indication whether Plant will actually release it when it is, so Miller chooses his words carefully. "I don't know how much [Robert] would want me talkin' about it," he says, though he does allow that the songs they recorded would make for a raw counterpart to Plant's 2010 "Band Of Joy" album. "If the last record might be pastoral, parts of it, [this one's] much more tribal; it's much more urgent and tribal and, dare I say, rockin'!" more on this story

Jason Bonham Can't Say What's Preventing Led Zeppelin Reunion
(hennemusic) Jason Bonham knew he had some very large shoes to fill when he stepped behind the drum kit for Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion show at London's 02 Arena.

As for playing with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones again, Jason says "I'd be a fool if I said, no. At the New York press conference there were three questions in a row, asking 'Are you gonna do something again?' Robert didn't get the hump exactly, but he gets the hard end of the stick. So he said, 'Haven't you got another question about the film itself?' But I can see why they're asking. Because when you watch the film, we all look like we are having such a great time, it's no wonder people want to know if we're going to do it again"

Asked what's preventing a more prolonged Zeppelin reunion from happening, "I can't say. I don't know," explains the drummer. "Let's say, it's in the lap of the gods. Everybody is actually getting along great at the moment. I've learned in the last few years that the Internet is not your best mate, and there are a few doubters out there. So the film was a great thing to watch. I know I live in the shadow of the greatest drummer in the world, so it's nice to have a bit of sunshine now and again." more on this story

Levon Helm Documentary Coming
(CBS Local) In The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's 1978 film about The Band's infamous final concert, the focus is all on guitarist Robbie Robertson.

Now Band drummer/singer Levon Helm, who passed away earlier this year (and for the record, wasn't amused by Scorcese's little film), is getting his due credit with a documentary of his own, set to screen in theaters nationwide next year.

Titled Ain't in It for My Health: A Film About Levon Helm, the film chronicles Helm's late-2000s comeback of sorts, marked by his 2007 album Dirt Farmer, 2009 Grammy-winning album Electric Dirt and his Midnight Ramble concert series. Director Jacob Hatley shot the film over a period of more than two years, spending much time on location at Helm's Woodstock, N.Y. home. more on this story

Hurricane Sandy Damaged Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Building
(Gibson) Hurricane Sandy devastated much of the East Coast, but the storm's effects also extended into the Midwest, and Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was impacted by the hurricane.

According to ABC NewsChannel5 in Cleveland, the storm's strong winds ripped some siding off the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame building, and heavy flood waters from Lake Erie almost topped one of the building's main walls.

None of the Rock Hall's memorabilia was damaged. A spokeswoman told ABC News there was zero flooding inside the building, adding that harm to the building was "superficial, not structural." more on this story

Singled Out: Message To Venus
Today Message To Venus vocalist Jandre Nadal tells us about their new single "Change" from their latest album "The Envelope". Here is the story:

I remember sitting on the beach one day, relaxing my mind from some uneasy situations I was going through. We can all sometimes get comfortable with a certain lifestyle. Confused or manipulated, our minds become contaminated by their surroundings.

I was thinking about how others have managed to change for the good or the bad, to be reborn, to start over again, to cleanse their thoughts, to be given a hand or to be left out. We are all looking for a change, and sometimes we have to accept a loss in order to gain.

I was still living at my parents' house at the time, lost my job, music was far from going where I wanted it to. My relationship was a mess, I was a mess. I was distracted from the path I was meant to take by decisions I was doubting. I remember hearing an Arabic-style melody going through my head over and over and over again. Similar to the music of the gypsies and Ravi Shankar. 'Change' was born. At first I wrote the lyrics with a "looking back" point of view. But I didn't want to be someone who dwells too much in the past, carrying unnecessary weight on my shoulders. I wanted to look forward. The song lost its direction around that time, so I rewrote a new addition, something else to motivate myself and others to do the better, to change. Now I pretty much feel like I'm back on my feet mentally, physically and socially.

At the time when 'Change' was coming out as another single, we had the opportunity to perform with MGMT in front of thousands of people. We decided to do a live video for it. Getting footage of us having a good time backstage, at rehearsal, just goofing around because it's part of the progress and the relationship you have as musicians but most important, as people. We yet didn't have the budget for a storyline but it was still fun and and we kept it as real as possible.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video right here!

Aerosmith Explain New Song We All Fall Down
(hennemusic) Aerosmith have premiered "We All Fall Down," another new track from the band's forthcoming album, "Music From Another Dimension."

The tune is the only song on the project not written by a member of the group. The ballad was put together by Diane Warren, who wrote Aerosmith's 1998 smash, "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing," which was the band's first Number One pop hit.

"The chorus goes 'We . . . all . . . fall . . . down.' That's monumental in any song. When you do a song and all of a sudden just the drums are there?" Steven Tyler tells Rolling Stone. "That's magic in songs. So when I heard that, I knew it was just weird enough for us to pull off." more on this story

NEW VAN HALEN ALREADY IN THE CAN FOR 2013?:

It's been a quiet patch for Van Halen fans (we're used to that!), but that doesn't mean I haven't been keeping my ear to the ground for any news or rumors. What I have today comes under the "rumor" category, so don't shoot the messenger folks, just passing it along as it came from a good source.
What I heard today was that the band, when recording the A Different Kind Of Truth album, in fact recorded enough material for a second release and that could find its way into our hands in the first quarter of 2013 before the next leg of the band's tour commences. So....interesting and hopefully true, as I'm still spinning the latest album and loving it. Stay tuned...

Axl Rose Says Ex-Guns N' Roses Bandmates Damaged His Songwriting
Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose gave a revealing interview with USA Today to promote the band's residency in Las Vegas.

During the chat he explained why Chinese Democracy was delayed and how original band members effected his writing ability. Here are the excerpts:

Songwriting slump: Supermodel girlfriend Stephanie Seymour and original Guns guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan "did more damage to my ability as a writer. To those three, it was all crap. It beat me down so much. At the time of the (Use Your Illusion) tours, Slash and Duff said, 'You're an idiot, you're a loser.' I didn't write for years. I felt I was hindered for a very long time. I was also trying to figure out what I wanted to say, when it's right to be venting and when you're digging a bigger hole. Lyrics on Chinese took a long time."

The long wait for Chinese Democracy: "I had to deal with so many other things that don't have to do with music but have to do with the industry. There's such a loss of time. It was more about survival. There wasn't anyone to work with or trust. Someone would come in to help produce and the reality was they just wanted to mix it and get it out the door. They had a different agenda. (The next album) will come out sooner."

The tour will be spread over March and April with 28 shows supported by three of the best local bands in every market.

Nile will play two massive sets with music spanning their twenty year career. "In order to commemorate our 20th year as a band," states guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders, "we want to bring Nile and all metal fans an evening of Nile music that spans our entire career and play two full sets with only a brief intermission. After years of many package tours, the necessary set time restrictions have often meant that Nile's had to streamline our set. Fans didn't always get to hear the songs they came to hear. Thankfully, some of those classic Nile songs we have been itching to play for years will now get a chance to be heard live. We are extremely fired up." more on this story

Who Killed (or Saved) The Music Industry?
Adam Russell (Story of the Year, D.R.U.G.S.) and Ryan Phillips (Story of the Year, Greek Fire) have started a kickstarter campaign to fund their new documentary, "Who Killed (or Saved!) The Music Industry."

"We really wanted to take a look at how the changes of the past decade or so have affected people in the industry - the artists, producers, engineers, label employees, managers, etc.," explains Phillips. "This is not about corporations or the faceless entities that the public often perceives the music business to be. This is about the creative, passionate people, both on stage and behind the scenes, that make their living in this industry."

Already in the works, Russell and Phillips have spoken to members from All Time Low, Deftones, The Used, Yellowcard, P.O.D., Myles Kennedy (Altar Bridge, Slash), Breathe Carolina, We The Kings, Four Year Strong, Anti-Flag and Dead Sara to name a few and are expected to interview many more in the coming months. more on this story

Hollywood Undead Release New Song From Dostoyevsky Inspired Album
Hollywood Undead have released the new single "We Are" from their forthcoming album Notes From The Underground and sent over these details about the track.

The song is being serviced to Modern and Active Rock Radio. "We Are" reunites the band with producer Danny Lohner [Nine Inch Nails, Puscifer], Johnny 3 Tears explains, "The song is about collective resistance. It's the silent majority, but we're using Los Angeles as the backdrop. Every time we work with Danny, he takes our music to the next level. He's willing to go as far outside the box as we are. As a whole, it's a good introduction to Notes From The Underground because it encompasses the band idealistically. Think of it as an ode to our misled youth."

The album title is an homage to the Fyodor Dostoyevsky novel—a Johnny 3 Tears personal favorite—the moniker alludes to what's really under the mask. "We've maintained an underground identity," Johnny 3 Tears remarked. "When we write songs, we're coming from a place people don't like to look at or talk about openly. As people get older, they get used to lying. We have a bond with so many kids because they have a trace of that honesty. They don't know how bad some things get yet. We tell them the truth." Watch the lyric video for the song here.

Singled Out: Hey Now, Morris Fader
Today Brooks Milgate from Hey Now, Morris Fader tells us about the song "The Blues and Alcohol" from their new album "Good Times Ne'er Forgot," which features guest appearances from members of Morphine, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kingsley Flood, Reverse and more. Here is the story:

So, I had been trying to write material for the new record and was coming up with songs, but it all sounded the same to me. Like I just kept rewriting the same songs over and over, and the songs weren't all that great to begin with. I mentioned something to my wife about it and she came up with this idea – step away from the piano (which is typically where I write most of my music) and try to write something on the guitar. That was all it took. I started with the chorus progression and then the verses came, and the lyrics pretty much wrote themselves. I remember it was a Sunday and I was really bummed that I had to go back to work the next day – as most people are on Sunday evenings! So the lyrics took on a sarcastic look at having to spend so much time doing something you really couldn't care less about. The song title is implied in the second verse by suggesting that the blues and alcohol are how we cope with this reality – like I said, very sarcastic!

The song took shape over the next couple of rehearsals. I did a demo that I sent to the rest of the band of me playing it on guitar – power chords and distortion. It wasn't until we started rehearsing it with me on the piano where I started getting the idea for the horns. The horn lines basically wrote themselves. We did another demo of it as the trio and I took that and sequenced the horn parts (it sounded ridiculous!) and wrote some charts which I sent to our horn section to study for the recording. We knew we wanted guitar on the tune as well. My friend Troy Gonyea is probably the best guitarist you could ever meet, and we were honored to get him to play on our record. I sent him all the demos that I had – the one with distortion and power chords and the one without guitar. We never rehearsed the song with him, he just showed up at the studio to lay down his parts. I was expecting something similar to the versions I had sent him, but he pulls out his slide and says that he wants to try something. So we start rolling and he lays down this slide track like he's been playing the song for 10 years. Upon hearing his slide and the horn parts, it suddenly sounded drastically different, but way better. We were thrilled. There's so much going on in the song that the piano part ended up being extremely simple. My goal was to stay out of everything's way!

And one last funny story I remember about this specific tune was that there's two separate lyric parts going on in the chorus. I remember driving to the studio with Pez discussing what we should do in the chorus – up to that point, we only had the background part established and we felt that the chorus should be a bit more distinct. So then we just started coming up with different rhymes that we could involve with lyrics about booze, and ultimately the line "So fill my glass up, I'm pretty hard up". The line in the final chorus – "High balls are back and better than ever" – is an inside joke with Pez and some friends of ours. We were pumped that it fit into one of the choruses!

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!

Delta Rae Release Day Of The Dead Inspired Music Video
Delta Rae celebrated Halloween with the release of their Day Of The Dead inspired music video for their new single, "Dance In The Graveyards."

It's a song that celebrates death, which has deep meaning to the band, "These past few years have been the first of my life when I've lost people who were really close to me" explains Ian Holljes. "The death of one of my closest friends as well as a mentor with whom I lived with left a really strong impression with me and inspired this song. These people were wonderful parts of my life. For me, they're not resting in peace. They remain vivid, important influences in my life. They still move me, and in so many ways I'm still dancing with their spirits and the memories they left behind. The song reflects both my personal attitude towards dying, but also how I want to remember the people I love who have passed on."

"When it came time to shoot a video for the song, we wanted to pay homage to Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday whose rituals treat death with a similar celebratory feeling as the song -- remembering the dead as vibrant and real -- and create a story where the dead and the living are reunited to dance together once more."
