Today's Day In Rock News!
Classic Santana Lineup Releasing New Album(Radio.com)
For the first time in over 45 years, Carlos Santana has recorded a studio album with the lineup he used in the early 1970s. His new album Santana IV marks the first time the legendary guitarist recorded with the same band featured on his 1971 effort Santana III.
According to a press release the 16-track album will be released on April 15 and features Santana's classic line-up of keyboardist and vocalist Gregg Rolie, Journey guitarist Neal Schon, percussionist Michael Carabello and drummer Michael Shrieve.
"It was magical," Santana says of the sessions. "We didn't have to try to force the vibe - it was immense. From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana."
The iconic guitarist adds, "When you can go back and break new ground with joy and determination - and some whoop-ass energy - it gets you going. I think we achieved something very rare. This music was screaming to come out of us. It wasn't about nostalgia. It was about passion." Read more here.
Black Sabbath's Farewell Tour Will Run Into 2017(Classic Rock)
Black Sabbath's The End tour will extend into 2017, Rival Sons drummer Michael Miley has revealed. Rival Sons are opening for Sabbath on their farewell world tour and Miley says it'll go way beyond the dates already confirmed. As it stands, the last date confirmed is in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 21.
Miley tells One On One With Mitch Lafon: "The dates go into 2017, but none of those are released. We don't even know what they are yet. I think this tour is going to keep going for a while.
"We have dates up until September. It's pretty unbelievable. It's an honour to be invited by Ozzy and Sharon to be the opening band direct support on their farewell tour."
The End tour got underway last night (January 20) in Omaha, Nebraska, and will head to Australia in April after the first of two North American legs wraps up in New York on February 25. Read more and listen to the interview here.
Iggy Pop and Josh Homme Stream Song From Secret Album(Classic Rock)
Iggy Pop has released a stream of a track he secretly wrote and recorded with Josh Homme for an upcoming album. Gardenia is lifted from Pop's upcoming album Post Pop Depression, released on March 18 via Loma Vista.
Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Homme and Pop wrote and recorded the album in secret, roping in Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and QOTSA man Dean Fertita for sessions at Homme's Joshua Tree and Pink Duck studios. The touring group will be completed by QOTSA's Troy Van Leeuwen and Chavez bassist Matt Sweeney.
The partnership started with a text from Pop to Homme which read, "Hey, it would be great if we got together and maybe write something sometime - Iggy."
Homme tells the New York Times: "He is the last one of the one-of-a-kinds. This is a much deserved victory lap for a man who's not sure if he won. But he did. He may have tunneled underground for lots of that, but he still got to the destination."
The pair shared ideas via post before agreeing to hit the studio to record Pop's first release since 2013's Ready To Die by The Stooges. Homme adds that working on the record helped him deal with the Paris terror attacks that saw 89 people killed at the Bataclan venue where Eagles Of Death Metal were performing on November 13 last year.
He says: "I wasn't there by a stroke of fate. I guess it was my fate to be home and to bring them home. Bad things are like a sunset, they dissipate over time. But this is a long sunset. My dearest friends - how will they un-see that?
"The fact that I had this to work on, it saved me." Stream the song here.

Megadeth Release Video For 'Dystopia' Title Track(hennemusic)
Megadeth released a video for the title track to their forthcoming album "Dystopia" on the eve of its January 22 release. The animated clip follows the storyline established in the video for the track "The Threat Is Real."
"We had met with a guy in England, and I basically talked to him about this dystopian city that I had kind of visualized," frontman Dave Mustaine tells Mashable. "You see all these movies like Armageddon, Independence Day, 12 Monkeys, Planet of The Apes and stuff, and there's always a moral at the end of the story: If you stand up for what's right, you won't have to give in to a dystopian world.
"It's just one of those things we grew up in. Explaining that concept to the artist - I thought he got what I was saying pretty clearly." Megadeth will launch a North American tour with guests Suicidal Tendencies, Children Of Bodom and Havok on February 20 in Dallas, TX. Watch the video here.
Don Felder Tributes Former Eagles Bandmate Glenn Frey(Gibson)
Glenn Frey and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder famously had their differences, but in a prepared statement, Felder has put aside their long-standing frictions.
"Glenn was the one who invited me to join the Eagles in 1974 and it turned out to be a gift of a lifetime to have spent so many years working side by side with him," writes Felder. "He was funny, strong, and generous. At times it felt like we were brothers and at other times, like brothers, we disagreed.
"Despite our struggles and difficult moments together we managed to create some magical songs, recordings and live show. His charisma on stage was felt and loved by millions of people all over the world."
Felder, who was dismissed from the band in 2001, says he now regrets that the chance to patch things up has passed. "I have many wonderful memories of those years and the many miles I travelled with Glenn, filled with laughter, song, parties, hugs and brotherly bonds. Glenn was the James Dean of the band." Children Of Bodom say: "The band is happy to announce the addition of Daniel Freyberg to Children Of Bodom on guitars. Look for him on all upcoming tours."
Freyberg adds: "Happy to announce that soon I will hit the road with legendary Children Of Bodom." There's no word if he'll join the Finnish outfit full-time.

Snider will put the finishing touches to the recording of Now next month. He tells One On One With Mitch Lafon: "They came to me. These are people who write for Kanye, they write for Katy Perry, they write for Pink, they write for Taylor Swift. They're top pop songwriters.
"Damon Ranger says, 'You're iconic. You're the voice of rebellion. And I think with the right songs, you could reach a whole new audience - a mainstream rock audience.'
"So we demoed one song called We Are The Ones, which is a real active rock. It's hard, but it's not metal. And it came out great. So we went into the studio and recorded four more songs. And I just signed two record deals, and we're going back into the studio to finish the album at the end of February. And I'm not sure when we're gonna release it." Read more here.

"You're not only going to be able to see what we're doing - you're going to feel like you're right in the room with us." Watch the video preview here.
Slash Shares Joe Perry Les Paul Guitar Story In New Film(Gibson)
Lots of guitar aficionados know the story of how Slash surprised Aerosmith's Joe Perry by returning Perry's long-lost Les Paul to him as a birthday gift.
In the forthcoming film, Turn It Up!, Slash offers new details, explaining that when he first saw the instrument pictured on the interior of Aerosmith's 1978 album, Live! Bootleg, he thought it was the coolest guitar he had ever seen.
"This was during my 'discovering Les Pauls' period," he says. Perry sold the guitar, but years later, when the opportunity arose, Slash bought the legendary instrument-for $8,000-and eventually he returned it to Perry. Read more here.
Dream Theater Stream New Song 'Moment Of Betrayal'(Prog)
Dream Theater have released a stream of their track Moment Of Betrayal. It's the latest song lifted from their upcoming 13th album The Astonishing, out on January 29 via Roadrunner Records.
Guitarist John Petrucci previously said the 34-track record, which is split into two acts and set roughly 300 years in the future, was inspired by today's fast-moving technology.
He said: "There's already self-driving cars that they're experimenting with. Pretty soon, we'll be looking back, like, 'Oh, remember when you used to have to drive yourself?'
"Being a musician, and since music is such an important part of my life and people that surround me, I knew that music had to be a central theme. That with all the advances in technology, how music becomes less and less important and just really easy to stream and quickly listen to a song and make something up on your phone.
"As the importance kind of went away, I thought it would be really crazy and a travesty if people didn't make music or didn't participate in the arts anymore and it was all artificial - it was all done by machines." Stream the song here.

It recognizes recipients for "a lifetime of contributing to the legacy of the guitar and having a singular importance to the development and historical appreciation of the instrument."
Iommi says: "I'm very honoured by this award from the National Guitar Museum. The guitar has been an important part of my life for most of my life, and I'm happy to have contributed to its legacy. Not only that, but I have just the place for this award in my new studio." Read more here.

A Hendrix exhibition and exploration display will also be available and the flat is connected to 25 Brook Street, where composer George Frederick Handel lived 240 years earlier. That flat has also been refurbished and will open on the same day.

Goldy tells Revolver: "The song Livin' Out Loud is one that I am particularly proud of, because it really is a strong song musically, melodically and lyrically."I like the mixture of tough, sexy and dark rolled into one song. Plus, it's one of my favourite riffs that I've written."

Monster Truck Stream New Song 'Things Get Better'(Classic Rock)
Monster Truck have unveiled Things Get Better, a track from their forthcoming Sittin' Heavy album, the follow-up to 2013's Furiosity. "The song is about the current state of the world," says singer Jon Harvey. "In all ways. There will be no future without radical change. But I'm just a guy in a band. Maybe Bono can help..."
"We were attempting to add a new twist on our normal rock sound with the addition of the piano," says guitarist Jeremy Widerman. "We then decided to juxtapose that with a fuzz guitar, much in the same way this song contrasts a bleak future with optimism to overcome. It's a message of hope in the face of real adversity that seems to be around every corner these days. Not just a reminder to take nothing for granted but also to be aware that through struggle and perseverance comes triumph."
The band recently released a promo video for Don't Tell Me How To Live, and have a short European tour lined up for March and April. Sittin' Heavy is released on February 19. Stream the new song here.
Ozzy In The Studio For Black Sabbath's Paranoid Anniversary(ITS)
The latest episode of syndicated radio show In The Studio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands celebrates the 45th anniversary of Black Sabbath's Paranoid with an interview with co-founder, singer/lyricist Ozzy Osbourne. The show sent over the following details:
The world into which the Birmingham England band Black Sabbath quickly rose to popularity in late 1970 felt increasingly like a dangerous place. Political assassinations, bombings, race riots, the Kent State College campus slaughter, and the decade-long Viet Nam war all brought Sabbath's dark haunting world vision and bludgeoning hard rock into focus.
But the beginning of Sabbath was something quite different. Ozzy Osbourne shares with InTheStudio host Redbeard the fond memories of those days when he and his mates from the working-class neighborhood of Aston decided to ditch their trendy blues music, cut the band down from a 6-piece to a four, and started doing what Ozzy characterizes as "spooky music".
Ozzy said, "I took the album home. My mum and pops have got one of these great big radiograms... I put the record on, and my father turned around to me and said, 'Son, I'm going to ask you a question and you've got to be honest to me.' I said yeah. 'Are you sure you're just drinking alcohol?' I said yeah, why, what's the matter? He said, ' This is very odd music. This is not music. This is weird.' " Stream the episode here.
Guns N' Roses-Themed Slot Machine Released(hennemusic)
A Guns N' Roses-themed slot machine has officially been released by Swedish casino games developer NetEnt as the band gears up for a reunion this spring.
According to Onlinecasinoreports.com, NetEnt has developed a visual design that is faithful to the image of the band that burst onto the scene with 1987's "Appetite For Destruction", the biggest-selling debut album of all time with more than 18 million sold in the States and more than 30 million worldwide.
The gaming interface is positioned in front of a festival stage with bright blue sky and puffs of white clouds. Band members have then been used for the various symbols, which are complemented by official logos.
Fans will be able to play the music slot on their favorite mobile devices now as the game has been released simultaneously on desktop and mobile devices. Android, iPhone, and iPad are three of the most popular HTML5 platforms that will run the slot.
The GNR slot is now widely available across many different NetEnt casinos including LeoVegas Casino, Insta Casino, Cherry Casino, Tivoli Casino and Real Deal Bet Casino. Read more and see a video about the game here.
Leprous Guitarist Looks Back At Band's Evolution(Prog)
Leprous guitarist Tor Oddmund Suhrke says the band's reluctance to throw away material cultivated their progressive sound. The Norwegian outfit are the latest artist to appear on FreqsTV's Into The Machine series, with Suhrke and drummer Baard Kolstad in the spotlight on the latest episode.
Suhrke says: "We learned to play music at the same time as we were evolving as a band and it took many years before it was something you would listen to.
"On the latest two or three albums we've become a lot more aware of trying to find the best way to compose music. When you start out, you're making guitar riffs and you'll never throw them away. To begin with, when you made something, you had to keep it and try to make something out of it." Read more here.
Oceans Of Slumber Release 'Suffer The Last Bridge' Video(Prog)
Oceans Of Slumber have released a video for their track Suffer The Last Bridge. The song features on Winter - the US outfit's second full-length album which is out on March 4 via Century Media.
Drummer Dobber Beverly says of the track: "Living is an imperfect consequence of being born. We are fallible creatures and we must adapt and learn to overcome our fear of living.
"Suffer The Last Bridge is the call to embrace your imperfections and walk away from the things you can't change. The video follows vocalist Cammie Gilbert on a contemplative journey through the beautiful Texas landscapes we call home.
"It's her journey to a place of realization and the acceptance of change and loss. And eventually finds her walking away from the unavoidable consequence of being alive." Watch the video here.
