8/4/2011 9:28 AM ET

(RTTNews) - Alec Baldwin has signed on to host the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" on September 24. The premiere will give Baldwin the most host appearances in the show's history, with sixteen. He is currently tied at fifteen with former "SNL" cast member Steve Martin.
The "30 Rock" star was never an official cast member on the show but appeared so regularly in its 37 season that he has his very own "best of" DVD. Notable performances by Baldwin in the past have included his role as Schweddy Balls, an impression of Charles Nelson Reilly and a role in the Adam Sandler "Canteen Boy" sketch series.
Baldwin, in fact, first connected with his "30 Rock" co-stars Tina Fey and Tracy Morgan during his various guest hosting appearances on the show. The second edition of the new season will feature "Bridesmaids" star Melissa McCarthy, who takes to "SNL" for the first time.
